buying a new car made painful

Today i took my gf down to the local VW dealer to check out the new tiguan. As i'm sure most of you do i had done some research of model levels and options etc but wanted to go see one in the flesh.
Once we got there it felt like we were looking at other peoples cars that weren't for sale, at least 30% of the cars in the showroom were locked and the ones that were open if there wasalready a salesman showing someone the car felt like we couldn't look or listen in to what was being explained?
What made the experience more painful was when we finally got a sales guy to talk us through the car i knew more about it then he did!

I'd like to know is this a common occurrence?
    I think it's not asking too much for the salesman to;
    1) know the details of the car well (at least more than the customer)
    2) make some effort to build a relationship with the customer
    3) listen to what i have to say then try and offer me the most suitable car/model that they sell
    4) make some effort to actually sell the car!!

I know im young but 43,000 for the top spec tigaun isn't crazy money. Whats more amusing and a bit crazy too is that my gf comes from china and her family back home are quite wealthy so at the time we were looking at thiscar the handbag she was carrying was worth more thanthe car! Lol maybe the salesman should have picked up on that ?

Chick I know has a Tiguan and I convinced her to tune it. Went from 125 FWKW to 189FRKW and 400NM... They park themselves too, which is a handy feature for the females...

Re: buying a new car made painful

I recently brought 2 VWs for works, I done my research before I went to a dealer, then went to the nearest and test drove the cars to confirm they were what we wanted, got a price from that dealer and then rang the rest of the dealers up to get a comparison price. But your right many of the sales people in the dealership over phone or in person could not answer my question off the top of their head.

Not all car salesmen are car enthusiasts, like normal people there's a high number of them who could give a stuff providing the pay cheque clears. When I was last looking I had a sales guy tell me the VE had a 4 speed auto, I made him check it and low and behold, he even went on to say he'd been selling them for 2 years telling people that. Another try and tell me the VZ SV6 paddle shift was like driving an F1 car.... Was at a Mitsubishi dealer, looking at an outlander VRX, no one would come near me so I sat there and turned the radio on - inside the show room - 45 minutes later I was asked if I needed anything (yes, I had time to spare), I said nope and walked away. I lost count how many times I opened and closed the sunroof...

I don't think you are asking too much.
When I buy anything I do my research and I think all four of the new cars that i have bought in the last 10 years, when i approached the dealer, i should have been the one selling the cars.
I went into Holden just last week to check out an SV6 Sportwagon, and the sales lady was telling me how they have cylinder de-activation just like my SSV

From things I've heard/read VW dealers are some of the worst around and most likely will budge very little on price as the stock they can get hold of virtually sells itself.

Re: buying a new car made painful

Haha love it when you know more than the salesman and they have to get the broucher to check the details again!! My old man worked as a salesman for BMW for a little while and he always made sure he researched all the cars and options available for the cars as he said from personal experiences there was nothing more frustrating than a salesman not knowing his product. In doing this he became one of the highests sales saleman in country aust. He said you would see his other team members stumbling and rechecking brouchers constantly which he thought just looked unprofessional.

My other pet hate is when your only young and walk into the dealership and are looking at a new car they just seem to ignore you, as if there thinking you cant afford it not even knowing what u do or how much u have!!

    Cheers Maccas
