Re: Pickles salvage Victoria
I have always been put off with the idea of buying anything that is listed on the WOVR for two reasons.
Firstly, the vehicle remains on the listing forever which makes it very hard to sell at a later date.
Secondly, I believe it is very hard to get a decent comprehensive insurance cover on anything listed on there. Anyone have more info on this?

Yes they will let you pay an insurance policy for just about any vehicle (they don't even ask VIN most of the time)
but they do check when there is a claim so I would advise anyone to fully disclose any WOVR details before taking out a policy.
I think the best bet would be to insure with a company who would inspect the vehicle and give a written appraised value before taking out the policy.
Re: Pickles salvage Victoria
You’re not under any obligation to tell your insurance company that the car is a repairable write off, they don’t ask you that . you need to notify them of your driving/claim history and any in repaired/existing damage but if the vehicle has been fully repaired and not have anything unrepaired you would be good. You are not required to disclose more than you need to.
I have purchased two vehicles via pickles auctions. First one was for spare parts so didn’t need to do anything once purchased and in my possession.
The second vehicle I have purchased, paid my money picked the vehicle up the next day went into motor reg filled out a form, showed my drivers licence, provided them with a tax invoice from pickles paid my money they walked away and came back with new plates all told 10min exercise and a lot easier then I expected.
Insurance same, I got a quote to insure it and had no problems. At no point was I asked about the vehicles history

Todd, that is not the same thing, the vehicles mentioned by the OP are currently flagged as "Repairable Write Offs"
and will need comprehensive government inspections to make sure they have been properly repaired using legally obtained parts.
This means proper receipts for all new parts and all second hand parts from the wreckers need to have VIN details from the vehicles they were obtained.
At the government vehicle inspection station Regency Park, here in South Australia they are very strict on this & go through them like a dose of salts
to check for any use of stolen parts & stolen vehicle re birthing.
I know quite a number of people who have been through it.

What about putting the car into your name?..Was it registered when you bought it,....to get it into your name would you not require a RWC?.....but for sure well done to you in getting your situation under control.

Hey Martin, there are no RWC's in South Australia.
(There is a government inspection station but that is used for identification checks, safety, engineering, defect clearing etc.)
In most cases, as long as it has South Australian number plates attached
& unless a vehicle registration has been flagged to stop it being on the road for some reason
you can transfer it at any Services SA office, delegate or simply online........ https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving...r-registration
EDIT:
I have found this article on the Government's PPSR website warning people about not doing proper checks before buying a car.
I thought it was interesting.
https://www.ppsr.gov.au/education-hu...pairable-write
Also found some interesting points in the this video

Vehicle wasn’t registered when I purchased it nor did it have plates so I thought it was going to be a drama. I went in before purchase to enquire to see how many hoops I’d have to jump through. And none, didn’t have to get it inspected to check vin or stolen parts, which surprised me.
Ed in regards to wovr I think you definatly have to pick your vehicles but if you’re dealing with a stolen and recovered and it has maybe some minor damage and maybe key barrels needing replacing then like you said yes you need to document the work price where you got the parts from with tax invoices and make sure there is nothing still stolen on the vehicle, and I think it wouldn’t be too hard to pick up a cheap car and get it going again.
The first purchase I made through pickles salvage was for the purpose of a doner vehicle to use all the parts from it to put on my vehicle I already owned in my name, so something else you could do, is buy a. Cheap clapped out commodore and then use the salvage vehicle as your parts car. Then you skip the whole rego debacle.

Hence the quality of vehicles on SA roads is deplorable. Even NT has a basic Pink slip system checking tyres, brakes etc on an annual basis. For some reason even the RAA is against introducing an annual inspection to improve the basic safety of vehicles on our SA roads.

Sorry but I can't agree with you on that one Rod.
(If we had to get proper full roadworthy checks done here how would your Calais go for
emissions testing, height, tint, the supercharger, wheel size and possibly other stuff? Even your ute? I know I might have some problems as well.)
The MTA is still pushing for it but it is widely believed that they are just self motivated towards picking up extra millions of dollars business for their member workshops.
I have been in the trade for many years, I used to be involved with the MTA & have a mate who was very high up in there.
(When I worked with him I actually attended many MTA board meetings)
I know there is some corruption in the systems in other states.
In Victoria if you know the right people you can get the rules bent,
I used to know a guy over there who did 3 different roadworthy certificates for me over the phone from South Australia.
I also had a mate in Queensland who told me he could have got things through the same if I had wanted.
Yet if you are not in the know, you are forced to pay out money for inspections & sometimes get extorted by these inspectors to give them work.
It is all open to corruption, I even have heard of people who have got through problems at the government VIS in South Australia from knowing the right people.
RAA does not support them because it would cost their members money & I have seen statistics that prove that it is only a very minimal
amount of crashes which are actually CAUSED BY an unroadworthy fault on a vehicle.
It's like guns, guns don't kill people, it's the person handling them.
With cars, it's down to the nut behind the wheel. :driving:
Re: Pickles salvage Victoria
There is also plenty of unlicensed, disqualified drivers getting around,
some driving unregistered cars & plenty with strange substances running through their veins.

Fair call Ed, and I don't disagree with you at all, I am aware you are well versed on this stuff :) Could they not though, just have a simple safety check like I had to go through when we first posted to Darwin from Nowra with 3 x NSW registered cars? It was not about picking on modifications or the like, just a 30 minute visual check ie Tyres, seatbelts etc and then a quick fang around the block with a brake testing device. I don't know, maybe I am missing something, but surely this would weed out the kents that don't give a flying F about maintaining their vehicle? But, tt also might render 30 percent of SA cars unroadworthy immediately, and I assume they don't want that, imagine the lost revenue? As it stands though, like you said, I have more chance I getting my extremely well maintained Holden's put off the road than some new Aussie in a Camry with bald tyres, no brakes and leaking more oil that the exxon valdez lol

Yeah, that is a whole different can of worms. Also people on international license with no demerit points to accumulate, pay the fine and continue to drive like a twat.

I was following a 4 cylinder, around 2001 vintage??? (guessing???) Camry the other day
which was bumping along the road, it was bouncing in different directions each time it hit a slight bump, looked like it was sitting on the bump rubbers,
camber of the wheels was hanging them right out at the bottom, it could in no way be described as in even in fair condition (it was a rough, very tired ex Taxi by the looks)
& I was left wondering why anyone would do that?
I was sure that any police officer who saw it would pull him straight over for a defect notice.
Hey, years ago when I was young and got a few defect notices on cars or needed RWC's in Victoria
we would simply swap wheels, tires, springs, exhausts or whatever we needed to get the car through,
I am sure loads of people have done and will keep doing the same.
Paying some monkey $400 or $500 extra income won't change much
& it could possibly put that 4 new tires they need out of the budget so they borrow them to go through the inspection instead.

I think the Police are stretched beyond their limit Ed. I was next to a Camry the other day that had (I shit you not) no front bar, no headlights and no front left quarter panel/guard. Would not have looked out of place in Venezuela

They’re not stretched. They are simply not interested in anything that doesn’t result in revenue, no way those cars would ever see the road again just buy another sh1t box and continue. They know that you or I are going to spend the money to get our cars back on the road.
Same as crime not interested in catching the real criminals but have no problems extracting money from everyday aussies via fines.

Agreed but the police are only doing what the government tells them to do.
It's like loads of things in the world today where we have accountants running everything and the advice of people in the front line quite often ignored.

Yes it is that a bit, but in their defence they are sick of arresting scum bags only for the courts to let them off. Look at the crazy antivaxer chick that got off with a suspended sentence for attacking a pregnant cop and ripping her hair out.
So for that I do feel for them but dealing with them fairly often and I have served them up offenders to them on a platter with evidence of their offending the can’t even be bothered crossing the road to arrest offenders. I’ve had my store robbed by an armed offender I’ve chased them down, restrained them and then been assaulted by do gooders whilst waiting for police to attend. Only to be told that they won’t press charges on the armed offender or the member of public for assaulting me, but then proceeded to warn me in future of not restraining offenders and the police could charge me with assault.
It’s only once the media get involved and it becomes an endemic like the youth crime that they start to do something.

I agree, it is crazy these days.
