That's last years 2016 old bike, still on runout...
The 2017 GSX-R1000/R is the most major upgrade in years, new everything, hence the large price rises...
Still no 2017 info on Suzuki Australia web site, but heaps of info about it outside Australia.
2017 US prices have been released already as follows.
Base - $14599 USD
ABS - $14999 USD
R model - $16999 USD
So converted to Aussie
Base - $19103 AUD
ABS - $19626 AUD
R model - $22243 AUD
PLUS.... The Australia TAX....

I'll keep my S1000RR This thing doesn't even have forged wheels or an electronic suspension option. The engine looks to have possibly caught BMW from 7 years ago though, so that's good [emoji23] but we shall see on the dyno

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
It's going to be very interesting, to see how it compares to all the other brand 1K sports bikes, once they get tested together...
Suzuki has been behind all the others, for the last few years with only minor updates. This is their Major Redesign on everything, and with variable valve timing too...
It's already done a 1.38 sec lap around Phillip Island in full street trim by a Journo this week....
Shaun Giles rode it yesterday at Phillip Island, and comment about it, in a video on the Suzuki Motorcycles Australia FB page....
Here's a good read on how John Reynolds (3 time BSB champion) was employed by Suzuki Japan, to do all the test rider setup of the traction control system with the Suzuki Engineers in Japan...

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
That must have been one super fast journo (racer working for a magazine maybe?) if they went 1min 38 on a street bike around Phillip island.
I remember watching Robert Bugden lap Queensland Raceway in 1min 16 on a showroom R1 with decent tyres about ten years ago and Darryl Beattie lapping 1 min 17's on a dead stock (including tyres) GSXR 750 complaining he was out of shape. Nobody on any street bike and even some race bikes were getting anywhere near that.
Any of the 1000cc super sports for at least the last ten years has way more ability than 99.9% of people who'll ever buy them to ride on the road or even track days for that matter. Personal brand preference, looks/colours or riding comfort (relative of course, none of them are likely to be very comfortable) are probably the only real differences if you're looking to buy one, splitting hairs over 5hp or a few less kilos isn't going to make a lot of difference.

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
Biggest interest to me reading this thread was how good a deal the /016 model is for $15,999.
Secondary to that, is this bike a game changr? Had a 2003 and 2006 gsxr1000. You could definitely feel the advance between the models and even to my previous 99 R1 and then my 2008 ZX10R was also a cut above. But fact is I still have my 2008 ZX10R. I have it setup the way I like. It inherently suits taller riders. I rode a 2013 ZX10R a couple of years ago and whilst I appreciate that it had more power, I was not faster on it and could t wait to get back on my 2008 bike.
I agree re S10000RR. That is a bike that will go down in the history books. Made the japs lift their game and they may well still be catching up.

Here's the two quotes from the Suzuki Motorcycles Australia FB page, referencing the 1.38 at Phillip Island...
"A stock GSX-R1000R, Bridgestone R10 tyres good enough for 1:38s around the island...need we say anymore..."
This was Suzuki Australia response, when someone asked who the rider was...
"Two journos, one from Japan and one from Poland"
I have a GSX-R1000 K2, which I bought brand new and still have today, still going super strong...
K5 / k6 was the next big step up for Suzuki, but since then, they have only been doing minor updates, and have been behind for quite some time.
So this all new 2017 design is looking to put, Suzuki back to the top of the pile again... Time will tell with the group tests of all the liter Supersports, from all the other manufactures together...
The BMW S1000RR has been killing everything, and is the current King of the liter Supersport bikes 100%, even when the all new R1 came out and Joey Dunlop only did 1 day or so on it at the Isle Of Mann, before he jumped ship, straight back onto his previous S1000RR for the rest of the Isle of Mann event, as the R1 was too slow, and un-competitive.... Yamaha would of been spewing....
BMW also directly compared the K5 as it was the current bench mark at the time, when they were designing and testing the S1000RR, I read somewhere...
The game changer is going to be the VVT which broadens the power band, from the middle of the range to red line, instead of all the power only being at the top end of the range...
No other Liter Supersport bike has VVT that I'm awear of...
-
Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
Ducati version of VVT. Mind you they have chosen not to use it on their Panigale models.
https://youtu.be/nWWu2jC3SU4
I think Suzuki's simple and somewhat elegant way of incorporating it might get other brands interested. Really depends on the gain it provides in relation to the added inertial weight in the valvetrain. It really will only add benefit to low/mid range, which is something no litre bike really lacks. Still more is better.
Yamaha could use it the most. They went cross plane to improve low end back in the day, now they've cammed it etc to get back some power up top to try be competitive with everyone else. It's subsequently turned it into an engine that's not really good at anything except sounding good

