E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Hi all.
Im new to the Forum so sorry if this has already been achived or posted.
I have an E3 GTS with the Bimodal exhaust and wanted the EDI to be fully open. I talked to HSV and they could (BUT WONT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES) change the EDI programming.
I was left at a dead end there, so i went to Walkinshaw in Clayton. The boys there said that HSV wouldnt allow it to be done throught the EDI, but that there was a way around it with minimal fuss.
They could put a bypass switch that sends a signal to the valves in the muffler to stay open regardless of what the EDI is doing. I got excited and booked it in.....
LATER THAT EVENING.................................
Sweet...Got the car back and im happy with the results. Whilst it has a slight drone now (with stock exhaust but EDI fully opened) it has that beautiful V8 rumble throughout the full rev range under any acceleration, as well as that burble and slight spitting sound in the 2-4K RPM range which would otherwise have been closed. The switch (ON) allows me to have the Bimodal fully open or (OFF) let the EDI work it all out.
Awesome job, Thanks to Walkinshaw Clayton for the fix.
Love It...and if im staying in melb (Fingers Crossed), will DEFINITELY come down for the full exhaust package. Thanks again guys

What did they charge for that service ?

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
thats a great idea- HSV should do it as an option.

They won't do that because it won't meet the ADR requirements...

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Hey all!
Too right jk, it wont pass ADR therefore HSV will never do it period. Thats where walki comes in.
AS for price to get this mod done, from what i could tell (as i had other things done) it was a few hours labour and minimal parts.
If you call them (03 9265 9700) im sure they can get a solid price based just on the mod.

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
We have something in progress on this mod so watch this space anyone that would like to have "open all the time" option on your bimodal...
-
Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Make sure there's still the option to close it "when the need arises"...:hide:

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Good to see people getting into the spirit. Damn HSV and its ADR compliance....i say let the V8 rumble and burble away to your hearts content.
Id like to know when you have it worked out JK, to see the differences in how it was done.

The EDI bimodal options will still work, there will just be a switch / remote controller to over-ride it and be fully open...

No probs another forum member is setting it up on his car so we should know soon how it went. I have also asked to see if we can put a remote controller negating the need for a switch...

Oem looking switch would be good, know of varex customers getting stung by members of the force with a bit of knowledge on these systems by spotting the switch

Very interested in remote controller option!!! nice work

Factory bimodal on E3 GTS so cant really be stung by police....varex an aftermarket bimodal?

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
the remote option will be like the remote to open a garage more than likely
-
Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
sounds good...easy to pass off as standard remote for anything.

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Smartphone app that can talk to the vehicle's bluetooth??

hahaha nice idea but i have not the slightest clue on how to do anything like that, using a switch or remote switch is piss easy to setup and install

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Hehe lol yeah id like to see that, but i dont think that would be in the near future :yup:

Fark that..I just will be happy to be able to flick a switch or press a button to keep the bimodal open when required :yup:

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Agreed...im happy with my switch...love it.

See that little switch in the glove box. Thanks to a great post by EORS and Y.B.Shy on the HSV forum, I did this 45 min mod myself yesterday and it worked a treat. Now I have a bimodal bypass that I can turn on or off and have the best of both worlds.....:)

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Naturally, it was supplied for "track purposes use only"
remember lots of people read these posts, and we should protect the suppliers that help us .... :-)

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Further to this, and instead of starting a new thread, has anyone done something similar on the Gen-F?
Also, as pointed out by the OP, the exhaust set to full open drones. To avoid this, utilising the bimodal to close during the drone period (typically between 1000rpm and 2300rpm) and keeping it open at all other times would suit the needs of most auto owners I'd imagine.
Has anyone worked out how to change the variables or parameters for the open/close rpm on a gen-f? I called the shop who did the work for the OP when I got my Maloo in July last year and was told that the tub liner has to be removed to run the wiring for the switch. The labour to do so would end up costing me more than it would for a sedan/wagon. Somewhere around the $600 mark apparently. Not what I was willing to spend.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
I know people who have set up a reverse camera on VE/VF utes without removing the tub liner. You only have to be able to pull the driver's side away from the body to access the wiring. Even if the liner had to come out you can do it yourself and save money.

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Can someone confirm if the standard bimodal exhausts are the same a varex, when they are open they are straight through pipes and closed they get routed through the muffler?
I thought they were controlled by vacuum aswell?

Factory are operated by vacuum, aftermarket are wired

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Yeh that I know. How does edi control the vacuum tho?

You shouldn't need to access the tub liner wiring. Its just a matter of being able to 'open circuit' the 'control' wire, from the EDI controller, to the solenoid that controls the vacuum valves on the Bi Modal mufflers. Its all done under the dash. You just need a switch, a length of wire, and a location for the switch( a hidden, handy position). If it drones, switch it off. A rubber mat in the tub helps with drone.
There was someone on the HSV forum that was working on re-programming the EDI controller, but I haven't heard of any progress on this.....

Revs...I think for memory it opens the vacuum at 3,500 rpm

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Do these have a dedicated fuse for the valves? If so, couldn't you just pull the fuse to have them open all time time? Popular 'mod' with the C6 corvette which had a similar system from memory.

No. They have a vacuum line to the engine bay which is operated by the ECU...

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Without knowing the patticulars with this mod, whats stopping you wiring via a shift light set to say 2500rpm so that it opens then outside of the drone zone? (you don't need the shift light installed just the electronics that sense the rpm

Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
Thanks everyone for the responses.

This is what sparked my interest initially, almost a year ago now. Surely the tub liner doesn't have to be removed at all. Like you said, isn't it just a matter of tapping into the right wire under the dash?
I like where Toddler is heading with his thoughts, there must be a way to create an electronic switch that operates via rpm and can open the bimodal from say, 2500rpm...
-
Re: E3 GTS with Bimodal set to Fully Open
It only takes about 15min for one person to pull the tubliner out anyway....!
