Hi guys,
Whats the best thing for me to do. I just noticed that the rubber buttons on my VY SS car key are cracked and now I can't unlock my car due to cracked buttons and possibly a flat battery (in the remote). Do people generally get the rubberbuttons & battery from eBay and perform DIY or is there another way that is still cost effective?

you have to crack the plastic open to replace the battery, its never the same trying to glue it back together.
do you have a spare working key? you can take that to Mister Minit and get a new one copied.
When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
You can get a full shell for the keys cheap now
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/COMMODORE...item4cfee8e535
(have a search on ebay you may get it cheaper)
Or a Chev logo one

Then get a battery from the 12v shop or elsewhere and change the battery when you open up the old case.
Thanks for the replies/options guys.
Yes I do still have a working spare.
I'm probably going to do one of two things: go to Mister Minit or buy a housing & transfer over the transponder unit & key.
Does anyone know if the battery is soldered inside the remote housing or is it just clipped in?
Anyone know what type of battery this remote uses?

Hi
I can confirm a WK Grange (vyii) has a soldered in battery. And can also confirm once you pull the key apart its best to get a new case for it as it is never the same.

Both keys on our VT weren't working - it wasn't the battery, or buttons... It was actually the metal tag for the battery terminal. It snapped at the PCB.
Soldered up both, and they work again!
Thanks for the replies guys,
Weird thing happened this morning. I used the "good" working spare key to unlock the car through the remote. I then put my other key with the (cracked buttons) in the ignition and turned the key to ACC to do something with my head unit. I then got out of the car and locked the car with the key with the cracked buttons via the remote...very strange, the key with the cracked buttons has suddenly starting working. Does anyone have an explanation for this? Does the iginition charge the battery in the remote, or was there maybe bad contact between the battery and the clip inside the remote, & moving it inside the ignition helped it somehow
maybe it lost its recognition of that key. part of the process to do a new key is to open the car with the old working key then put the new one in the ignition...maybe, maybe not can be a few things.

Yes, maybe. Strange thing is, the key with the cracked buttons was the key that was used most often. I will probably buy a new shell (with rubber buttons) and swap everything over. Are there any shells (without the tansponder unit) on ebay (or elsewhere) that have the Holden emblem on the back?
pretty sure mister mint, key places should have em, holmart maybe and ebay should defiantley have em
Do yourself a favour, go to a reputable locksmith and get 2 replacements cut & coded. Saves a lot of rooting around.
