Description/extras: You’ve heard the stories. You’ve seen pictures. This is the reality.
This is the Ford Falcon XA GTHO Phase 4, the only car to make front page news, be mentioned in parliament and change the face of motor racing in Australia forever.
Bathurst 1971. The XY GTHO Phase 3 dominates qualifying for the The Great Race with eight of the top 10 grid positions wearing the Blue Oval. 130 laps of Mt Panorama later Phase 3 drivers make it a Ford lockout on the podium with Allan Moffat on the top step. Ford rules Bathurst one again and Falcons fly out of showrooms across Australia.
1972 sees Ford, Holden and Chrysler hell-bent on bringing bigger, better, faster cars to race on Sunday to help sell the road-going equivalents on Monday. The fight is on.
Holden has the LJ Torana but now with a V8. Chrysler looks to the 340ci V8 to boost its Charger and Ford has a brand new model with a more aerodynamic body to slice through the air down Conrod Straight. The ‘Big Three’ are hungry for racing glory and they are putting everything into making the fastest cars they can.
160MPH ‘Super Cars’ Soon screamed the headlines on 25 June 1972. A week later, the Torana XU2
would be a dream, the 340ci Charger would be forgotten and the XA GTHO Phase 4 would be dead.
“Bullets on Wheels” was what the secretary for the N.S.W Minister for Transport whispered directly into the ear-hole of a journalist looking for a scoop who spewed the message onto the front page of the daily newspapers. This was ‘The Super Car Scare’ and for better or worse it changed Aussie performance cars forever.
This XA GTHO is one of only three race cars made before the Super Car Scare forced Ford to abandon its plans to continue the legend of the GTHO Phase cars and dominate racing in Australia. Built in Ford’s Special Vehicles unit known as ‘Lot 6’ these three Phase 4 cars were going to be driven by Allan Moffat and Fred Gibson with one car as a spare. Sadly this never happened.
The rarity of the Phase 4 has given the car mythical status and now it sits at the pinnacle of Aussie muscle cars with a legend, a back story, and a value that is unparalleled.

I agree. I'd like to learn more about this car, and I agree, if it IS the real deal, it will make "Huge Money".

Not registered.
This was built by Ford Factory Racing Team, they built up 3 of them before the plug was pulled.

I agree with this. How can this be considered a "genuine" ph4 when it wasn't built as one.

It's as genuine as plenty of the other earlier model GTHO Falcons (Phase 1, II, & III) developed by the Ford Factory Race Team that raced at Bathurst
I reckon it will make over $800,000 at auction. :yup:

You're correct, there's only one registered PhIV, a friend of mine knows the owner and has been in it. He is not into Aussie/ muscle cars and couldn't understand the fuss over this "ugly old" car

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
.. the history of these 4 vehicles has been well covered by a number of
mags - Street Machine, AMC etc over the years
This, from Street Machine, summarises it perfectly imo
"Four XA GTHO Phase IV Falcons were built and subsequently sold. One was the only production Phase IV built and
that was sold through Jack Brabham Ford in NSW. It was a Calypso Green four-door sedan and it’s the only one of
the four to carry a compliance plate that identifies it as a GTHO. It came with a bunch of options including air-con,
sunroof and fast glass. It’s now owned by a collector in Sydney and hasn’t been seen in public for years.
The other three were racecars being prepared by the Ford factory racing team. They were all standard XA GTs as
delivered to the Ford Special Vehicles factory in Mahoneys Road where they were built up to Phase IV specs by
the race-team mechanics. The three XA racecars had ‘QC’ motors, hand-built and blueprinted. These were a $250
option on the Phase III for those buyers intending to race their cars."
oh and...
Mahoneys Rd had the infamous 'Lot6' factory Ford used for development of the GTHOs over the years

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
You could just buy this one for a comparable song at $135k and drive it :)
And yes, I know it is not a Phase IV.

