Thanks for the compliments, but certainly not talking it down, just giving the other side of the coin.
So far the only ones to say its involving are the test drive journos....but what is involvement? Is it speed? Is it steering feedback? There needs to be more hard scrutiny of this car as its powerplant is lacklustre, will not turbocharge well with DI (trust me we race enough flat engines to know of their inherent compromise for anything other than packaging) and its weight per size per output nothing brilliant.

Toyota 86 GTS at 1200kg and 147kw gives 8.16kg per kw for say $36K - $38K drive away with 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds
WRX at 1455kg and 195kw gives 7.46kg per kw for $39K - $41K drive away with 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds

Take away the tiny cutsie two door body for a moment and realise while there might be some of this mythical stuff you cant bottle called involvement, and its got to be bloody good stuff at that as the 86 doesnt offer any more than commuter car grunt.

That too....certainly 147kw will struggle for the bigger lads
Never thought I would have a purists sports car discussion on a forum built on the clout of blown, cammed 5700cc plus engines, and 1/4 mile passes. Maybe times really have changed?

It's a good point Martin, I was worried when I started the thread that it would turn to a pile of crap fairly quickly. But thanks to all those involved and to you Martin for showing the other side of the coin (as you put it) and doing it objectively. I'm with you, I am a big fan, but I am certainly not sold until I speak to a few buyers and see it for myself. I think there is real market for this car, I think the sale numbers will back it up, but in the end, is it really going to shake things up and move many members of this forum to a totally differnt driving package/experience.

    Times will tell!

    Cheers

    Dave

Be interesting to see how soon some hit the 2nd hand market and how much value they lose - not including demo models
just did an online quote with AAMI on a GTS manual - $1590- value $35,490
No driving offences and 2 claims in the last 3 years

They appeal to us V8 people as well - I want one in my garage alongside my SS. I don't care that it won't do 13 second quarters. I do care that it's mall, light, cheap, manual and RWD. You'd be mad to spend $30k on some FWD box when you could have this.

The 2012/13 Subaru Legacy GT DIT is coming out with this same motor but with a twin scroll turbocharger and 221kw@5600RPM and 400Nm@ from 2000-4800RPM

Compared to 147kW@7,000RPM and 205Nm@6500RPM. 50% power and 100% torque gains? Yes please. GT motor would put the power:weight @ 180kw/Tonne. Standard 2012 HSV GTS runs about 176kw/Tonne

    Re: Toyota 86

wow so many comments since my last one.

Yes this is not a powerhouse and it surprisingly has a bit of weight compared to its AE86 origins, wasn't that 150hp and 800kg ?
However I refered to it as a sports car, because of its agile nature, weight distribution and it has a adeqate engine to move the car for A to B for those owners. I personally like these people cause I like non molestered cars, but I dont care that much cause once ive owned it, its been test driven.

Alot of people have hit this car on the head, in what is often reffered to "bang for buck" its not perfect, its not poo, its got potential and although I drive turbo charged, or v8's or whatever im suplied by my employer i'd still buy one of these.

Im also 99% sure I saw one today, but it could of just been somebody's mum doing the grocery shopping......so many use's

    Smile Re: Toyota 86

Hi Lads, We have one here at the dealership now, Its a GTS 6 Speed Auto. Its not a bad car it just lacks some things......it could have been a cracking good car. The rims are just so small,16s on the GT,17 on the GTS, Its not like they have to be wide, just 18s & 19s would have looked heaps better in my opinion.
Im quite tall and i actually cant drive the Manual version cos my knee hits the steering wheel and centre console.....Just wish it had more room!
Other than that, it drives very well, sharp steering, turn in is very good and in the wet, traction off,VSC off its amazingly good!

A friend of mine who is very critical with cars test drove one. Said everything was great, perfect almost, just dead slow and didn't move.

    Re: Toyota 86

147Kw from a NA 2 litre sounds OK to me (the Ecotec 3.8 in the VS was the same power), the base car sells for about $30K, the value for money is pretty good. I have no doubt they will sell to Toyota expectations, and some here might be tempted to get out of their ageing LS1 and try something else.

V-Sport has taken delivery of one to develop as a track car
They have entered the car in the 2012 Motor Hot Tuner competition
There is a link on their website showing Neal Bates at Wakefield Park
