The car advice website has it at:
0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds for the manual. The automatic takes an extra 0.6 seconds.

So far the only ones to say its involving are the test drive journos....but what is involvement? Is it speed? Is it steering feedback? There needs to be more hard scrutiny of this car as its powerplant is lacklustre, will not turbocharge well with DI (trust me we race enough flat engines to know of their inherent compromise for anything other than packaging) and its weight per size per output nothing brilliant.

Toyota 86 GTS at 1200kg and 147kw gives 8.16kg per kw for say $36K - $38K drive away with 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds
WRX at 1455kg and 195kw gives 7.46kg per kw for $39K - $41K drive away with 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds

Take away the tiny cutsie two door body for a moment and realise while there might be some of this mythical stuff you cant bottle called involvement, and its got to be bloody good stuff at that as the 86 doesnt offer any more than commuter car grunt.
Ohh what a surprise! Pushing the AWD vehicle again ( too bad it doesn't rain 24/7 - may actually be worth getting one).

Maybe you should read WHEELS June 2012, Peter Robinsons review (a world respected Journo )on the 86 against the Cayman - Cayman is quicker (bigger motor) but not on the twisty bits. Driver involvement is huge, it is what makes the MX-5 so successful. Some people actually like good steering, good handling and slick Gearbox cars over straight out grunt, and having driven a few MX-5's I know where they're coming from!

I placed a deposit subject to a test drive, and finally got to drive a demo last weekend. I am following through with the purchase! It's no powerhouse compared to the Maloo I sold, but as 80% of my driving is the daily commute, the car is perfect. Not just because I'm buying one, but Toyota have finally built something with a some spirit about it, and there really is nothing else like it on the market unless you want an MX5 or a 1 series BMW.

Steering is direct, manual shift is the equal or better than the MX5's I've owned, acceleration is dull, it rides like a sportscar yet seems compliant, and the cabin a bit snug for a bloke my size, but so were the MX5's. That's what I got out of a 20 minute test drive.

Yeah they can. Even has LSD across all bar the GT automatic. It's a direct injection 2.0l H4. Not a Holden starfire. For the money I think they are a very good car. The aftermarket scene will sort out those who desire more power.

I drove past the dealership in Crows Nest and saw one outside the showroom (registered)so is obviously available for a test drive, looks o.k.
Also have seen the t.v. adv. set out in the desert pushing heaps of dust, wonder if an adv. set on tarmac is on the cards

Martin, will be very keen to see what you can do with the car, I think I may be up for a visit to SA later this year.

I wouldn't buy one of these things even to modify it.

In fact, it fails the more I think of it.

    Re: Toyota 86

Personally I think Toyota have blown this one......They've got a potentially good platform, given it a gutless motor, and what looks like some Bob Jane $800 with tyres wheel package. I really hope Subaru up the ante and get STi to throw a turbo in there.....otherwise its just a hairdressers car that will struggle greatly if Nissan were/rumoured to release another SR20 powered 200.

Like come one, did I read it does 0-100 in mid to high 7 second range? their big family car the Aurion does it in under that.

But which would you rather drive and admit to owning?

    No problems Andrew
One thing for sure our WR86 package which I am working on is going to throw a cat amongst the Evo and WRX owners at track days and the like here.
There is no such word as 'cant' in this game
