    New toy...need advise.

    Hi all.

I need some mid life crisis advice.

I have always thought one day I will have some huge thumper in the garage to take out on weekends, will turn the tyres at will and generally will satisfy my rev head urges. I have looked at Cobras replicas, 57 chevs, corvettes etc, but I cant justify spending upwards of $60k for something decent. Lately I have toyed with the idea of turning my current ride (and work hack) (VE SSV Wagon ) into such beast. I am thinking, for about $20K I could cam/supercharge my daily and turn into a semi daily/weekend beast. I could use the missus vehicle for work when required for big kms, and yet I would have a beast with the mod cons of air con, power steer and general comfort motoring.

For the record, my previous ride was a tuned VY tuned A4 clubby that hardly turned the tyres. I want a beast. (or close to it).

    Any advise welcomed..

    Cheers

Hi mate, if you can afford it, then do it. Just beware of the very common problem of " I'll be happy with just xxxrwhp" it's never enough for some people , myself included haha.
But seriously , talking from experience , I can't describe how much joy having fast cars brings me, from track days to powercruise events etc . If it's what you've always wanted then go and talk to a reputable shop ( forum sponsors good place to start) whether you only spend 20k or 120 k you'll always regret what u didn't do more than what u did!
    Here's my last toy

I've just sent a VF2 redline ute in for a twin turbo set up at HPF.
You need to consider things like will your car handle that power? What upgrades u may need etc.
Shop around, ask questions, do some research, go for drive in a quick car? I highly recommend it!
    Cheers Greg

    Cam and supercharger.
The right combo will turn the tyres with ease and be no less streetable (or reliable) than it is now.

when i decide to go back down the tyre turning moster weekender route, it will be something old school. Personally i would do it with something you dont see 10 times a day (like you do with a modern commodore/falcon) etc. Ill be doing the big block chev in a HQ for example. It wont owe you $60k+ like a 57 chev or Vette etc. different strokes for different folks though.

Sled beside the thumping go gear, there will be a brake upgrade, possible wheel upgrade (depending what Brakes you select) suspension upgrade, A6 strengthening & tuning, Diff gears & possible tailshaft & axle upgrades as well. Good luck with it!

Agree with A PSYCHO, as a weekender you want it to be something special. Doing up a current model commodore will become the VS/VT of tomorrow. It just won't feel that special and you will most likely feel like you're going to the local McDonalds street meet every time you drive it.

When I had my clubby, although it was the quicker car I always envied my mates with the XB hardtop and the XB Farimont. Those cars felt special.

Personally, I admit I haven't been browsing car sales as much now that I'm with child, wife and mortgage, but pre 1980's Pontiac Firebirds with big blocks were going for very reasonable money. 60's vintage would be my pick but there doesn't seem to be any for sale at the moment.

Or I'd go a classic porsche/maserati/ferrari something exotic.

If you want thrills, get a bike.

    +... 100%
guess I am spoiled with a ZX12R, GEN-F R8 and an early Commodore touring race car in the garage
The bike standard is quicker than either car .. with a 10sec 1/4 time and + 300kmh top speed (AMCN got 321 at Avalon from one)

I should be buying a mates '07 FZ1N in a few months when hes ready to let it go, and even that thing scares me. Cant imagine riding quicker bikes like the ZX12R, S1000 RR, Kawasaki H2R etc.

I have gone down the motorcycle toy path since selling the clubby. It's hard to explain how rewarding it is to ride a motorcycle well. And then there's the feeling of going full noise on a bike with the noise of the engine and the air rushing past your head with the horizon coming up quick and your brain trying to process Wtf is going on! You don't even need something that quick to get that feeling.

Oh and bikes are a faaaaaarrrrkkkk load cheaper to play with.

True that, and you don't even have to be going fast. Mate dropped his Harley in the wet negotiating a roundabout, snapped a finger and farked his shoulder, 12 months and an operation later he is still suffering.
