I'll try to answer as accurately as I can for you.

SV6 = gay with sh1t resale and sounds crap with v8 wannabe sports exhaust
SS or SSV = cool kid on the block with good resale and sounds good

Hope that helps clear things up for you.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Alright I think I am going to go for the SS...

Paying so much for the SV6 already Itll probably take just a couple of months before the SS regret would kick in!! Also, buying a new commodore I don't want to get bored and sell it for quite some time, I would imagine there is much greater chance of boredom with the SV6.

Anyway I have not driven one yet, only the SV6 manual. I am guessing the T56 is quite a bit more agricultural than the Aisin unit in the SV6. I'll go test drive it this weekend.

I already have a contract written up for an SV6 that I was going to sign, if I could just get some ideas of what I should be paying on top for the SS that would be great. The RRP difference is 5k I believe, is that going to be the exact price different I should aim for?

you should always aim to knock them down a bit mate and when they wont budge any more with the price start asking for extras on the car

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Its pointless IMO to try and say you'll save money, long term by buying a V8. You just won't.
Extra petrol costs, insurance costs, service costs etc are all not going to help. Don't forget the urge to modify it too. It will all add up.

The only real good reason to buy a V8 is because you want it and can afford one, don't try and convince yourself its cheaper in the long run, it aint!!

Good luck with your choice, whichever way you go.

    My 2c.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Would have to agree, the SS WILL cost you more than the SV6 but I believe it is a cost and is negligible as the cost difference between the two is soon forgotten when driving the vehicle. A SS just has buckets of power and is a caged lion ( with mods they are even better).
I drive an SV6 as a daily and I have to say it is woeful in performance and uses eff all difference in fuel compared to my brother who also has a VE but has an SS.
Get the V8, you won't regret it, but as people have said, if your trying to save money then don't get a commodore but rather a 4cyl or LPI/LPG.

6-12 month old SS beats new sv6 any day of the week.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Ive just been going through similar decision; and although i do drive a ve senator, i need a ute for house reno and was thinking a sv6 thunder ute would be nice; quite cheap and well equipped. They only had an ss thunder in stock so i took it for a drive and was very impressed. upon getting back to the dealer they had found a sv6 ute to drive so i jumped in. got half way around the block and bought it back. spend the money on the ss. sv6 i found harsh, sounded like the old ecotec (that was surprising; not cultured at all!), way less grunt. Granted im used to a v8, but the v6 was just so lacking compared to the ss.

Not much of a contest is it? I'd say SS over the sv6 every day of the week.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

I'd be trying to buy the newest second hand and modded VE SS/SSV your budget allows bearing in mind all the costs associated (fuel, rego, insurance, warranty period remaining if at all). As far as reliability goes you should be pretty right, but buying one that already has a nice exhaust and cold air intake, lowered, maybe a set of nice wheels and tuned will save you the best part of $5000 in mods you might like to one day get.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

The SV6 is a good thing and with less mass hanging out the front end turns into corners just that little bit better. It's probably the best-balanced VE.

In every other respect, you'll enjoy the SS a lot more even if you do have to cough up another $20 a week in fuel.

If you've ever thought to yourself that you would like to own a V8 one day, today is that day. You might not have that option in a few years from now...

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

There is a large difference in fuel consumption from experience in the real world (auto vs auto) and resale won't be that bad either way. Sv6's will be the next p-platers car.

If you're thinking about an SS and don't get it you most likely will regret it though.

    Re: SV6 vs SS Purchase

Well I am going tomorrow to drive them both back to back. The thing is from what I have read the SV6 is a lot more smooth to drive and the manual transmission is nicer and I do value smoothness and all that!

Anyway, I just have to drive it and determine if the V8 is indeed worth the extra $5k and extra insurance and fuel and if there are actually benefits from the SV6. I will be placing my order tomorrow most likely as I already had it set up for an SV6, I'll let you guys know how I go!

I have to disagree with most other posters. The SV6 is a good thing and IMO surprisingly quick up to the speed limits. Of course it doesn't have the grunt of the v8 but it's more refined, smoother, easier to drive and gets better economy especially around town. Yes, I've come from modified LSx cars and yet I love the SV6 so I can directly compare the two. Around town I'd have the SV6 if you drive in traffic a lot.

I'd agree with KeenGolfer, I have a SV6 MY10 SIDI auto, it has plenty of get and go, around town fuel consumption is much better, but not that much difference on a trip/ highway running. The SIDI engine cars also have 6 speed auto (210Kw) and change down with little provocation, which may account for the performance impression. I haven't driven a 5 speed auto SV6 for comparo but wheels magazine when they tested a MY10 SV6 said something along the lines of it feels like the shackles had been removed compared to previous VE SV6's.
