Hi all,
Just purchased a 1970 SS Chevelle in the states with a 402 big block.
The car is a factory original with 1 exception the 1972 402 big block.
My question is: Anyone out there that has had experience modifying these
engines? Any suggestions??

Big block = win.
There is sooo many mods you can do mate. They can make huge power and even bigger torque with still good drivability.
Good set of oval port heads and right size cam with some comp will get around 500hp without too much hassle
Nice cam with these things and u got urself a monster. Nick from NJC might be able to help you as ive read he loves the big blocks.

Its taken a long time to find one. Then get import approval.
Organise Internal freight, Shipping and insurance.. The list goes on and on...
So would anyone suggest doing a stroker kit?

just rego it and drive it around as is , it's got way more street cred than one needs :goodjob:
I have a roller camed all alloy big block chev in a torana hatch, they are fantastic if built properly and have a large radiator. Bigest problem over the years was keeping it cool and working out what bearing clearances needed. Most people set them up like small blocks with the same tollerances and then bearings pickup. If not mechanicaly savy, get someone like BG Engines to help you out, not cheap but you get what you pay for.

I had a '57 with a transplant 402 ( just a 396 bored out ) ended up getting Bob Fisher in Melton to build a 454 for me, DART heads cam sump blah blah,.............. just cruise the 402 for ny money.

Car arrived, Got roady and engineers..
Put 2 inch drop spindles in front and 2 inch lowered springs.
And lowered the rear 2 inches ( might go 3 inch eventually )..
I'm loving the good weather and cruising with the family..

awesome looking car would to get a Chevelle in the future myself, the wifes best mate in the states owns one and I fell in love with it when we were over there.

1970 Chevelle SS are priced between $20K USD - $30K USD depending on condition, options and all the bells and whistles.
In regards to shipping I decided to go with a 20 foot container organised by my private shipper in the US to avoid damage from other vehicles that are usually stuffed in 40 foot containers by cowboy shippers. You could save a bit on shipping if you went the multiple car route but theres a big chance of damage.. My vehicle turned up without a scratch..
Getting it over here:-
Container & Internal Freight in US was $2800
Shipping Fees, AUS customs, fumigation & warfage fees in AUS was $2000
And good old GST in AUS which is calculated on vehicle price, Shipping and warfage costs and insurances which was $3500
So as you can see its not really that cheap to bring a car over but I'm very happy with the result.
