January Motor Mag: HSV Breaks 5 Second Barrier

a pretty good read, mainly because of the VZ R8 vs MK2 GTP comparo they seem to love the r8 and ls2 of more notable interest is the the sub artical within the r8/gtp comparo.

    "HSV BREAKS FIVE SECOND BARRIER"
As you can see from our photoshoot, the gods where not kind with Melbourne weather, hence our slightly slower than expected acceleration times in the clubsport -the first manual gen4 powered car we've run on the correvit. But on a hot day in Sydney, an auto GTO coupe simply shattered what we thought was possible from an Aussie-built muscle car. Admittedly after more launches and fiddling with technique, The GTO stormed to 100km/h in 4.99 seconds, breaking the five-second barrier and beating our previous best (in an HSV GTS) 0-100k/h in 5.24 . The numbers kept tumbling all the way to the 400m mark where the HSV stopped the timing gear at 13.09 seconds with a terminal speed of 179.4 km/h. In an auto! These numbers are not out of place in the pantheon of supercars, and with more time and some adjustment to tire pressures, we reckon the big coupe might even sneak into the 12 second bracket.

    0-400m 13.09@179.4km/h
wow! thats bloddy quick stcok from the showroom floor! and to think these gen4's are detuned.

Could it run 11s if it were edited? (Assuming with no other mods)

it would be hard to say right now as there is no ls2 edit available at the moment, but i think it would be very possible. The ls2 in the HSVs is very detuned, it even runs standard cast headers... and the exhaust in places looks pretty squashed. interesting times await

Engine could do it easily imo but I think the suspension will stop it from getting in to the 12s on street tyres with any consistancy. Roll on VE and I think we will see some great times!

    holy monkey piss batman.

    thats awesome...
for once a car has lived upto the anticipation.....

everyone will admit they quietly expected the LS2 to run 5 flat and 13 flat...

    and what a glorious sound,

Yeh, your right, I thought I read somewhere in Motor they had gone back to the 3.07 but it's definately the 3.46. Well I'd still put the 3.9 in and some fatter rubber on the rear.