From the video I linked above, it says the Suzuki SR-VVT system, retards the valve timing at a preset set RPM from centrifugal force as the balls move radially outwards when they over come the preloaded spring pressure, significantly boosting high RPM power...
It also said the engines maintains power in the low and middle ranges, whiling boosting RRM for greater peak power. The new F1 style pivoting finger followers cut weight, which allows the engine to rev higher...
The SR-VVT provides the power at the top end of the Rev range...
Suzuki GSX-R1000's have always had awesome mid range power, so this new system is going to get the best of both worlds...

I expect all 1000cc supersports would be capable of similar in the hands of very fast journos (racers paid by magazines/websites).

Maybe Michael Dunlop unless some sort of divine intervention occured, I don't think even BMW are that good.

I do remember hearing that at the time now, I'd forgotten about it. He obviously feels more comfortable on the BMW, he's certainly the fastest bloke around there in the last couple of years and the current lap record holder so who can argue.

In the end Micheal Dunlop on the BMW S1000RR won by a full 20.561 seconds... That's a large margin, especially at the speeds there doing....
2014 Superbike TT final standings.[edit]
31 May 2014 6 Laps (226.38 Miles) Mountain Course.

The same year I bought my 2002 GSX-R1000 K2 brand new, David Jeffries did an on board lap on the exact same bike, explaining how he rides the TT course in great detail...
I have the full quality dvd at home, but this low quality version, is the same one...
Unfortunately only a couple of years later he died on the TT course...

I agree that's a big margin but there's more to that gap than just bike superiority of course, pit stops, tyre degradation etc, the video I posted is pretty even for that particular lap (balls like watermelons those guys, damn).
Michael Dunlop on the BMW is certainly the rider to beat at the moment. I'd love to see Guy Martin finally win one and John McGuiness pick up at least a couple more though, who knows maybe this year, they're teamed up on Hondas.
We've taken the thread a bit off track here, sorry man.

Already a done deal, John McGuinness and Guy Martin will be team mates, on the all-new Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 this year.
Cool combination...

In the real world... for the average Joe riding on the street, and doing the odd track day here and there, forged wheels and electronic suspension options aren't going to make stuff all difference, other than bragging rights...
Forged or Carbon wheels, can always be added after the fact anyway, if your want to spend lots more...
If the BMW DDC every stops working or gets a fault, it'll cost crazy coin to fix it...

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
I hadn't watched that video of Guy Martin and John McGuiness, it was like a comedy duo, great stuff. Guy Martin has done some really cool TV programs that have been shown over here in recent times, his quirkiness and humour makes them really enjoyable to watch, a genuine character.
John McGuiness has raced at the island classic the last few years, it would be cool to get there for a look and meet him one day, he seems like a really down to earth bloke. The first time I saw an interview with him where he said something like "I'm nothing special, just a brick layer from Morecombe, come up and say hi" (who just happens to be the second greatest IOMTT race winner in history).
I hope they both do really well teamed up together, it should make for a few laughs in the pits.

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
A Tea company should sponsor Guy Martin, considering he always has a cup in his hand, and drinks it by the "Gallon" everyday... Fueling one of the fastest "REAL ROAD RACERS" in the World....
Would be a Awesome marketing opportunity 100%... Throw all that (red bull / V / monster) Rubbish, Straight In The Bin........ Hahaha....

Completely to the contrary mate. You need to sample one in a variety of conditions to really appreciate it. DDC is incredible with its ability to be able to adapt to varying conditions, let alone allow user changes on the fly (think MRC, but on steroids). Its more apparent for the street than the track in that regard, but it shines in both environments. Plus its always setup. Once you dial in the mechanical preload there is nothing more to you really have to do. Its like having a suspension guru on your back constantly making tweaks to improve your ride. I have mine set soft in sport mode for commuting. For my user config I have it baselined and let the DDC do the array of adjustments it does. For the track I bump up the front dampening a bit but that's it.
Forged wheels are one of those things that once you've had them, you will never want to ride a bike without them. It makes turn in feel like you're on a smaller class bike. I've ridden S1000's with both, and I can lane change hands free on cruise control (another thing that's disappointing others haven't adopted, as again once you've had it you won't want another bike without it) with the tweak of an arse cheek on the highway with the much lighter forgies. Its an $1800 option from BMW. Compare that to aftermarket and its a bargain, which is why many people have taken on the option.

