What else is in your garage?

Inspired by the VW reliability thread where it emerged that several LS1 members have old school VW Beetles - what non-Holden or non-LSx stuff does everyone has that might be interesting?

This is what occupies the other side of the garage to the SS - 1971 Super Beetle:

Bought a couple of months ago as a bit of a hobby/projeect/learning exercise. I've since done a bit of rust repair and repaint work on the undercarriage and otherwise generally have been tidying it up; will get it on to historic rego later this week. (My heart really wanted an older Holden but it was hard to find one for a few grand that wasn't undesirable or a basketcase; on the other hand these are cheap, easy, and common enough to have no trouble finding parts).

    So....what have you guys got?

My non Holden / non LSx vehicle is not all that interesting. Its a 1984 Mazda B2200 diesel trayback ute. Did a restoration on it back in 2010. Just sits in the shed because Ive got too many other registered cars to put rego on it.

Non LSx Holdens I have are -

    1999 Rodeo V6 4x2 trayback

1987 VL Turbo 5 speed - Was a standard SL Non turbo, Converted to turbo with all factory drivline from donor car, In the process of converting to a Calais.

    1987 VL Berlina 6 cyl
    1987 VL Executive 6 cyl
1985 VK Berlina injected black 202 - did full resto on this and has full VK Calais interior and electrics

Re: What else is in your garage?

I've got a 71 Beetle (as mentioned in the other thread). It's not all that flash but it does the job with about half the fuel consumption of the SS lol. It's got rust in the usual areas but I'll get around to that one day. I've finally sorted the cold weather problems, it was getting intake ice which was causing rough running but a bit of playing around with heater tubes fixed that up. I've also installed H4 headlights along with new wiring and the installation of relays for it. On the cards is lowering (it's on the clouds) and eventually lower profile tyres, probably drop down to 60 profile lol. There's also the WRX motor conversion one day...

Also, did you other Beetle owners name them? It's tradition after all. The previous owners named mine Molly so that stuck. My family's first Beetle was called Myrtle

Yeah? My Dad worked on the development of those back in the day, on emissions testing and seat belts amongst other things. He still has a soft spot for them even though he's never owned one.

Mine is Olivia, like yours named by the previous owner. Where is your rusting? I've got some heater channel rot unfortunately which I didn't realise the extent of when I bought it, but it'll be fine for the year or two I think I'll keep it for. Mine uses quite a bit of fuel though which makes me think it might need some attention, if you're saying yours is economical!

Well I wouldn't call it economical on it's own, but it definitely is compared to the SS. I get about 11L/100km in the city which is about the norm for them. The main rust of concern is either side of the intake grill below the rear window. Bit of a pain but pretty straightforward to fix on the scheme of things. I think that heater channel rust is a real pain to fix isn't it? Involves a fair bit of oxy/grinding work from memory. There's also a little bit in the lower section of the passenger door but all the drainage holes were blocked, so I vacuumed all the crud out and got some rust converter in there to at least slow the damage.

There are some awesome vids on Youtube regarding general repairs/tuning/etc of these cars. Mine was feeling a bit sluggish tonight, I think it needs retuning for the cold weather.

Yeah, it's painful to fix which is why I've decided I won't be doing it. You can get patch panels if you don't want to replace the whole thing but for now I've gotten rid of as much as I can, rust converted it and used a little bit of filler. I wouldn't call it fixed but it should slow it down at least.

Re: What else is in your garage?

Apart from dirt and a second fridge etc....

In the garage and carport are:

05 diesel manual Rodeo 4wd with some bits to make it nicer in the bush (in the exit row waiting for a new home as soon as I get my finger out and advertise it)
07 diesel manual Rodeo 4wd with some bits to make it nicer in the bush (replacement of the one above, this one has ABS and airbags)
12 diesel manual Cruze (theoretically mine at the moment but will be #1 sons when he pays me back)
13 diesel auto Prado with some bits to make it nicer in the bush (just finished stage 1 of mods, stage 2 to come...)
07 Davinci, 09 Cannondale, 11 Giant, 12 Yeti (all mountain bikes) and 07 Norco is on long term loan to a friend
10 Rosco TK1, 11 Rosco Tidemark XP and 12 Rosco Tidemark XP

And if I count the shed there is a diesel hydrostatic Kubota tractor in there

Bit of a theme about the fuel of choice...
