My sister is with 3. Half the time she roams in the Melbourne inner suburbs. Pathetic. Telstra for the win. Optus is rubbish with 3G as is vodafone.

im with vodafone :( but hey they where the only ones who would give me a plan 2 years ago and they gave me a free phone today :)
so in say that I've got my SGSII today and wanna ROOT it and install a custom ROM which one do you guys recommend and a link to a good and easy to use guide to ROOTing and what not :)
Same here, not too fussed tho, 2 yrs is nothing really and telstra wanted $59 + 15 or 20 extra for the handset - for 2 yrs.....!
Honestly, whilst this is a great car forum with phone users from all camps, Whirlpool is a far better and more appropriate resource.... For newbies and super users alike. Not having a go at all though mate :)

Start off with Lite'ning ROM 6.1.
The developer however has gone missing for a while and it seems that the future of the ROM is somewhat a dead end.
It is however a VERY GOOD starting point for people who want to learn about rooting and tweaking things up with different Kernals, modems, mods, etc.
The battery life on it is still pretty good, it's fast, snappy and simple.
I would then highly suggest moving to Revolution ROM.
The Kitchen app for it is a god send.
I've tried all the popular ROMS and imo it's hands down the best.
The Whirlpool and XDA community is all you really need.
cheers
and i love this phone its awesome best phone ive had and the net on it is faster thru my wireless router then my PC lol and the camera !! absolutely destroys my N97's 5mp camera (using flash always left a light in the photo in high or low light scenes)
Edit: was on youtube (App provided on phone from box) and found most videos either don't work in Aus or for mobile is the away around this and pretty annoying considering google owns youtube :( and ones that do is there away to enlarge it to full screen?
No offence, but I can assure you they don't. I had a phone with 3 and couldn't get reception at home, and I recently read some where stating that they no longer roam on Telstra, they go to Vodafone then Optus. Just switched from Vodafone to Telstra.
Cracked the shits after I could get perfect reception in a little rural village in Fiji, but cant get reception at home. Phone was always trying to get 3G, then dropping back. Vodafone are shite.
Got the S2 with Telstra and am very happy with it ATM.
hi guys
well ive rooted the phone and pretty sure Ive put revolution 2.7.1 (in kitchen app clicked download rom when finished clicked the install the phone rebooted show a screen saying successful and rebooted) but it doesn't seem any different and not sure but when I look in the about phone still says what it did before 2.3.3 also downloaded a theme and few other things thru kitchen app done install reboot and what not and it hasn't changed
can anyone tell me how to use this or if there is another 3rd party app needed to impermanent these changes
thanks
So I got an sg2 this morning, rooted it and installed the revolution rom this afternoon ... I have installed all the google apps, skype, touchdown for exchange and some general apps for music, etc
I am a noob with android, so what are some app suggestions to get me started
Also, I can pair the device with the car, make calls through it, but it won't read my sms or emails like my windows omnia 7 ... What setting should I be looking for?

Never tried it myself so here's a result from a Google Search

Apps I've found useful;
RealCalc - Scientific calculator + unit converter
SoundHound - Tells you the details of the song you're listening to
Fuel Watch - Perth based but there are others for the East Coast
Torque - Bluetooth OBDII reader/logger
Astro - File management
PhoneMyPC - Control of computer via phone
eBay - Obvious
Quadrant - Benchmarking program. Useless other than the interesting factor
Google Sky Map - Awesome but not exactly useful unless you're an astronomer
Adobe Flash + Reader - Obvious
Dropbox - Cloud
Facebook for Android - Obvious
Power Control Plus (Widget) - Widget control of most functions
SwiftKey X Keyboard - Awesome keyboard, excellent predictive programming. I find it quicker and easier than Swype
thanks mate, I will hunt some of those down tomorrow.
I think I have found the setting for "read sms and email" - just need to get back in the car and get a message in the morning.
