Exclamation 05 VZ SS photos and small problem HELP please

    Hey everybody

this is my first post so if I am putting this in the wrong area then sorry

I have a 05 VZ SS Ute that I bought in November, I was doing an oil change when I noticed a breather tube coming out of my drivers side rocker cover, nothing special you might say but this one doesn't go anywhere. it is open to the air, now I am not a mechanic but even I know that if it is a fresh air intake for the cover it goes into somewhere like the intake manifold so it is sucking clean air.

I looked in my Haynes Repair Manual for this model and it said it should be going into the intake manifold like I thought but instead where mine is a pipe leads from there to under the intake manifold (looks like the valley cover) this is not in my book (in the book it is just a steel valley cover with nowhere to put this pipe)

here is a few photos to see what I mean

as you can see number 1 is where I am talking about, number 2 you can see the pipe leading under the manifold, and number 3 is the little bee I found that almost went into the pipe, so you can imagine how much dust that is sucking up every day.

please someone help me, if you have the same model as me can you please look under your bonnet and tell me someone has just been a dumb ass and put the wrong pipe here.

as you can see I have a fair bit of dust under the bonnet, I do a lot of country driving and I know this has to be doing damage to something, but more to the point why does a steel plate under the manifold need a breather pipe? is this confusing or am I just a dumb ass who has no idea lol

I note that you have an aftermarket intake pipe fitted. My guess is that the PCV hose that you are pointing out ought to be tapped into your intake pipe, to put some positive air pressure into the engine, for the PCV system to operate correctly.

If you look at most electronic throttle body LSx engines, you will see such a pipe attached to their intake somewhere, then running into the rocker cover.

On the cable throttle engines, the PCV hose ran from the throttle body to the rocker cover, like so -

As macca33 said, the hose in question should be connected to the air intake, see pic.

From your pics, I can't see if your car still has the factory air intake pipe but the hose should go into the side of the intake pipe.

    Hope that helps.

    Could be.

However, if there was a catch can installed, it was installed incorectly as catch cans don't have inlet /outlet from air intake or rocker cover.

Yep looks like a YellaTerra pipe you've got there.
I gave Chev one to put on when he did my tune.
    Easy fix

Oh and thanks Sam for the GReddy can

yeah I have picked up a bit of hose and a brass fitting to connect it to the intake, I will have some fun putting it in this weekend, so thanks everyone

I didnt realise this was an after market intake pipe but looking at the stock one here there is a fair bit of differance, I am not someone looking to put any extreem mods on this car I just love the look and love the ride and to tell you the truth I have already gone through a set of back tyres since January so I think I have more than enough grunt as it is

Is this only required on the VZ or should it be this way also on a VY?

Re: 05 VZ SS photos and small problem HELP please

    chillicat,

I have no idea about your car but the reason I noticed something was wrong is I have never seen a pipe open to fresh air like this, if it is a vacuum pipe in this case the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) they should always go into something if only to stop dust and crap going into you engine, most just go to the air intake pipe or the air filter to have clean air, the reason I started this post was because the Haynes book I have told me this pipe was supposed to go into somewhere else and I wanted to see what other people had on there's. but the Haynes book covers an earlier engine design with only some very minor differences by the looks of it.

so all I am saying is if you have a pipe on your engine that is sucking in air (has a vacuum) but is not conected to a clean air source then I would do something about it. I am sure any mechanic on this web site will agree with me.

Re: 05 VZ SS photos and small problem HELP please

OK - sorry for dragging up an old thread - but I found it to be along the lines of the problem I am encountering and thought I should ask here:

I am trying to locate a problem I have with my VE at them moment running "rough". In 2nd and 3rd gear I am experiencing "stuttering/slight kagarooing" as I accelerate (only noticeable in light/moderate acceleration)
I have had my tune looked at and all is OK, and my next step was to take the car back to standard tune/intake etc and see if problem still persists.

    BUT....

This mornig I lifted the bonnet and was looking around, and I opened my SS Inductions Growler OTR and found that the PCV hose was not connected... bingo!.... maybe?
I have connected and gone for a quick drive, and I have to say I think some of my sluggishness has gone away - car seems to pull alot harder.
I am going for another drive now to see if the "stuttering" issue has gone or not.....

    My question though is...
The position of the PCV hose in a SS Induction OTR is just in the bottom of the intake scoop and is not protected by any kind of filter to stop dust/objects from going down the hose!
Is there a need for this hose to be "filtered" as such? As on the OEM intake it is protected by the air filter box... Will it clog the PCV valve (if the VE has one?)

Could there be any problems associated with having it not filtered.... like the problems I am having now?

thanks for any help in advance...

POST EDIT: I have now figured it is filtered as it plugs into the bottom of the duct that the filters are attached to.... now I am just hoping that my problem has gone away as I dont fancy going back to a standard tune etc and then trying to find the problem..
If not, maybe plugs and leads are next before I flash my tune back to standard... they have only done 44,000 klms though - - but probably worth a try

OK well my car definitely feels heaps more responsive... I would say 90% better! (am I imagining it or would a PCV hose off cause these issues?)
Is there anything else I should look for as problems associated with this hose being disconnected (I would say it has been off 4 approx 3-4 months - this is the length of time that I have had the problem..)

anyone have any quality input here except a useless "dislike" from one member for asking a question in an old thread on the same topic?
