The old girl has clocked up 200.000km. Mainly freeway ks and hasnt really missed a beat..still going strong.
If I go a Cam route now, will me engine need freshening up somehow, or should I just throw a stick, valve springs in it and off I go?
If it needs a freshening, what does that normally involve?
Cheers..

As has been said before its hard to say wether it will need a freshen up or not as it depends on how well it was serviced and how often etc. Best bet would be to get a decent work shop to check the engine out for you first before you either freshen it up or just do the cam upgrade.

Yeah, it should be fine, plenty of others have done it and are driving around with more kms than that! :)

Happy to send up my compression tester if you were curious as to how toight the engine is.
I think shops charge about $120 to compression test the engine. Might be easier to have it done by a pro.
It'd give you some peace of mind (or confirm the need to have a tear down)

I would be pretty confident about the engine if it was just highway use, though if you are making a cam change, might as well go the whole hog, heads, lifters, pushies, springs, manifold, injectors, OTR, new seals, the parts are damn cheap and back on the road with 300rwkw or more, you wont regret it

Like you my Monaro did mostly highway ks. At 250,000km my lifters were noisy and I had a few gasket leaks so decided that to do the lifters and gaskets I might as well get a cam. So I went to PowerTorque and got the gaskets done, lifters and a 222/224 cam and the edit redone. All good.
At 317,000 km my oil pump died so I replaced that with a hi-volume oil pump and the O-ring for the oil pickup tube. It was noticed that the factory timing change was stretched so we replaced it with a twin row timing chain. After this experience, I would recommend that if you are putting in a lumpy-ish cam into a high milage LS then fit a twin row timing chain from the get go.
The bores and pistons for my motor were good at 250,000kms and the bottom end bearings were all good at 317,000kms so I wouldn't get too worked up about rebuilding the whole motor the guts of an LS1 is pretty good, its just some smaller things that can give a little trouble.
My personal opinion on what you should do is the following:
Typical things that go wrong with a 200,000km-300,000km LS motor are the following from reading various threads on LS1.com.au:
1) Noisy lifters.
2) Oil pick up tube o-ring in sump goes hard and can block pick up tube.
3) Oil Pump Relief Valve sticks. Oil Pressure light comes on.
4) Gaskets leak (rear main seal and sump gasket are most notorious).
To fix the lifters it means heads off so you will get new head gaskets and the opportunity to inspect the bores and pistons to see if all OK. You may as well fit 918 valve springs at the same time.
To fix the oil pump and O ring means taking the sump off so you will get new bottom end gaskets. Sump off means you can inspect the bottom end bearings/crank to see if all OK.
Doing the cam will mean you can fit a twin row timing chain for little extra labour and it will save you a job down the track. (and a under drive pulley too if you want - I haven't done this, don't know much about them, read up or search threads)
Get a sponser to confim but I think you will find that if they do a cam they will probably pull the engine out so doing bottom end gaskets and the oil pump and O-ring won't involve much extra labour.
Having done a cam you may as well do the 2 hole mod or put on an OTR-CAI as you will need an "Edit" due to the cam.
Cheers, Matthew
