    Re: The WonkyUte (SSV)

Thanks Adam. After a couple of weeks of driving it with the 3.45 diff, even with rarely giving it its head, I can say that it's definitely a lot punchier. With the same amount of accelerator as before it pulls out of corners a lot easier.

My petrol consumption is up a fair bit at the moment but not sure if that's because I am using Mobil Synergy 8000 for the first time ever instead of Ultimate at the moment or not. Will have to go back on to BP before being able to say for sure, but initially with the BP I didn't really notice any big difference in consumption, so I'm guessing the Mobil is a factor.

    Re: The WonkyUte (SSV)

Thanks to the stainless steel welding skills of Cam (AMADSS) the original tongue and slot hinges have now been changed to normal barrel type hinge arrangements and Big Rob at Chev's was able to change the control unit operation so that one press on the remote sets the lid in motion and one press sets the tailgate in motion. We didn't want that while the original hinges which came with the hardlid were on there as the very first time we tried it the tongue came right out of the slot!! Not nice.............

Now I can set the lid going up and tailgate going down even before I've stopped and of course can set off again while they're still closing if I really want to! No doubt that would get some strange looks!!

worknssv reckons they're so good that he has just ordered a set for his ute too! I expect to eventually see lots of utes with them!

Thanks GJ! Yep, the actuators make it easy for me now. Just got to design some sort of slide out and drop down (over the end of the tailgate) box for my walker now and that end of things is all done. Then a cam (probably just LS3) for the motor and I reckon that will do me! (Famous last words! )

If you had an alloy box made up and connected it to the tailgate, the tailgate actuators would pull it back / forward for you. You would just have to think about the lowering / raising. Maybe something along the lines of those cheap electric boat winches. Food for thought

Go for a 224/228 cam, you won't look back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 316rwkw for me in an A6 proves it

I'm with Aussietone... make some brackets / clips to hold say the handle end of the walker and the wheels at the other end could guide it into the tray as it's pushed in by the gate closing

After watching the 2 clips of the tailgate and hard lid opening/closing, have you considered what could happen in the event of a car driving past, just like in the car park that the video was taken in, and scraping or crashing into it. When you're driving through a car park, the last thing you're expecting is a tail gate to start opening on its own, with seemingly no one standing next to it. A car is more likely to be seen driving out of a park, but not a tailgate tilting back. It may be very convenient, but unless you're there standing next to it, it might not be very visible to cars going past. Some car parks are very narrow.
    It looks freaky though.
Also, is it possible for the button that activates the opening process to be accidently pressed and it start opening. At a high speed it could get ugly, especially with all of that down force.

Good point Tony, then I need only worry about having it somehow slide out over the tailgate and drop down in a controlled manner so that it ended up with the box almost vertical and the bottom on the ground, whilst the top was still somehow connected to the tailgate. That way I could easily just pull the walker forwards out of the almost vertical box so it unfolded itself and was ready to go. At the moment the part that leaves me in most danger of just toppling over is when I try to lift it out of the tray or back in again. That's why having the box slide out over the end of the tailgate is what I'm looking to do, but the back half of the box must still be somehow fixed/located on the end of the tailgate to keep it steady for me.

Thanks Mick. I know people picked up in the low 20s kw and a heap of torque with LS2 cams on L98s and the LS3 cam is a little better (identical but higher lift on inlet valves from memory).

Yep, in some ways I'd love a 224/228 or even 220/220 but with my disabilities I don't want to push my luck too far and end up with more power than I can safely handle, so an LS3 cam sounds like a good compromise. Also means no need to do springs/rods or lifters too, so quicker and cheaper.

Understand where you’re coming from but I wouldn't do that unless I was somewhere familiar where I knew it was safe to do. In fact, it takes me so long to get out of the car and to the back that there’s plenty of time for me to pull up and only set it going once I’m parked, yet still be open fully by the time I get back there. Remember also that 99% of the time at shops etc. I use disabled car parks which are generally much bigger and where people also expect things like hydraulic tailgates or ramps for people in wheelchairs.

Not really possible to accidentally press a button while driving along. The remote is on my key ring but it’s on its own separate swivel link and the only way to be able to press any button firmly enough to work is to hold the remote steady while you press the button. Absolutely not possible to accidentally make anything operate.

    Hi John,

They're still sitting behind my passenger seat while I try to decide whether to put them on or not because doing so would really mean removing my painted engine covers so they could be seen.

    Cheers,
    Gary

On a bolt-on car like mine I suspect nothing much except bling. I gather they are really for more heavily modified and FI cars.
