heya dude,
Like we all said the other night. You should be pretty good with a VY. Though I'd prob look at series 2. I think the ls6 pcv came on that series - though no biggy if it doesn't have it - just put a catch can on it.
Can't think of any other stuff besides usual wear and tear. Bushes fr/rear, strut top mounts. Just try and find one that's been looked after I say.
cheers,
Gav
Hi Guys,
Yes the VY Series II also had the strut brace didn't it? Maybe not a real big deal.
How well sorted were the VY's from an oil use perspective? Was the VY SII any better than the VYSI? That would influence my decision. Unless of course a VYSII was a bit cheaper. And if it was, I'd put the $ saved towards an engine freshen up in the event of oil use problems down the track.
I like the look of some of the COME RACING stroker engines. 408 cubes sounds nice. As I say, I considered keeping my VYSI SV8 and fitting one of these.
I've heard it said that oil use problems were very well sorted in the 6L engine. True? If so, I'd be looking for a VZ 6L. A tad newer and maybe a tad better sorted in a couple of areas.

I have a VY II SS and have no problem with it at all except for it popping out of reverse occassionally. I have done 70,000km in the last 18 months and it now sits with 160,000km and i havnt had to do anything to it yet (touch wood) I think they had ironed out most of the bugs by the time VY II was released.
The Vy is also a lot nicer to drive than erlier models.

My VY has no issues at all. It's a simple but well sorted car, and it just goes every time I turn the key.

if you want the vy shape def look for a series 2, nicer interior (all black) plus get one with the leather / climate pack which was not available on s1 (only leather).
most will not have issues by now if they have been well looked after and maintained. find a clean example and away you go. also budget some coin for suspension overhaul because it will all be shagged by now haha

You will find with all VT-VZ once they get to 80,000km+ all the bushes probably need replacing if you get a fully legit RWC done. Speak to Chev re this.

Had my VYSS for 5yrs now no major probs at all only thing I've had to replace were the strut tops, bushes, ignition barrel and oil pressure sensor..
The only thing I'm not happy with is how my seats have worn on the bolsters..

more likely due to the way you enter and exit that car than the cars design itself.

I dont have an issue with my bolsters and the car has done 160,000km. Im 182cm and about 75K so fairly slim which means i dont put pressure on the bolsters when getting in and out. My dad however is 180cm and about 115kg and being a big boy he seems to put a lot more pressure on the bolsters when getting in and out and wears them out quicker
While i hop into the seat he slides across

yeh personally SII with the leather/climate option (if possible)
my mate had one (with 200kms on the clock) for HEEEAAAPPSS cheap.
the leather was faily decent n im pretty sure all he did was respray the front bar and the wheels (to tidy it up)..
and then the basic clean on it.
Unless you really love the look of a VZ, i wouldnt bother unless going for a 6.0L
the six-ohh is really worth it.
*also open your search options for Clubbys if thats your taste (and your budget)
how much extra should you pay for a clubby over an SS, i dont know.. im sure someone on here would know.
clubby.. leather seats big brakes etc etc

Has nothing to do with how i get out as I dont lean on the bolsters getting out due to my bad knees and ankles i get out of the car alot different to other people..

+1 for series 2,
have a play with it during a test drive, check for excessive driveline backlash, have a good feel of the clutch, make sure it changes nicely into second and doesnt gring at all.
apart from that, check for the usual oil leaks, front bushes and service history
Yep go the series II. I had a VYII SS and did 110k before I traded it. It was a great car.
As has already been pointed out by others, only major dramas were the front suspension (bushes and link pins needed replacing at 70k mark) and the clutch went at 90k - all under warranty so no dramas.
Also, for what its worth, the brake pads (and rotors) were never replaced and were rock solid...go figure??
