1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
This is my current project car. I had a VX Clubby a while back and loved the easy power the LS1 made. Then I found a project that combined my love for the old Zed shape and the LS1. I picked the car up with the mod plates already completed but the engine was harldy running and clutch had never been bleed properly so the Zed had never moved under LS1 power. I fixed up amost of the probs, installed Autometer gauges in the dash with the help of this forum so I knew what the engine (and 6 speed) were doing. The car has the following mods:
LS1 with mafless tune and stand alone PCM
6 speed box
R200 diff with LSD center
Custom tail shaft
Z32 front and rear calipers and discs
Coil over suspension
After repainting it myself I registered it about three weeks ago. I weighed it at work on day and it was 1150kg's without me in it. On a seperate occasion with my work gear in it and a full tank it was 1200kgs and when I backed the rear wheels off it was 600kg, exactly 50:50 weight distribution. Let me tell you this car is quick in a straight line too. The acceleration of such a light chassis is unreal. I'm not sure where to estimate my current rwkw at as the engine still has the LS1 manifold and injectors and valve springs. So it doesn't pull much after 5 grand. I have all the pieces I need to bring it up to LS6 status which it what the tuned PCM is set for so it can only get better after these items are installed. As well as some PAC 1218 valve springs. I cannot imagine what it will be like with a cam and some heads.:headbang:

Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
Wish I tried to keep or get my 280zx LS1 engineered, but I only really wanted a track bi-atch. Nice job, change the cam and springs and then you will love it. I'm actually going to redo my exhaust and put a single plane mainfold on mine.

What would I have to spend on a 370Z to make it this quick?? They are on my list for a mid life crisis car though. A black one.
Thanks for the comments guys.
And do I want to sell it...............NO.

I just wish we could rego cool projects like this in Vic but unfortunately ... "VicRoads says no".
Oh yeah, specs on the little (big) brother please, I'm guessing it's not quite stock? ;)

Well apparently you can, just need to find a passionate engineer, not some service centre bloke with the right qualifications.
You're right about the little big brother. 400rwkw, head work, cams, biggest low mount twins etc etc.

Aww, nice!!
Ok so 400 rwkw divided by 1.55 tonne = ~260 rwkw per tonne versus say 180 rwkw guesstimate divided by 1.05 tonne for the Z = ~170 rwkw per tonne. So the GT-R still has a fair bit of lead, not to mention to 4WD advantage.
How's the difference in the seat-of-the-pants feel? Is it as much as the figures would suggest?

My kw/T will be bit higher soon with the manifold/throttle/injector mods but as is......let's just say we've already had a roll-on in second, in the one lane with him starting behind me and I was well in front when we hit 150-160ish. He would have been realing me in though. I don't bother taking it past 5k at the moment as it runs out of puff. Starting from a dead stop would be completely different of course.
Seat of the pants?..........imagine removing 600kgs from your car and making it smaller so there is less wind resistance. Thats what it feels like.

Love it mate, great Job.
Love the 33 all so, my mate has a Midnight Purple R33 GTR V-spec and man it launches hard, it is something else aye. That is only with Power Fc, cams, exhaust and few other bolt on bits. I am trying to imagine a launch in that one

Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
Here is a link to an interesting thread about the LS6 conversion and using the LS1 coolant lines.
Some people are converting the newer cars back to the LS1 coolant lines in the USA because they reckon it worked better than the LS6 system.
I recently did one and used a hammer and sharp wide blade screwdriver as suggested on here.
Worked a treat, no problems. :goodjob:

Some confusion, the GTR's not mine, its a mates from work.
When referring to its bigger brother I meant within the Nissan family etc.

Now that's a neat job, 570z, Great name! :)

Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
Well the LS6 manifold has been installed but after also installing the LS6 injectors, I was advised to wait until it gets a tune otherwise they'd run too rich, so the LS1 injectors went back in.
I think the seat-of-the-pants-o-meter has picked up some improvement in the top end just by changing the manifold.
I ported the entry to manifold as well as spare throttle body which required me to make up a new 78mm throttle blade as the factory size is 75mm. I haven't installed this bigger throttle body yet.

