getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
G'day lads, I'm looking to run 12.4 or better in my l76 thunder.
It currently has stainless cat back. 4-1s, otr, tune and twin plate to go in just after chrissy.
With a set of 3.9s and mt ets would it be possible to shoot for low 12s with those mods?
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
if you can peddle and its ~260-270 rwkw, should do easy, maybe in 11's.

Sweet, I'm guessing I'll need at least 110mph.
I can peddle a manual ok, ran my manual vlt years ago to a 12.2 @ 115 with a 1.5 60ft. Never ran it at the strip when it was making 330rwkw
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
What times are you running now?
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
should shit it in with a 6lt motor. i used to run 110~112 with a stock ls1 motor with exhaust, extractors 4 years ago.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
as said if you can use the clutch for a decent 60 ft !!!!easy!!! what et streets you runnin????

how the fark do people get that MPH. My cam LS1 is only doing that MPH ffs.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Cold nights :P + Manual ??
I ran a best of 111.1 mph in my bolt on m6 vy.. but avg 110mph/high 109mph
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
i'd guess maybe 113-115 mph, if its 260+rwkw zone, which a L76 with exhaust and tune should have.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
sweet fellas sounds promising. I'll let you know how it goes in Jan with exhaust, intake and tune on the 3.45s and street tyres first.
Poolkeeper I havn't ran it at the track yet but I put a car length on my mates vy ss which already has otr, 4-1s, twin 3s and tune. Also manual
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
I'd be stoked if I could break into 115mph, that would mean that 11s wouldn't be out of reach bolt on!
-
Couldn't see why not, with around 280rwkw I got a 12.14@117 with a 1.89 sixty footer in my M6 monaro with ET street radials. Prior to that with a smaller cam and 270rwkw I got a 12.38@114 with a similar sixty footer.
-
Also unsure whether it was due to a lack of skill on my behalf but the best sixty footer I could ever manage on 235/60R15 street radials was around 1.89. A mate of mine who doesn't go on the forums used the 275/??R17 street radials and managed a 1.78 sixty footer. Maybe the wider footprint generates more grip?
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
yeah I'd guess it would generate more grip.
Can anyone tell me if VS SS III (vt ss 16s) wheels will fit over my thunder brakes?
They are the 320mm rotor ones.
And ifso, would I fit 245/16 radials under it without dramas?
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
if you can get your 60s down to 1.78s, that should get you into the 11s.
What diff gears do you have and how hard are you launching it?
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
manual, forget drag radials, borrow slicks. side step at 6k and feather the clutch. unless you have stock diff gears 3.07's, then may get away with radials but anything higher go slicks.
auto's are fine however on a 235/60/15 down to high 10's, 1.5 60fts.

Yeah I did mate, I now have Weld Prostar rims with full cross ply slicks. Finally got an 11.959@116MPH with a 1.65 sixty footer. I have 3.9's and I do a very quick slip of the clutch at around 6k.
It all depends on your budget but if you intend on visiting the strip often and plan for more horsepower in the future, full slicks are the way to go when you own an M6 car.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
sweet mate cheers for the heads up.
Do the pro-stars clear your brakes without dramas?
I was looking at the pro-stars also but not sure if they will clear mine with the 320mm rotors
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
If you want to run 15' or 16' rims you will need to put stock brakes on it. Also if you run slicks you need front runners too (i guess you know this) and the costs start to add up. I think you may fit 16' rims with a spacer but i would not, but thats me i know guys have done it without any major dramas. Good luck and lets us know when your going to head out as i plan on hittng the track too after xmas.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
cheers mate, might try and track down some monaro space savers for the front and see if i can get the 16s on the rear with some wide mt streets. I know it's not ideal but **** pulling the brakes apart every time I want to run.
yep will let you know, probably mid January mate.
-
Not sure if Monaro space savers are the same as normal ones, but space savers are limited to 80km/h only, so just be careful of that
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
yeah they say 80km but I thought it was only the tyre that's on them?
Alot of guys use them with front runners
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
What about running the 17" or even 18" ET Streets, that'll clear your brakes and you should get plenty of grip. They come in 275 and wider if you have the room.
In my opinion I don't believe slicks are necessary for M6s sub-300rwkW. I used to have around 280rwkW and could manage high 1.7s 60 footers on 235/60 R15 ET streets with a rather ghey launch, I never used more than 4000rpm and got to 12.00 @ 118mph (using Monaro Space Savers) with somewhere between 270-280ish rwkW. Slicks are a goer if you going more power in the future but for bolt-on I feel that the gain you'd get from front runners would be offset by the frictional loss in the slicks at least, perhaps even go backwards a little.
Where abouts in NSW, if I can find my space savers and I'm somewhere near you and free, you'd be welcome to try them if you'd like.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Ahh sweet, might see if I can get the 16s on the rear with 255 et streets and run space savers on the front.
I'm in newcastle as well mate, what do you drive?

