Its actually starting to grow on me a little......some more mods 154rwkw, E85, coilovers (to properly sort the wayward handling), exhaust, wheels etc. Not too bad!

I actually drive this one a bit versus leaving it parked. Thats says something (not much) but it does deliver a bit of buzz
All that I've read talks about "fun" handling, rather than fastest lap generating "stunning" handling.
"Fun" is of course quite a variable, depending on the person you ask...;)
The other thing often read is that Toyota designed it from the outset to be played with heavily by tuners, rather than attempting to release the ultimate product for the retail consumer.
I suppose it depends on ones definition of fun.
For journos driving around at low speed its fun to get the back a little loose and have the thing slide - thats for sure.
For someone actually trying to use it on the track the nature of the car to have the back overtake the front in one sudden switch at 130km/h plus when the things loaded up can be a little on the spooky side. It can be dialled out, but its certainly a trap for the unwary...and there have been a few binned due to that trait
Thats not just my opinion, some of the better Tarmac drivers in Australia, the likes of Glenney, Crocker etc. all seem to share the same opinion
Or maybe.....Im just getting old :)
Merry Xmas Davo!
I went for a test drive in an auto GT two weeks ago (it was the only one the dealership had) and i didn't mind it.
I didn't give it a thrashing as it was on public roads and i am just an average driver even though the salesman was suggesting i push it a little harder.
The two observations are that it didn't seem to accelerate any faster or handle substantially better than the focus i have , but the auto transmission didn't annoy me like the in the Focus does (it's shuddering again occasional)
Depends if there are any corners....then much quicker than a Falc :)
(But what isnt?)
Please don't.
Every time is see one of these I think "Finally all the hairdressers can buy a new car!" Their Celicas must be getting pretty long in the tooth by now.
Just as high powered cars in the hands of low quality drivers have been a trap for the unwary for decades hey...
Yes, your definition of "fun" is perhaps rather different to most other peoples, but at the end of the day, Toyota and Subaru have produced a very affordable rear wheel drive coupe in an era that is almost devoid of affordable rear wheel drive coupes. Since most buyers will be doing low speed stuff like these journo's, maybe that's why people say the makers nailed it! The track stuff is when tuners are meant to get involved. :yup:
Half glass full time Martin...:)
I've found it depends on the nerd, I know one with a completely stock accord euro and on the other end one with a ssv wagon cammed and a turbo satria gti track/motorkhana car
My hairdresser had an xr6t and traded it on a maloo, go figure
I had the option of buying an 86 instead of my CV8 monaro... Chose the Monaro due to the obvious reasons, aswell as in a few years time the 86 will just be another import on the roads mostly driven by P platers/ douchey guys/ hairdressers. IMO there arn't many skylines/silvias/wrx's on the roads that make me think "wow, that guy is cool!" or "That's a cool car"

Certainly not a Hairdresser’s car in the vain of old Celica towards end of it’s life also known as “all show and no go”.
It’s designed from scratch as a drivers car at a great price. It’s the most highly acclaimed this year.
Comparing V8 Holdens with 86 is not comparing apples with apples.
Haha. I'm a bit of a computer nerd. But also a tradie with a modded hilux and modded ve senator. Don't tar me with the same brush.
Not everyone is into cars ... I have a client that earns 7 figures a year, he just bought a demo CX5 for < $40K. Another client that has a private airstrip on his property outside of Noosa, a hanger with 5 planes in it and he drives an 11 year old POS Hi-Lux.
Can't always judge income / wealth by the car someone drives.
Back to the car ... I've read a few comments bagging the factory tyres, what's your opinion of them Martin? Crap or not as bad as the journos are making them out to be?
My nephew recently purchased an 86 and the tyres are pretty ordinary. Sits nice and flat around a tight turn, with the grip on the edge at moderate speed. That being said the chassis balance makes it very controllable and fun to drive, so sliding the rear tyres is not a major problem. Straight line power (lack of) off the mark does not warrant sticky hoops either. Tyres/rims are pretty well Camry spec I reckon.
That doesn't put me off that much , i can always hop on my Hyabussa if i feel the need for speed.
It isn't the most practical car in the world , you won't fit a set of golf clubs in the boot and if you wanted to carry passengers in the back seat you would need to cut their legs off first.
But i ain't into golf and the only passenger i carry who would need to be in the back seat is my four legend friend (she's just a little too big to travel comfortably on the front seat)
I don't give a rat's that some see it as a hair dressers car.
I do see it as a car that would make the 1/2 hour to 45 minute commute to and from work something to look forward to (as my LC GTR Torana did)rather than something that was to be endured.
The two reasons i didn't put my name down for one is that i like to think about major purchases and there is (from what the salesman told me) up to an 18 month waiting list..
Gee, wish all my fishing expeditions were this successful.
I'm a big fan Skinny man!
Very well priced, rear drive fun. It's great to see so many buying them as well. And many of the ones I have seen are modified in some way (usually rims and tyres).
I think it illustrates very well just many enthusiasts there are outside the Neanderthal rear drive v8 scene.
i've put my name down for one, just have to wait for the mother in law to be finished with hers and i'll take it off her hands - might be a few years wait though for her to find something else she likes to replace it with :)