Well I havent done too much to this since the last update. I raced it at a local go kart track and split the steering rack bushes, but had lots of fun.
Here is a quick vid I took on a 0-200kph run, remember my speedo is in mph.

My Zed got to be in a car show as part of the Townsville 400. It was an awesome weekend. We got to do a lap as part of the drivers parade. Would you believe I only got one photo of it on the track.

Im moving from Townsville down to Gladstone to start a new job. I've been at my current one for eleven and a half years so it's a big move but one that I hope will pay off. I've been driving the zed to work as a daily for a while as I know it will get a lot less attention for a while after the move. That's not to say I haven’t been planning things. Since my clutch started slipping on take offs, I have been considering my options.
[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yXMK3xcBoE"]Zed at drags - YouTube[/nomedia]
Because the car is so light, I don’t need a hard core replacement clutch as this will ruin drivability and give me a tougher pedal. The LS7 clutches sound perfect and I will be getting one as soon as I'm set up in my new place. Replacing this for me will involve removing the engine and gearbox together so that should be fun. I have been collecting parts to do a few things while the engine is out and separated from the gearbox. Apart from a new clutch, I’ll have a new slave cylinder/throw out bearing and new spigot bearing to go in. I think my spigot is dying and the extra drag on the input shaft is keeping it turning during gear changes. A new bearing here should see my changes improve. A new braided line from the master to the slave should improve pedal feel too.
My rear main has always had a leak so I’ve got a new crank seal to go on. Hopefully that’s all it is. I’ve got a new timing chain to go on as well as an under driven balancer. I also bought a used LS1 oil pump off ebay for $1 + $10 postage. I’ve used this spare to carry out a few mods commonly done to the LS1 oil pump. Porting the inlet and exits of the pump and shimming the relief valve. Easy to do, and the extra flow may save me in on track event. All this collecting parts has me thinking about a bigger cam now. Just a small cam……. I’m pretty sure I’m going all Bogan again now. I don’t need any extra power. This thing pulls like a steam train as is, but its not enough any more. Do I install a cam while I’ve got the engine out? I’ve got that spare set of cylinder heads too. I’m thinking of given them a tickle to smooth out the ports and valve guides and port match the flange surface. Then get them shaved a bit to ‘up’ the compression. I’ve got the better valve springs to go on yet, as well as the LS6 injectors, and the custom fuel rail. I’ll probably order some ARP head bolts and flywheel bolts etc to keep it all together. Man I’ve got so much to do. I cant wait to move down there and get into a house with a shed so the fun can begin. I also have to a bit more to strengthen the chassis too. Until then….

What clutch did u end up getting?
-
Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
I got talked out of an LS7 clutch and went with a level 2 ceramic from Clutch Industries. I searched on here for others with these clutchs and there was a couple of mentions but not a lot.

Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
looking at the engine bay have you considered tilting the radiator and running a OTR or isnt there enough room
-
Re: 1971 LS1 240Z aka 570Z
Great conversion, power to weight:drool:. Would hav good balance with the motor behind the front wheels, yes?
Needs a 1/4 blast!:burnout:
The Clubbie's gunna need some serious work to catch this one.

Front to back is 50:50. Power to weight is crazy even with bolt on only power.
I wont even bother getting the clubby this fast.
I started by removing the old clutch and gerneying everything so I could see. I've had a new pilot/spigot bearing to install as well as a new slave cylinder and bearing. The rear main was leaking so had one of those to put in as well. I was going to use this oppertunity to throw in some tougher valve springs and a new timing chain but I didnt think I would make it in time so I have concentrated on the things I need to get done to run it down the strip in two weeks time. I was really happy with how everything went together today. I didnt have a puller so I need to grind the old spigot bearing out with a porting tool. The new one went in nice and evenly. The rear main came out ok, and the new one went back to the housing fine. Was a little tricky getting it back over the crank but I found it easy to run a cable tie around the seal as I pressed it over the crank to keep the seal surface facing the right way.

I extended the clutch fluid 'in' fitting so the braided hose didnt have to bend on such an angle to get to the master cyclinder.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...e250642145.jpg
I just have to get the right fitting to go into the slave on the fluid 'out' line and I will hook up a remote bleed line. It looks like an M8 x 1.25 or a common bolt thread.
