This thread is making me sick, a castration service would be a better option than driving some of these "cars"
Are you serious?
You know, because the MPS in targa's are 100% factory. No rollcage, engine, suspension, braking or traction management upgrades there at all. ROLF. Get your hand off it son, before you go blind.
Out of the box:
GTR 0-100kmph is 4.7sec
Mazda MPS is 6.5sec
That... is... eternity when talking "performance" cars. You're right, they are not doing "bogan burnouts" because they are not capable... Oh, and they are FWD. And how do you know that a MPS hasn't had it's arse flogged? People, like yourself, will consider a MPS a performance car and then when they get it will have to drive it's tits off to get any "performance".
Sorry, I answered the thread title of a performance car under 20k. I didn't think limp wristed Mazdas and VW "hot hatches" fall into this category.
Not in my books anyway.
Having said all that, I do have to retract my suggestions since the OP stated post 2005.
Gotta agree with you there jesterarts.
Argueing with people like you is pointless. Yes there are many performance 4 cylinders out in the market, yet you looking through rose coloured glasses considers 0-100 the most important factor of all. I don't deny the BNR32 GTR is an animal, but look at it's age and the condition of most of them, you'd be better off on a R34GTT.
The OP has asked a pretty simple question and your oversight was seen too late to stop you looking like an idiot.
BTW, here is the Targa regulations for you to brush up on, maybe you shouldn't bother because you know it all already...

Hmmm... someone is getting overly worked up about what has been posted on the interweb.

If it were my money and I was chasing a light "performance: car I would look at a S15 or a R34 GTS-T. Any GTR you can pick up for $20k is probably going to need a lot of money spent on it to get it up to scratch. I was looking at all of these before buying the Clubby, went with the HSV as I have a thing for land barges.
Hope his mate takes his time with a decision!
4 cylinder :limpy:
Spot on!!
Most of the cars listed are not "performance" cars by any stretch of the imagination. There is a difference between a performance car and a quick small car which is what seems to be most of the opinions soo far.
Personally I would get something like an R34 GT-T or GTS-T, or an EVO VII. The Evo would handle mint and you only need to throw a few grand at them and they certainly get going.
Define performance car.
I personally think something like the Mps is a performance car, however a sports car it is not.
I agree, it is considered a 'hot hatch' and you may as well tip in the Renault Magane and Clio Sport if they are available for that price.
IMHO, it's no different to someone asking for a sports car and people recommending a HSV or FPV, they are both performance saloon cars, certainly not by any stretch of the imagination are they sports cars.
If money was no object in this arguement but had to be compact, I'd be all over a 135i like a rash!
But bang for buck and newness, both the XR5 and MPS fit the bill.
Since when is a MPS 3 "limp wristed" ??? Rolling acceleration from 80-120, they are quicker than a 911 and M5, and thats in stock form (as reported my Wheels Magazine). Add a turbo-back exhaust and intake, and these things MOVE. I used to own one, scared many a v8.. One major downfall though: Front wheel drive! Absolute bitch to get off the line cleanly and no traction until 3rd gear. Good car though, still miss mine.. Can't throw my VZ into a corner like i could with the MPS!
I have to agree with all your points really, none of you are wrong. The MPS might not be a "performance car" because it is not focused on being full on performance related like the Skylines, etc but as said previously, in more than one post, a hot hatch is required, thus an overall good package is desired.
The MPS is not slow at all and is not like other cars where you are trying to squeeze every dollar per horsepower out of a car, like an S13/14/15, GTR, Evo where you intake, tune/computer, injectors, etc and you got 220rwkw S14/S15) and 240awkw on Evos with only a couple of grand on them. My mate does not understand any of this, maybe "2nd Hand Performance Car For $20k" isn't accurate but rather "Light Performance Hot Hatch".
He is in the process now of selling his current car.
