Awesome. Shows how the LSA powered car monsters a callaway ls1. Of course the V8 supercar is a completely different type of animal :)

Coming out of that last bend shows the race car didnt have that much more acceleration then the Gen F GTS

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
The gts would have more torque wouldn't it, so it's not engine that made it slower in comparison out of that last corner more corner speed I think from the supercars tyres and chassis.

Nah I doubt it but as far as a road car being close to a supercar. There are still massive differences. But performance has never been closer in the modern supercar era

Its a whole combination of things. Sequential gearbox flat changes, higher horsepower and corner speed and lower weight and centre of gravity.

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
I couldn't imagine a 5.0L atmo engine in any state of tune putting out 740Nm, that's a biiiigggg ask. More power? Yes, but torque? It would be fascinating to see what a Super car bodykit on the VF would do, you could see the difference in speeds entering Caltex Chase, the race car had the downforce to go much faster through the bend.
Cheers, Matthew

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
and there you go,
just looking at the road cars (VX gts and the VF), a 1/2 sec approx of difference in 400m times equates to tens of seconds per lap..
the vf is not just a quarter mile queen, but a formidable track car.
There's a similar video with a V8SC, brocks A9X and a VZ SS..

Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
You do realise power is just torque and revs right
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Erebus were quoted saying their engine was putting out 485kW (650 BHP) at 7,500 rpm and 616Nm. Don't forget either that both the VX and GenF are carrying a lot more weight, maybe 600kg in the case of the GenF GTS. I am really impressed.
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Comparing the Supercar vs GTS is chalk and cheese for a million reasons, some already mentioned and some not, at the end of the day its just for marketing and it looks fantastic on TV... For a big fat family car and thats not being negative, the GTS did a fantastic job, looked good and sounded good, but with Garth driving I would expect nothing less
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
The other big difference is the man behind the wheel garrentee not many of us every day drivers could push it to that limit

Yes, Power = Torque x Revs. Race engines tend to have their torque peak at much higher revs, hence the high power.
Power (hp) = torque (lbf) x revs / 5250
LSA puts out 430Kw (580hp) at 6150 rpm, which means at 6150 rpm it is producing 580 x 5250 / 6150 = 495lbft = 670Nm, so the torque curve is falling away a little bit past peak torque at 3850 rpm torque peak of 740Nm.
V8 supercar, redline 7500 rpm and max power (assumed) 650hp,
if max power occurs at say 7000 rpm, then torque at 7,000 rpm is 487.5Lbft = 660Nm
if max power occurs at say 7500 rpm, then torque at 7,500 rpm is 455.0lbft = 616Nm
I'd love to see official figures but I can't see how an atmo 10.1 comp ratio race engine would not have peak power very close to the redline and the nature of an engine that would produce peak power at such revs, I can't imagine it having much more torque anywhere else in the rev range. hence my guess is that if a V8 Supercar engine is pushing out 650hp then peak torque is somewhere around 650Nm +/- a bit.
Sorry Macca, I'm not having a go at you or your knowledge about engine building but I struggle to think that an atmo 5.0L even in race tune could produce 740Nm.
Cheers, Matthew

Re: Supercharged HSV?
An LSA would put of considerable more torque if it wasn't strangled by a factory tune. You can get 650+ out of an ls1 N/A with well under 300rwkw

with a supercharger bolted on, they should compare the VX GTS with either the VE GTS or a VF Clubsport,
then power to weight ratio would be closer.or strap on a blower to the VX GTS ;)
thou I must sat the VF GTS sat well on the track.

Not sure I understand your reasoning. Why would they compare the old GTS with a new Clubsport? They are comparing the top cars from HSV from both eras.

Because it's not supercharged,
and if it was an era thing then they should have thrown in the NA VE GTS for a comparison, but that would have shown the VE GTS shortcomings .
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
They picked the VX because it was a nice gap of 10 years AND it was the most powerful locally built car at the time. Nice comparison.
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
i would think the VX GTS would have similar performance on track as a VE GTS, so that is definetely a big big step up in performance. ie/ the 1/4 times only tell half the story.
well done hsv. i want one lol..

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
I heard that Actives Gen F GTS ran at the Plex and pulled 11.04@124mph.....tune, upgraded pulley and pacemaker headers on factory rubba

Tune, pacies and pulley, what would the total cost of that be?
Pretty impressive time.
-
Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Wouldn't think it would be a huge outlay for that sort of performance :goodjob:

Any idea when this happened as i spoke to eddie late friday arvo and he said that it made 570rwhp but had not been to the track yet.

Wow, about 425rwkw? That's amazing with simple bolt-ons.

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Not sure whether it's relevant to this thread, but I'd suggest that the HRT car would have at least 680HP.
Cheers, Pickles.

Active Automotives GTS is pulling 570rwhp so is that around 700hp at the engine ??
Any idea what a supercar would do the 1/4 mile in ?

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
10.2-10.5 last time I seen them at the drag strip.
No idea on the COTF, those times where pre COTF.

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Not quite that high, 620-640hp pulls them up.

Gotta disagree with that. I know some of the "slower" teams are 640+, I think you'll find that 670 is what some Teams are achieving, some may even have a little more.
Cheers, Pickles.

Re: Supercharged HSV? - Part 4
Yeah I dunno Pickles, I know a guy (Not personally, my uncle moves drag cars/engines around for them and he builds my kart engines) who builds engines for a few teams and whilst he wouldn't give exact figures away he specifically said it was closer to 600 than 700. He also telling me about tolerances for the engines as far as HP and torque curves etc and what they have to be. He was telling my how much he has to defend the performance of the engines when a particular car may be down 5kp/h down Conrod and that pointing the finger at the driver for not getting a clean run out of Forrest Elbow was hurting him more than the engines performance...

Thats bloody quick I would have though more like 11.2 to 11.5
