Insurance time again...what the go with NRMA?

So I'm shopping around for comprehensive car insurance because my current insurer wants $1700 for $30000 VE which seem a bit steep, so I get an on-line quote from NRMA for the same value and it comes to $1090, much cheaper but there on-line quoting system doesn't ask about about mods to the car, I read through the PDS and there is also nothing about mods so I rang them and the girl assures me as long as the mods are legal the cars covered to the agreed value ,Hmmmm, its a good price but it seems to good to be true, anyone else had a claim with NRMA under this system and how did it go?

I've been with NRMA since owning my SS and told them about every single mod that's been done over the years and they've never questioned me once but as said they do have to be legal.. I've got mine insured for 50k and it's an 06 model, I pay $150 per month for full comprehensive, I rate them pretty high cos most of the others I've enquired about always have a catch or limit you on modifications..

    Cheers Johnny

I was with NRMA for 25 years. I got a tune and OTRCAI. Told the chick at the counter and she said she would have to ring the underwriters. She came back 15 minutes later and said she had just had a round table teleconference and they decided not to offer me future insurance.

25 years driving exeperience NIL INFRINGEMENTS, NIL AT FAULT CLAIMS and I was wiped like a dirty bum. Thank you NRMA.

NRMA's policy is any mods are allowed as long as they are legal. And the value of mods are included in the agreed value

I think you'll find all the big companies who will insure modded cars, including AAMI who I'm with, have the rider that the mods must be legal and roadworthy. That obviously gives them an out should they choose to take it for many of us, but I guess that's the risk we take. I also believe that if your car is unroadworthy they can wipe your claim only if they can prove the unroadworthiness contributed to the accident. I made an at fault claim on mine just over a year ago and took it to the local AAMI assessment centre to have the repairs authorised. The car was it's normal loud and low self and they didn't blink an eye. Maybe being an old fart has its advantages at times.

Just got off the phone from NRMA. I told her that I was previously wiped, and asked her if the situation had changed. The girl thrashed it around the office for a while and came back and said they would insure me again so long as the mods are legal.

I poised the question to her. "So if I got an after market exhaust which exceeded the legal db reading s and I had a collision which in no way was attributable to the exhaust, would i be covered?" She said. "No, because the mods to your car must be legal and you have breached the terms of the contract."

Food for thought. Factory standard exhaust are right on the legal db limit, and after markets 99.9% of the time go over....the issue of exposed filters in OTRCAI also rises its head, plus emmisions due to mafless tunes?

Hmmm, as I said, that's the risk we take when we modify our cars. I guess probably a high percentage of us on here are therefore technically uninsurable, but as far as I can see very, very few of us have ever had claims refused. My mods are all listed with AAMI - not sure whether that's a good or bad thing.

Yeah, I have had similar conversations with AAMI. I think they are happy to take your money, but also would be happy not to pay out when it comes to the crunch. I will stick with Shannons. A quick online AAMI quote (out of curiosity) for my wifes mildly modded Rex came in at a little over double that of our Shannons Policy. When I tried to do a quote on my SS it gave me a message telling me to ring and speak with a consultant.

PS...I was with NRMA for nearly 14 years and had the SS with them when it was Catback and Tune. They ditched us when we moved to Darwin as they did not offer cyclone cover at the time.

Re: Insurance time again...what the go with NRMA?

So, a few years back I get an OTR, tune and full zorst system on the VE. I call NRMA to advise of the mods. I fortunately get an operator (female) who understands cars and mods and tells me "no issues"..."I had the same done to mind and it's not a problem"....My response "Please note this on my file etc".

A year or two later after a few more mods on the VE, the renewal comes in for a value I deem less than replacement value. A quick chat to NRMA re the "new mods" and I'm covered for twice the value they quoted me. Yep insurance companies make money from not paying claims, but if you force the issue with them, you usually get a result re policy and payout in need.

That said, I'm off to car largish car show soon and will get the Shannon's rep over for an appraisal just to see what someone else thinks.

Re: Insurance time again...what the go with NRMA?

The impression I got from the girl at NRMA was my mods wouldn't even be listed on the policy.
I dont know how you guys get good prices from Shannons, I have had 2 quotes from them in the past and both times they were more expensive than anyone else.
Not sure which way to go, I am currenty with GIO and I have found their service to be very good and they offer choice of repairer but I dont know if that alone is worth an extra $650 per year.

IMHO Insurance companies dont have enough regulation, they are the only companies that have the right to discrimanate againt someone because of their age, "Australian Pensioners Insurance" FFS, if you opened a business in any other industy and charged someone more because of their age it would be front page news across the country.

Re: Insurance time again...what the go with NRMA?

im with NRMA. I changed to NRMA about 10 years ago now.

Back then i was 25, had a stock VR SS, and suncorp wanted $1600 per year for full comp.

This is way too much to pay, so i decided that even if NRMA were to be not the best of insurers
(ie in how they handled their claims etc) the money saved is worth it. NRMA charged me ~$700 a year
for my VR/VX/VY SS and and over the 10 years thats a saving of almost $10K.

I have had to have 1 claim since i have been with NRMA, and that was about 2 months ago (not at fault)
when a P plater girl ran up my rear bumber. (car is only modded with pacey's, exhasut (no OTRCAI) and
    looks very very stock)

NRMA handled it well and i got my car back fixed fairly quickly, and the workshop that did it i would say did a good job.

Well thats my experiance so far.

Re: Insurance time again...what the go with NRMA?

I just took out a policy with AAMI, as im under 25 a lot of insurance companies wouldnt touch me with my ve ssv ute. Rang AAMI, and got a policy for $1070 a year for $40,000 agreed value. My excess though is $1150 which i dont really mind.

They asked about mods and i said lowered, tuned, OTR and full exhaust and said yep no worries, told them $5000 of additional value i had put on the car and all was good, pretty happy actually

    Cheers
    Matt

    wow, NRMA is cheap.

im paying $650 now for my VY SS, male 36 in brisbane.

location and theft rate may have a lot to do with total cost differences on locations.
