    Re: Most reliable ls1 engine

heh, i had a VX SS series 1, the engiune was originally replaced at ~15K, i bought it with 78K on the clock. The 'new' engine still burned oil
at approx 1.5 litre per 3000k's etc. but didnt have any real issues with it except a blown cat at 90K. None the less i got rid of it at 140K
and bought a VY SS series II with 30K's on the clock. The VY is now at 110K and the engine is just sweet as in it. Its a keeper.

I would recommend going an ls2/ls3 swap though if replacing. May cost more, but the gains will be worth it.

210k on my VZ. Only owned it for 3 weeks but it's running great and loves the extra boot when I lay it on (sensibly of course). Cant wait to do a few things to get a bit more go out of it, its dead stock now but still nice o drive.
Unless there's any big difference electrically I don't see why a VZ motor couldn't be used. Would only need to change the throttle body for the cable operated one, I've looked and the manifold still has the mounting points for he cable bracket so it wouldn't be an issue.

Piston & rings were redesigned by Holden in mid to late '93 from memory - so I would think cars after this date should be pretty problem free. Having said that, not all earlier models had problems (provided they were run in properly & had good ring bed in).

Did Holden do the redesign, or GM Powertrain? Did the early LS1 have the same problems overseas?

    Cheers, SLuggy

    Re: Most reliable ls1 engine

this is what wiki has on the topic :

The LS6 shares its basic block architecture with the GM LS1 engine, but other changes were made to the design such as windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength and bay to bay breathing, an intake manifold and MAF-sensor with higher flow, a camshaft with higher lift and more duration, a higher compression ratio of 10.5:1, sodium filled valves, and a revised oiling system better suited to high lateral acceleration.[3] LS6 intake manifolds were also used on all 2001–2002 LS1 engines. The casting number, located on the top rear edge of the block, is 12561168. Applications:

    2001–2004 Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06
    2004–2005 Cadillac CTS V-Series

    Re: Most reliable ls1 engine

The LS6 block started appearing in some of the VX cars, my July 2001 VX SS series 1 has an LS6 block, where as my son had a 2001 VX SS and it had the LS1 block.
The number is cast on the back of the block, passengers side (see the pic below) just below the head, where the head and block join. It is in a very hard spot to see, you need a mirror, lots of patience and a torch, it may be easier to see from underneath on a hoist not sure though. I had just about given up trying to see mine when I angled the mirror a bit differently and then spotted it, very hard to find from above. As far as I know the later cars went to the LS6 block but the VX was a bit of a mix.

My VX Calais LS1 has just clocked up 175 000 km.Did a service on it today and it hasnt used or burnt any oil at all.It had a good service history
before i bought it which i think really helps.Ive had it for a year now and done the usual mods like tune and intake. So far its been really reliable.