wasnt there an ANDRA media release about 6 months back outlawing the spacesavers for use as front runners?
edit: wow thats the easiest search Ive ever done

Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
spew, guess I'll look at getting some hsv 17s narrowed
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
I use 275 17 inch MT radials and have gone 1.5 60 foot with 400+rwkw in my M6 VE.
Most of my 60 foots in the low 1.7's and 1.6's with a bit of wheelspin, slicks would be better for me but with your setup i would go with radials for sure...
Play with pressures if you have trouble hooking up:driving:
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
cheers mate, was thinking of going some 255 17s and give that a shot
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
what brakes are on the rear of VZ SS Thunders?? thought they would clear a set of 15inch stockies easy
Anyways i know its auto v manual.
My VZ L76 Calais ran 11.89@116mph with a 1.54 60footer.
Made something around 255ish rwkw.
Mods - OTR, Full exhaust, 4500stall, 3.73 gears
Susp. - SL springs front, SLHD rears, Monroe GT Sports all round... Harrop cover if that counts. (very little to no tramp)
Tires - 195/70/15 random brand front on 15x6 ceptors, 235/60/15 ET Streets rear on 15x7 ceptors.
Full trim, minus spare tyre jack and sub box (still had the 2xMono blocks and 4channel in the boot)
Ill go find the exact details, but my mates car (RUN41T) VY SS Cammed M6 ran a couple of 11.9@118mph passes.
270ish rwkw 4.11s stockies as front runners and 235/60/15 ET Streets on 15x7 ceptors too.
6000+ rpm launches.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Anyone used circuit slicks at the strip before?
Just picked up some hoosier 19x265s with plenty of tread for a good price. I'll give these a crack in 3 weeks when I get home from work.
Hopefully get it into the low 12s with the 3.45 gears and these slicks. Had it tuned and making 264rwkw, feels very strong with the twin plate in there now too.

Sorry,accidently hit dislike.
Those are impressive figures :goodjob:
I should add my vz ss sedan m6 with 280rwkw went 11.9@113 with 1.78 60ft on some old pair of 235/60/15 my street radials.
No matter how low the tyre pressure was they wouldn't hook up and allowed it to wheelspin.
Next plan is to try some slicks.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
radials DO NOT work like slicks, with the stiff sidewall if you drop too much psi the centre folds in. i've found ~21psi is spot on. you still need to get some heat into them in burnout. also suspension set-up plays a big factor.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Cheers mate I'll run 21psi, thanks for the heads up.. I'll give it a good 2nd gear burnout for 10secs to make sure I get some heat into them.
Picked them up for $51 on ebay for 2 of them! only been used for 1 track day, heaps of tread left so can't complain even if they dont work lol
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
in theory the circuit slicks dont work but as you got em cheap why not!!!! i run full slicks and the sidewalls are very soft allowing flex acting like a spring on launch!!!! seing they are a slick and not an et radial start off at 21psi see how it goes !!! if no good try 18 psi etc etc!!! cheers
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Yeah I know they aren't gonna be ideal but surely they are going to be better than my cheap 19x245 road tyres?
I mean, craig lowndes ran a 10.8 or something in his v8 supercar on them ( I know obviously set up for them) but I'm sure it wouldn't have gone that quick on normal road tyres.
The way I see it anyway
Also, I'm guessing after a decent burnout the pressure should rise to 30+ psi so it may pay to get them down around 18. Like you said, it will be trial and error
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
ahh, missed they are a circuit slick. ask around and borrow some drag radials. waste of time with circuit slicks.
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
Have read mixed reports on using them at the track, works for some and some not. Like I said they cost me nothing so I'll see how they go for me after a long burnout
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
15's will fit no problem. I have pursuit wheels on the back of mine at the moment so i would say they are your best option for drag racing:D
-
Re: getting my m6 vz thunder into the low 12s?
is yours a thunder with the bigger brakes?

Don't do a big burnout on them. Circuit tires have an different efficiency range so don't need to be as hot as a soft drag tire. Needless to say they will be better than any street tire and should get low 12s.
If it were me et slicks and launch just off the limiter, I got 1.6x 60" in an old 5.7 VU SS on slicks.
