Bad Dealer Experience - Cranbourne

I bought a new car form Cranbourne Holden other day for work purposes. I test drove some of the second hand cars in the yard and then opted for a brand new one because the price was not that much different. To close the deal i said to Damien i want the roof rack off one of the vans in the yard and want it fitted to my new one. Done deal. You would think.

Was supposed to pick the new van up today and when i asked whats happening with the roof rack. "He says we cannot take it off the van in the yard so if you want a roof rack you will have to pay for it". I told him that we had a deal. come to think of it when i asked him to write it in the contract he says "Dont worry about it mate well look after it"

I then told him what he could do with his van and told him i am not going ahead with the purchase.


He tells me you cannot back out of the deal because the car has been registered. I then decided to make a few calls and found out that even if the car has been registered you have 48hrs to cancel it without affecting it still being a new unregistered vehicle.

I asked for my deposit back of which they where very reluctant to give back until i made a scene in there showroom with potential customers present.

Then went to Berwick Holden and found the experience so much different. They have been very professional and after explaining to them what had occured previous they offered me a new roof rack at half price. Done deal.

I will never refer anyone or purchase any car from Cranbourne Holden.

Do you think you should get rid of all of the names in your post? Sometimes we say things in the heat of the moment, then regret them later. Just a thought.

you asked for bits off another car to be put onto yours? thats a bit shonky if you ask me. The other van is probably advertised to be sold with roof racks as well as other options. It would have been easier if you had just asked for roof racks and made a deal on some new ones. Dealers don't usually rip bits off other cars to be sold on others.

Speaking from experience of course.

i think the fact that the car salesman said it wont be a problem is the issue here

The roof rack on the van in the yard was as good as new and the car wasnt ready for sale. Nothing shonky about that. If they had no intention of giving it to me why did they do the deal to begin with. Now thats shonky. I Didnt expect the dealer to give me a brand new one.

Wow, a car dealer tried to skew a deal to suit themself. Who woulda thought?

Its not as unusual as you think, my old boy has done it with his cars putting it in conditions of sale (wheels, accesories). he also doesn't deal face to face with salesman until he is happy with what he is buying and goes to sign paperwork.

I support the removal of names, understandably you and the salesman had a 'gentlemans' agreement on the roof racks, if its not in writing it doesn't mean much.

You'd be surprised how often this happens with new cars, people may want a black car but with blue leather interior so they swap the interior from a blue car with blue leather so it becomes a blue car with black leather etc etc, happens all the time.

So after all that you ended up paying for the roof racks anyway?

You might want to read the whole thread mate. He went to another dealer that treated him the way he should be treated. Its not about him having to pay. He had a deal with the salesman and it was not followed through with. So, another dealer got the business.

Although I can see how this would get you angry, it might be an idea to take the salesmans name out of the post as it was not in the contract (the salesman made sure of that!!)

The best service I have had is at Lansvale Holden. I only go to them now. And I live on the Central Coast (2 hrs away).

Don from new car sales is a champ. Never pushy and always down the line.

I would of taken the issue up with the sales manager or owner. I can see your annoyance with the scenario, and how often have we heard stories about salesman trying fast ones on.

I cant say I've had an overly enjoyable experience ever when dealing with these guys. Its never as simple as the window price seems.

Like EVERYTHING in life, some places are better than others, but it's almost always a particular salesperson, not the whole business. To tarnish the whole dealership is possibly a bit harsh.
I don't think anyone would be surprised you were offered what appears to be "professional" treatment at another dealership, especially after telling them about your other experience. It's an open invitation to lay on some extra charm! If you go to another dealership selling the same brand, it's pretty obvious to them that you quite probably want that brand of vehicle. They will always come out looking golden against a competitor that you are majorly p!ssed off with....

Davo is correct - I've met some of the biggest wank stains selling cars in good dealerships that unfairly tarnish the name of the dealer.

When that sort of rot goes up into management, THEN you have a bad dealer

the land rover dealer i worked for was always putting bullbars, roofracks, towbars of other cars on the lot to one they had sold, whatever made the customer happy, tho im sure they always factored the value of such parts and labour to swap into the final selling price, but if the customer wanted the "blue one" with the "black" ones roof rack they got it, went for wheels as well, how often have you seen a car and thought "if only it had that ones wheels id buy it"
never rely on a salesmans word, always get whatever conditions in writing no matter how trivial you think it ts, save arguements later
