VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
your thoughts people?
i realise the monaro tail lights are what distinguish it from the commodores, along with the 5m tall rear window lol, but with the growing amount of people putting monaro lights on their vt-vx commodores, i though why not go the other way. hell it might be the only car out there with VT tail lights on it one day. i honestly love the look of the VT Concept Monaro that was put on show in 1998.

still contemplating whether to run the rear garnish or not

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I don't love nor do I hate it. Kind of takes away the Monaro look, but if done on the right colour car with the right wheels it may look good.
-
Yeh I like it, it doesn't look to bad, would need the garnish IMO. The colour of that car is what probably sets it off, maybe another colour might not suit
-
I say do it. If i ever bought a monaro i was going to do exactly this.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I've seen it done here and it looks great. When I was following it took a little while to work out what was so different about the "VT" ahead of me. In the flesh it does look good!
-
I've always said if I ever had a monaro I'd do it too. Looks much better than the monaro lights.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I like it too.
I'm a bit biased though.:D

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
Another vote here for the VT Monaro. That's the way it was designed.
What colour is your V2?
Mick
Edit: answered that one myself. The red should look pretty good.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
The vt garnish is too dated for my liking. The vx berlina lights and garnish could look good but
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
Looks good, really suits the lines of the Monaro.
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I've seen it done once. Definitely something I'd consider.
The concept also had a standard VT SS front end... that would be pushing the envelope but I'd probably consider making a proper Commodore Coupe concept replica...
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I ran my monaro in this form for a while and liked it. I even put my old VT S bar on it for a while. looked exactly the same as the concept vehicle. changed it all back to standard cause I had a mate that wanted to by my VT lights and garnish. Id say do it, I think it really suits it
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I think it just goes to show how great the uncluttered lines of the original VT were. Fashions change and people are always looking for the next look, but looking back you can see why it was so successful. It so easily transferred into a great looking coupe.
I think it's a very clean look, so if you don't care about what others think, do it! You can always reverse it in the future.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I loved the look of the concept, but i think the rear end suited the darker colours much better. Add to the fact that it also had VT rear bar and side skirts which may have integrated the look. In the red i like the VZ blacked out tail lights. IMO though, so go with what you like.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I agree that the Vt lights work better with the standard lights (hence my monaro lights). I have seen a vx with the standard solid garnish and the VT tail lights (just the outers), it looked pretty good, and something different. obviously there would be no reflectors or reverse lights so quite illegal but looked good anyway. have to say i love any 'hot-plate' style tail lights from skylines to monaro's so I'm biased i guess.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
im gonna give it a go. can get a brand new garnish from holden for only $130, plus some tail lights from a wreckers for the same price for a pair. i wont get rid of the original lights or garnish in case i dont like it. will post pics when its done, should be next week some time.
thanks for the opinions boys!

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
Picked up the garnish and lights today. Only thing is the plastic trim that runs under the garnish. Should I try colour match it or make it chrome sorta like the VY executive boot?

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I've seen a few photos of Pontiac GTOs with Commodore tail lights, here's one from LS1GTO (link):

Personally I'm not a fan but props for giving it a go.
I reckon the dark blood red CV8-R tail lights are the best for any colour Monaro/Coupe.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
yeh they're the VX lights, you're right, it doesnt look nice. this is the end product. will take better pics tomorrow. only difference was the rear wiring harness for the tail lights, they changed globe harness!! will take batter pics tomorrow once i get the other wiring harness and the driver side lights in...IMO i love it, always did love the VT look

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
By the way I actually made quite a few of those boot panels that you just replaced when I worked in a factory, I probably ruined more trying to schampfer the edge.

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
The wreckers had the plastic trim that goes under the garnish for $40. When I got there they had a red one too, so they gave me that one. Turns out its a VX clubsport trim with the 250 LS1 badge in the corner. Score for me!

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
here's the finished product lads. Very pleased how it turned out. took a good clay bar and polish to get it shining like it should. VT lights dropped straight in, needed to swap end harness with a VT harness on each side for the globes to plug in. I have the wiring loom for the reverse lights but will get a sparky to put them in, looks like a bit too much soldering for me.

Go down to Stratton and see the captain, he'll do it for you.

I like it, tbh if mine I would of left the centre garnish or maybe even done vx lights plus Calais/HSV garnish & removed the lion bage.
Looks good and certainly different from the others!
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I thought about leaving the garnish off and keeping it flat. Decided to run with it, I'll hook up the reverse lights and see how I feel after a few weeks. I love it so far, definitely turns heads
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I'm not a fan, it makes it look old and somewhat skinnier from the rear. Never was a fan of the vt ss rear lights. Each to their own though.

If not satisfied get the vt garnish painted, looks a lot better as a flat colour than the monaro/vx garnish as its slightly different.
-
I think it looks bloody fantastic. Was a bit sceptical about doing it on the red car but it looks top notch. Almost makes me want to sell my senator for a monaro.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. Both positive and negative
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
I think it looks great. My only niggle (could just be camera angle though), the car looks so damn high!
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
Looks pretty good to me. :yup:
I also do actually like the VX lights in the other pic too.
Never really liked the Monaro taillights much. (especially after every second commodore owner put them on too. :vpo:)
Re this car: Like it or hate it, at least its neat and tastefully done, unlike many other mods I've seen on cars. :spew:
Well done :goodjob:

Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
That was pointed out yesterday, i think its the black wheels that do it.
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
yeh could be the wheels. its only FE2 so its not SL or SSL
-
Re: VTII Lights on V2 SII Monaro
Looks good.
Only issue with that GTO with the VX tails is he won't have any rear reflectors now. You'll recall the VX had reflectors in the rear bumper.

The VX SS had the reflectors. Other models without the reflectors in the bumper have the reflectors in the taillights.
