Just watching practice from today, they sound shit!!!!!!!
The reason I don't drive a turbo V6...
Looks like they only rev to about 12K as well, I loved hearing that 5K idle on the V8,s:-)
Why do the new F1 turbo cars sound so whimpy yet the 80s F1 turbo cars with similar capacity and less peak revs sounded so damn angry? We all know the 80s engines had double the horsepower but is that the only reason why these new engines sound so poor or is there more to it?
Compare 80s...

I tuned in today to hear the disappointment aswell. Last i seen in P2 they were about 3 seconds off the P2 times of last year. Did they get any closer?
They certainly don't sound like the big bangers from the 80's. But they also only have 5 engines to last the season so obviously they aren't working them as hard.
While the sound will be missed. The technology is impressive. How the teams execute it will be very good for the sport I believe.

No V8, no care.
If I had my way I'd bring back the screaming V12s.
All this stuff about energy regeneration, using less fuel is all well and good but i want to see a race not an economy show.
Make them electric, then we'd see some battery advancement, that would be usable in everyday cars/life.
Bit of a shame. the 1 thing i remember when i went to Albert park the first year was the noise that hit me when the first car came around the corner. Look at the bright side it makes our V8 Supercars even more mouth watering than they already are
At least you don't need ear muffs anymore
Another Motorsport ruined.
The sound is terrible but at least they look a bit better than last year, the old high nose cars looked ugly.
Unfortunately we have to move with the times, F1 is about cutting edge technology and hybrid power, waste heat recovery, kinetic energy storage, etc. is where its at now.
I think it was Ferdinand Porsche that said he didn't like noisey race cars because the sound was wasted energy that could be better used to make the car go faster.
Next thing they will make Top Fuel quiet.
Yes they sound boring. Like a super bike type sound. It would be interesting if the aftermarket could adapt some of the tech to our "junk". Be pretty good if we could have a turbo with less or no lag but still have the top end. Maybe an electric motor jammed in somewhere (part of the flywheel???) for a shot of electric NOS. May never happen however an interesting thought.
I agree, but that's the problem with the organization running F1, they've taken the series off its unhealthy diet and put in onto allbran chia seeds & tofu. The whole point of F1 to me is the sound of the powerful engines whether they be V8 or V12 and one of my favourite is the 3.0litre Ford Cosworth out of the Lotus 72.

How does rob mills and that charlie boorman wanker get a celebrity race gig ?
Ricer motors in F1 and Volvo just won a V8 Supercar race ........... global warming ?????
They do sound rubbish, though I can't work out why. They are V6 engines which rev to 15,000rpm. They have turbos but it isn't impossible for a turbo to sound good. I wonder if it is to with the energy generation from the exhaust which presumably is like some form of turbo generator also in the exhaust flow.
They are talking about a pure electric formula but it requires compulsory stops to replace the whole battery every few laps. Battery technology has a long, long way to go.
How's the broadcast, it's a bloody morning show, waiting for kochi to walk in
You serious, have you ever watched one of Charlies adventures? The guy is a champ.
They had Amanda Keller with the douche bag fake laugh. That and the amped up crap music at every opportunity reeked of amateurism.
I agree they sound crap, but the race was definitely one of the better ones at Melbourne. One positive aspect of the new motors is the torque, there was some good sideways moments from a few drivers.
Both the V8 race and the F1 race were brilliant, Channel 10 needs to dump all of the unrelated crap during the broadcast...
I kinda rated the Chick in the red tho.... :)
A good technical overview of the 2014 F1 power package.

Stepped headers on a turbo is something I've never seen before, all very interesting.
There was more over taking in the 1st 3 laps than all of last year..
Best qualifying session for many year. Using all of the tyres from medium compounds to soft, onto inters for a shower, full wets, back to inters.
Dan is proving his worth and was spectacular in quali as well as running a great race. Got a bit of a Webber start and cost him the win.
Looking forward to the full season. Yes the sound of the engine are crap, but I wanted them to get rid of a lot of the downforce which they have done and some of the sideways action was great!
It was interesting to see how many cars simply pull out so early. Shows the new tech no matter how many $ you throw at it will never be perfect. I was interested to see the leaf blowers being used to keep air flow going until I saw the first car crash out and the smoke pouring out from around the wheels. A lot of heat there and it seems to hold it for a long time.
No idea why they need to have a maximum flow rate for the fuel. Surely it shouldn't matter because they have a limit on the amount of fuel you can use so it wont effect any fuel efficiency innovation spin offs to the street if thats the whole reason for having the regulation.
Might explain the sudden leap in performance since testing ended...
Shame about Dan being disqualified from the race...hope they get it sorted for Malaysia.....as long as the plane doesn't disappear :hide:
yep, all staged
and he lost any respect from me when he took the piss outa that poor Papuan ( in Sydney to Tokyo )
and labeled them all scamming thieves , in the typical the british colonising pig way .....
Re Ricciardo's disqualification , he'll get it back after they reinterpret the rule ;)
I wasn't there in person but based on this comparison, yeah, the sound is ruined:

Wow those old v8's sound even better when you compare them to this years turbo's.
The move towards more road-relevant tech is a great move, but who gives two shits about being eco friendly in any tier of car racing, let alone a class that's meant to be the pinnacle?
And as for all electric, the FIA has a new formula-E class apparently coming this year: http://www.fiaformulae.com/
