Question Yamaha YZF R1 or GSX R1000

I'm looking to buy a new sports bike and have narrowed the choice to either the R1 or GSX, looking for any opinions or advise from owners of these bikes I've read a number of reviews and they appear very close. The R1 looks great but the gsx appears to have edge in performance?

Re: Yamaha YZF R1 or GSX R1000

I haven't ridden the GSXR but have an 07 R1 which is the same as the 08. The 04-08 R1s have a shorter stroke engine and lack a little at low revs (particularly below about 5000rpm) so you need to rev them to get them to perform. Just means slightly changing your gearshift habits if you are used to a lower revving torque monster. And a tall first gear ratio doesn't help, although a -1 front sprocket fixes that. Otherwise I can't fault the R1, it is an awesome bike. Steers sharp but stable, brakes well, smooth gearbox. And nice to perve at when you are not riding it.
The gixxer has a stronger engine from the dyno graphs I have seen, but I don't think there is a real lot in it from 8000rpm upwards which is where they do the business. Personally I think they are ugly as sin, but looks are subjective so whatever floats your boat. Not sure the build quality matches the R1 but I may be wrong.
Couldn't go wrong with either, I suggest you test ride both and see which one suits your riding style the best. And when you do buy one, dial in the suspension to match your weight, it makes a big difference. There are internet forums for both bikes, maybe have a read there too. Happy riding

Asa blownvr said the r1 is lacking a little down low but has just as much everywhere else really. the gixxer since 01 ha sbeen an absollute torque monster and still is, All the other bikes can match it in power and outright speed but they all have trouble kepping the gixxr in the low to mid where it really shines compared to others, it has the same up top but that little extra down low. The real only difference would come down to which one feels the most comfortable to you, prefference on styling and $$$$.
Id go a New gsxr 1000 in all black and wack on a carbon yoshi pipe to let the screams out.

Makes me wonder what the revision for 2009 will end up like (seeing as the Jap bike makers do a major revision every 2 years)

After doing a bit more research plus a couple of test rides, am going with the R1. Undecided on colour like either Black or Blue, going to leave the bike stock for now. Yamaha dealer also told me to hold off for a couple of weeks as they are doing a Special price on the 08 R1's. $18490 ride away.

I noticed there are a couple of Perth dealers advertising them for $17290 + orc. Can't remember how much orc are, I paid $18k ride away for mine a year ago. I think it was about the end of April they dropped $1k off the price with some factory bonus, maybe they do it every year. Have not looked into prices in recent times but I would be surprised if you couldn't get them down to 18 flat or less. The runout 07 stock was advertised for $17k if I remember correctly.

I could probably squeeze them down a bit more. The 09 model due for release August. I've seen a "supposed" picture of it on another website. Looks quite good very similar to R6 or MV Augusta. So they maybe trying to runout the 08 models.

did you test ride a gixxer as well?I have an 06 1000 and it is a awesome bit of gear.Heaps of torque and screams up top as well as handle like a 600,although an r1 would be my second choice and all the 1000s are pretty awesome anyway

Ride both for more than 50km, I have ridden both and the Gixxer gets my vote, however the best person to make the choice is you.

I'm definitely going for the R1 the gixxer is a nice bit of kit and even looked at the Hayabusa "very nice", I just found the R1 a bit more rider friendly. hard to explain just personal preference. Now just have to make up my mind to either get 08 or 09 model.