There's no doubt they work well and would be nice to have... but they aren't deal breakers IMO... and are options on the S1000RR, so not mandatory.
The difference between having them fitted, and not having them fitted, and making you ride faster on the street / trackday, would be Extremely Small...
On race bikes, they rip all the OEM front forks / rear shock's out of them most of the time, and replace them with non electronic race units anyway...
Yes the OEM cruise control on the S1000RR is a very cool feature...
The best thing I've done to improve the grip on my GSX-R1000 K2 is fit, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V2's, there stupid expensive to buy, as every dealer wants full RRP for them, so zero discounting at all.... but they are the best tyres I've ever fitted in the past 15 years with the bike, Bar None IMO.... they are Crazy Good!!! (95% of time on street)
Was previously using Pilot Powers for years, but finally upgraded to the Supercorsa's, and won't be buying anything else other than them in the future.
Coming out of corners on the power, I can apply more power early, while still leaned over, compared to the Pilot Powers.
They just grip and go... can't get enough of them...
What tyre's do you currently have on your S1000RR ?
-
Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
Disagree mate. The added confidence DDC gives on the street is awe inspiring. The bike makes me look faster than I really am as none of my mates can hit twisties faster than me on other bikes. It's certainly not me. It's the bike.
Yep they are great tyres. Standard on the S1000rr when you get forgies and the traction control is tweaked to take advantage of the 200 rear. I've moved away from them due to wear though. Rosso Corsas now are almost as good but offer a harder middle section. The s21s are meant to be brilliant too. Lots of mates using them who have previously had Supercorsas
-
Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
I don't think Macca is saying he is necessarily faster with the added bits and pieces on the bike, his point is that the bike feels much nicer to ride with the added features. And if you look at the price of the s1000rr's they really are great value if not best value bike out now. I remember going from my z750 to the CBR1000rr. I'm not necessarily faster on the road twisties but damned if the bike doesn't feel like it eats it all up way better than the Z did.
-
2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
Yep it's about feeling confident. Take the new R1. A very capable track bike, but take it through some undulating twisties and it will knock the crap out of most people's confidence and subsequently slow them down. With DDC that doesn't happen. It always feels planted from table top flat circuits to Himalayan twisties. You simply can not get that wide a variety of suspension compliance with regular suspension.
I suspect this Gixer will be just like the ZX10 in that regard. Time will tell

First Independent Dyno Numbers are in, that I have come across...
Quote from PCR Performance FB below...
"GSXR 2017 Dyno comparison with 2017 ZX10r & 2016 R1 all standard bikes as they arrive from the dealer , ran on my dyno with the same rear tyre to keep it a fair comparison.
Red line is a 2016 R1
Green line is a 2016 ZX10r
Blue line a 2017 GSXR 1000
Looks like it may become a GSXR cup at race meetings across the country."
Link...
Looking very promising for the all new 2017 GSX-R1000...
Pity they didn't have a BMW S1000RR for comparison on the same day, time will tell...
Suzuki's Awesome Mid Range Trait, is very self evident... The New SR-VVT kicks in around 10000 RPM I read somewhere, and is providing all the strong Top End Power...
Bring it on...

Missed this post...
Everybody is entitled to there own opinion, I'll leave it at that...
The S1000RR is an Awesome looking bike IMO for sure...
The S1000RR is the current bench 100% and I was on the verge of buying one, until about a year or year and a halve ago, when I first heard about the rumors of the all new GSX-R1000 was coming out, and it was going to be a major overhaul of everything... not just colours / stickers and a few minor tweaks like the last few years...
So this is the reason why I have held off buying, until I can see how good its going to be...
Its looking promising so far...

Re: 2017 GSX-R1000/R World Media Launch at Phillip Island This week...
That's a super impressive power curve especially compared to the other two, no one will ever use all that on the road and not many could on the track. The traction control will have it's arsehole hanging out trying to stop that wheel spinning.
It's unbelievable how they manage to keep refining these horizon suckers to make more and more power like they do. The most I've ever ridden was a Fireblade on the track years ago with about 145hp and it was bloody fast, add another 50hp and less weight to that .