I remember that sign, simply a piece of wood, with "Lot 6" roughly painted on it,....went past it squillions of times,...we all knew what was goiing on in there, but none of us ever got inside,......actually I don't know anyone that did!

When compared with other Aussie Muscle sold recently, I reckon this car would be worth at least four times that amount?
Pickles.

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
It's certainly a rare & collectible car, with Ford racing links and pedigree - however, it's not a "matching numbers" car & it lacks the critical compliance plate stamping (unlike the Calypso green P4). It will still sell for a premium & really the only limit is what someone is prepared to pay. My guess is around the $1.25m figure...

Well then, we're about "equal" in our estimate?.....But, it only takes two who want it, and if ya had "Two Bowdens", who knows?

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
Interesting how the last 3 bids have been by the same bidder... Hmmm...
19/9/18... Bidder # C218915... $305K
21/9/18... Bidder # C285533... $310K
23/9/18... Bidder # C285533... $320K
30/9/18... Bidder # C285533... $405K
I don't have access to the bid history, I have just been noting it down each day it changes, so I could of missed a bid.

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
New Bidder...
02/10/18... Bidder # C182476... $410K

Yeah, there is quite a few people wanting to buy it as I would have expected. :yup:
I wouldn't think that all the serious buyers would even be bidding on it at this early stage because the auction has over 2 weeks to go. (No point in pushing the price up.)
I think it's around about half way there at the moment.

Hmmm...... 2 bidders, bidding against themselves 3 times in row... looks dodgy to me...
That might explain why the bid history is not shown...
Only 4 bidders from 8 bids.
-
Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
There would be absolutely nothing dodgy going on with the bidding. :nono:
Quite often when people bid on online auctions they enter an amount in a "Maximum bid" box (not just a single one off bid)
then if someone else bids there bid is not shown, only the next allowed increment of bidding by the other person is shown, thus bidding seems to be bumped up.
(Same as on ebay)
Example, if the bids were at $300,000 & someone (let's call that person "Bidder X") put on a maximum bid of $500,000
every time someone else placed a bid under the $500,000 it would just show that bidder ("Bidder X") being the highest bidder with the price rising
until someone outbid the $500,000 maximum bid.
Quite often outsiders can't see the "hidden" bids.
-
Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
It must be set up (like ebay) to incremently increase your bid after a certain amount of time to your maximum
-
Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
The bid history should be shown IMO, then the process would be completely open, for everybody to track the actual bid progression in real time.

Exactly!
A few points...
One would be that these guys & auctions are heavily regulated, these guys are not cowboys & won't risk being fined & closed down for falsifying bids.
Another... This is a very rare car which will attract buyers.
Another... Auction company does not own the car & only make money (a very healthy commission) if they sell it so they would not risk a false bid which might lose a genuine sale.
Another... This is a very high profile car & auction, there are way too many people watching to do anything dodgy.
I wonder what the reserve price is & if it will achieve it? :hide:

It probably would show more information to registered bidders.

Why not just show the bid histroy in the first place to everybody, not just registered bidders, so simple, totally avoids any doubt whatsoever.

I don't think many people would be doubting anything & it doesn't matter if anyone believes whatever they wish anyway.
Some people still think the world is flat!
It's regulated, it's clean!
Let's move back on topic.

I never said Lloyds Auctions was dodgy...
My point being... it would look dodgy, if it was shown that a single bidder was biding against themselves, multiable times in a row. Without a complete bid history list, we don't know this for a fact.
If the history was shown, and people could see that there are heaps of different people bidding, not just one bidder against themselves... that would create vastly more interest in the auction.

In your second last post you posted that you never said there is anything dodgy?
You are the only one trying to cast doubt.
They know what they are doing & have a very good reputation, the bidding on the auction is going well.
Now, for the very last time, as they say at auctions "fair warning"... leave it alone!

Re: Genuine Phase IV GTHO For Sale
It's gone over a million dollars now.
It's currently at one million, ten thousand dollars with over 9 days to go. :goodjob:
