L98 or LS3 is the question.

Ok guy I search on here trying to find out how a L98 compares to a LS3 both in standard form but came up with nothing, I am sure there has to be something in here somewhere.

Well what I am trying to find out is how a L98 stacks up to the LS3 engine as I am debating which way to go for an engine transplant into my VY.

If both motors were unopened and in standard form except got a 92mm FAST T/B and 4 into 1 Pacemakers and a duel 2.5” exhaust.

I would like to think spending the extra $2000 approx for the LS1 is justified or if I was to put the $2000 into the L98 (Cam wise) would be the better option.

Hopefully I can get a few answers here.

    Cheers.

I'd be choosing the LS3 if it was my car - more potential with the greater displacement.

In stock form the LS3 has a more aggressive camshaft and higher compression ratio, larger displacement too. Get an LS3, they are going for around $7K and an L98 is around $5K, better money spent on an LS3 i think.

    LS3 cam only, a potential 350 rwkw

Re: L98 or LS3 is the question.

LS3 is around 160cc more capacity, slightly higher compression due to larger capacity, and in stock form has a better cam than L98. The heads and intake flow the same, though the intake valve in an LS3 is hollow stem and slightly lighter for an upgraded rev limit.

If you are changing cam, then from the LS3 you gain a couple percent more displacement, and slightly higher compression plus bragging rights that you have an LS3 up front!

That sounds like a great deal. Heard they had one that had a piston failure. Maybe that's it.

Same external dimensions as LS1, LS2, L76, L98. LS3. LS7 is a Gen IV SBC, and looks almost identical externally to these other GenIII/GenIV engines.

One area to work through is that it comes with a rear sump dry sump setup. Either spend a few $k fitting the engine bay out for the dry sump which wont clear the k member and needs a reasonably major rework or convert it to wet sump.

Cool Re: L98 or LS3 is the question.

    ls3 is a great engine,great hardware

But some of the claims of 350,360,370 rwkw out of these ls3 that i have been hearing about from some people are starting to get a bit old.........................

    maybe in time to come.................

Agreed .2 litres does not equate to 20% more power

just saying it in a way of the engine builders doing 402-408 engines that they must be bad at building engines.........which i don't think so/I]
