In the SS's some colours were dropped and new ones introduced. Hothouse out Cosmo and Silver introduced. The lower two bars on the front panel where reversed that is the top panel is now "Textured" plastic and lower painted. Seriese 1 was the top bar painted and the lower plastic.
Climate control was standard with leather trim. 18in rims standard on SS utes. Power was uprated to 260kw. SS and Holden badges were chrome finish for series 2. Series 1 was satin finish. Black hood lining was now available. Interior lights changed.

I know there is more but cant remember them all.

Cant agree with you on 18 inch standard rims for the ss utes.
Rear tailights on the utes changed though

VYI - 235kW, 17" Rims, Grey coloured rear tail lamp indicators
VYII - 245kW, 17" Rims, Clear coloured rear tail lamp indicators

Nor the 260kw comment. Try 245kw. Even the VZ only has 250.

18 inch whels came as standard on all ss models
lighting and sunglass holder update.
245kw as opposed to 235kw ( yeah right kw claims accurate my :booty: )
can;t think of anymore

17" on the SS Utes, 18" on the SS sedans!

Cruise Control standard on all VY series 2. SS Crewmans have 17" wheels standard.

Power went to 245 from 235 I thought.

I wonder what the changes will be from VZ to VZII as they already have std climate and 18" wheels dont they?

OakenShield

no, Climate with Leather only. Not standard. would imaging the SS's going the 260Kw "LS1 Plus" the monaro currently has in the series 2, then LS2 in the VE.

I believe power went from 235 to 245 VYI to VYII then up to 250 for the VZ

VY2 had the cats located closer to the exhaust manifold.

VY II added strut brace, black roof lining, leather & satin gear shift.

VYII gained new interior trims as well, plus rear map reading lights, front power windows std in exec, SV8. Most models except SS got new wheel design, with the Calais ones being particularly horn.

Stand corrected on the 18's. New one of them got them as standard. Also on the KW.

Climate control came with leather. Didnt mean they were actually standard but hey. We get the drift

Steering wheel on VYII SS is countoured at the 10 to 2 positions. VYI is uniform diameter all the way round.
A cup holder in the dash adjacent to the radio in VYII.
Different dash (speedo - tacho area) colours I believe.

black roof lining

Is that standard on all models VY2 onwards? Saw it at the Motor show, it looks bloody shocking IMO.

VYII has Monaro CAI airbox shroud
VYI&II have identical airboxes & CAI'S - which are the same as the 'Monaro' CAI & airbox

Leather steering wheels are different too, series 1 has a straight rim, series 2 has the thumb grips at around the 10 to 2 position as per the VX SS.

There was also different pistons fitted from around June 03, so all the VYII's have the later design pistons and Series 1 from around June 03.

Sure about that?
I've seen a few VY1 SSs (my mate has one), and none of them had the Monaro CAI shroud. Just the big hole leading into the airbox, exposed to the engine bay.

Berlina had foglights in SII
Calais had a new bodykit and FE 1.5 Suspension in SII

My VYI SV8 had a plastic shroud from the airbox to the headlight when I bought it brand new.

my series I SS ute had the same airbox as my series II SS sedan has now. The sII Calais gained a new front fascia, extension and an insert to the rear fascia, slightly different taillight, 235kw v8 where berline and s ute kept the 225kw v8. ssI went from bridgestone B530 to RE 040 tyres. Execs picked up gay looking front indicator lamps (clear sI to amber sII :p ). S pack got 17 inch wheels. S pack and sv8 picked up the now defunct monaro cv6 instruments. just off the top of my head :D

Unless the vehicle was optined with HBD wheels (as mine was) then you only get a steel spare.

Sorry - I may be wrong. I was just going by the VY SMI CD where it clearly shows the VYI doesn't have the mcai. Maybe they started changing them over before the VYII??

Is it true to say the VYII's have the LS6 block, or did that occur at another epoch?

Thanks people... :)

We are looking at getting a VY hopefully Series II SS. Is the power increase definate? That's probably the most important thing  . The rest of the changes are cosmetic? We used to own a VX series I SS and I remember one of the changes to a series II was a suspension link. Are there any suspension changes with the Series II VY??

What did Holden do for that extra 10kW??

the mooch
29-10-2004, 09:13 PM
they changed a 3 to a 4 in the brochures and press releases
Honestly, if you could pick the difference you should be splitting atoms......
I dare say the difference to VZ will be more noticeable due the addition of ETC. Apart from the tyre model change Holden never officially altered the suspension between SI and SII. I say officially because specs 'may change without notice!!'

I've got a VY1 SS Ute, my old man has a VY2 SS ute; differences we've noticed:

- Tyres Changed from B530's to RE8030's.
- Tailights.
- VY2 has Black Roof Lining.
- VY2 Has 'Monaro/HSV' Park Brake and Gear Knob - Satin Chrome with leather and colored stiching.
- VY2 SS Has VY1 HSV Steering Wheel, not just the 10 and 2 positions were modified, but the entire outer rim is bigger and more comfortable.
- Illuminated Steering wheel stereo controls.
- Trim Color inside (eg, doors, dash, stereo face, etc.) Seems to be slightly lighter in VY2, more of a dark grey rather then the pure black in my VY1.
- 10Kw difference (235 v 245)
- Strut bar
- Seats were revised, much more supportive.

Thats all I can think of, other than the color change, from hothouse to cosmo and the addition of silver.

Then some unscrupulous person knocked it off before your mate got the car.
Mine is the 1st or 2nd month VYI & the Monaro/VY CAI was in place.

You are correct, mine is a september 2002 build VY series 1 and the airbox is the same as the monaro it replaced.

Wrong. The VY series 1 got 5, yes count them, 5 alloy rims. well, the SS did anyway.
The series 2 got the steely as a spare.

The lower two bars on the front panel where reversed that is the top panel is now "Textured" plastic and lower painted. Seriese 1 was the top bar painted and the lower plastic.

even better, paint both bars to match and confuse the hell out of series 1/2 spotters..looks better as well.

Must be a lot of unscrupulous dealers out there (duhhh... ;)). Every dealership VY SS we looked at was the same.

(My mate also got a steel spare. Geez, I wonder what else the dealership flogged. )

VYII/SIII Monaro got the LS6 block/2nd redesign pistons and intake plenum, (plus larger throttle body?) plus O2 sensors repositioned near cats.

I would look for a VYII because this seems to be when they finally fixed LS1-itis.

Fix was in April 2003, still have an article about this somewhere... Don't think it matters, mine is an April 03 and it is still as good as it was when it was new.
Can't remember if climate control was an option on VY1 SS Ute... traction control wasn't available on the VY1 SS ute at the time either

These are the details given to me back in 2003 direct from Holden (Not the dealers), mine was being rebuilt at the time with the VYII pistons and I asked Holden when were the new pistons being fitted as a production run change as I was at the time thinking of updating. The details given to me from Head Office at the time were:

First Engine to have the then new set up was VF030982395

Fitted to vehicles from VIN No: L129096 (the VIN numbers went back to a lower number in '03 they were up around L9XXXXXXX)

The build date I was given was from 3/06/03 onwards.

So some of the '03 VY 1's would have the VYII set up.

Hope this helps.
