I know there are a quite a few threads floating around in regards to this topic. I have read a few different things whilst doing some research and found a few oils and would like to know if anyone has used them? What are there thoughts on them? Did they actually cause harmor damage the gearbox? Were they any better then the dextron?
A few ppl on the yank sites have been using them and I thought maybe some here had tried them.

GM Syncromesh
Amsoil (There is two types I beleive)
Mobil One ATF
Pensoil ATF
Royal Purple Syncomax ( I have read a few ppl using it on here)

Cheers

I recently got Marranos to change my gearbox oil (since I had the original Dexron stuff in for the last 55,000 kms) & they put in Transmax Z and I'm pretty happy.

I have currently got the transmax in there. Cars done around 50k on that oil. So i thought I would try something else. The yanks rave about the Amsoil stuff and mobil. I was hoping that maybe some of the forum members had tried some of the laternate oils or know if they are any good or not. I am aware the majority use transmax or mainlube stuff.

I've had DexronIII in my VY SS for 60K k's so far and am considering doing the same. Have heard from a mate who tried RP and the problems that prompted a change in oil were still there. Eg: lazy 1st & 2nd gear synchros when cold, excessively noisy bearings and a reluctance to go in to 1st gear at lights intermittently. I guess the fact that the T56 is a very agricultural piece of equipment has something to do with it but there must be a suitable oil out there that can make it a bit more user friendly. Would love to hear about some tried and proven products. Btw, you gotta love that cosmo colour ;)

The colour is great, a bit of a pita to keep clean though. The mainlube and transmax z gets lots of praise here and in the majority of cases has improved shift quality and noise level. If you are still running the stock stuff, give one of them a go.
I have had both the transmax and mainlube. I took the mainlube out after 4 weeks because it was fairly hard to get into 2nd when cold and was worried that I may be doing damage as most ppl were saying that gear oil is a no no with these boxes. If i had my time again i would have left the mainlube in as I have never heard of anyone having trouble with it. The trans max has been ok and its due for a change. Starting to get a bit of noise back again. I was hoping that others may have tried some of the other oils and could provide some feedback.
I will probably chuck the royal purple in this time.

Yes but how good does it look when it is clean :) Let me know how the RP goes as it's not cheap and I'd rather spend the money on something I won't be draining out again in a month ! Good luck

I changed the formulation of Mainlube 154 Synthetic Solid Boundary E P Gear Oil SAE 75w90 now to a slightly thinner viscosity, this alleviates the cold changei ssue.

Yes Mainlube is one of only a couple of E P gear oils in the world that has a passive E P package that's friendly to yellow metals and luckily the bonding glue of the carbon syncros of the T56 gearbox. The syncros fall off with most ep gear oil's chemistry, that's why GM say use an ATF, no chemical EP.

We are now looking at a rare earth magnet for the sump bung of the T56 in conjunction with the Mainlube 154 as slight amount of metal particles from rough change can contaminate the product enough for a change (none from general wear and tear as with other oils) The magnet would remove any particles being carried by the oil flow through load bearing areas damaging the box, this would extend the life of Mainlube 154 dramatically as the oil has an extreme life.

These magnets could be fitted to T56's that already have Mainlube 154 in and extend its life there as well.

There is no argument about Mainlube being far superior to Transmax Z in the T56, Filtergrams have proven this many times over, Transmax is zinc additive technology (engine and hydraulic oil) where Mainlube is an E P Gear Oil made for a gearbox.
There are Filtergrams showing this on the Mainlube Forum in the noisy gearbox threads.

Costing and flushing procedures are on the Mainlube forum.

(now I'm going to have to bloody make the drain bungs now aren't I)

Cheers

Steve

Anyone used the Penrite Manual Gear oil 70 in there T56.
Being as it is a gear oil specifically made for gearboxes that take a ATF oil and being synthetic is should be (technically) better that transmax.

Thats strange 75 is a lot thicker than the 70 but it might be right, but when u read the pdf file of 70 it states is recommended for all holden and ford t56 boxes in six speed.

I E-mailed them about the ve ssv ute and the response was,

Dear Dean,

Our recommendations for your manual transmission is Manual Gear Oil 70 (SAE 70W-75) and for the differential SIN Gear Oil 80 (SAE 80W-140).

Just for your information, we do not recommend additional additives to SIN Gear Oil 80, as any additives required have already been added to the formulation.

All the best,

I've already bought the transmax z to put in mine, i just couldn't get a hold of the penrite.

I used the penrite for around 7000 ks. Very noisy when cold also hard to change gears. When it started to make Syncro noise on down shifts i changed to Transmax z 100% improvement.
