    Re: Toyota 86

I wouldn't say that Toyota have blown this one, they have marketed this very well and it has seen JDM fan boys line up to Toyota showrooms around the country to lay down their deposits. Fact that their is a huge waiting list is testament to that! I believe however that the secondhand market place will be saturated with these things when they fall well short of expectations. So, if you're in the market for one, I'd wait 12 months and pick up a bargain.

In relation to the car itself, the base model's power to weight ratio (147kw's and 1200kg) is mediocre at best. Further, the base model has very little in the way of creature comforts which will see you loading it up with options, (which can add up to 85kg) and adding weight to the car takes away the fun factor which defeats it's intended purpose. The Rodney Jane spec tyre and wheel package is one of the worst aspects of the car when it comes down to visuals and will be the first thing enthusiasts and tuning houses will want to change. Wider wheels with more positive off set and tyres with more grip will make the car 'over-tyred' once again defeating it's purpose! The standard brakes are not worth a pinch of shit either and apparently fade after a handful of hard applications.

It's not as easy as just bolting a turbo to a factory N/A block and have the expectation that it is going to be reliable. Once you have strengthened the internals to cope with forced induction, bolting on a turbo and supporting modifications, suspension, new brake, tyre and wheel package, you'll be can easy double the initial purchase price. You may as well just go out and purchase a properly engineered performance car in the 60-80K price bracket and be done with it. From the factory, this really should have come equipped with an STI engine or an 180kw naturally aspirated screamer like what came as standard in the Honda S2000 13 years ago!!

These do come with man bags right?

Like come one, did I read it does 0-100 in mid to high 7 second range? their big family car the Aurion does it in under that.
Nissan wont release another sr20 powered car
there is no way they could get it to meet emissions these days and they cannned it 10 years ago lol

this car wont struggle too sell
and it pays homage too the ae86 which had 150hp out of a 1.6

the aftermarket have already taken care of the lower power i read that one jap company has 300hp atw out of the motor and its a brand new car

give it 6-12 months and there will be many different turbo kits available

i do agree about the wheels
they belong on an excel or something

Agreed with this post, i reckon there will be a sh1t load of these for sale in the up comming months, people selling WRX's etc for these only to fall short of expectations.

I bought one and am pretty certain I won't get to work each day any later than I could in my 300kw Maloo. What many loose perspective of when they speak of underfeatured, cheapish wheels and tyres, underpowered etc, is that these same criticisms can be levelled against an SV8 commodore, VE series SS Commodore and the like. How many of these haven't been tarted up with bigger wheels, custom/HSV interiors, etc.?? In fact, how many "standard" LS cars do you reckon are on this forum?

The car is what it is and the aftermarket will take of the rest, by the way it's a $30K car by the way, if you want more, buy the Porsche Cayman!!

Some valid points from both sides of the fence.

Personally I may buy a 2nd hand one in 12 months or so for the mrs. I honestly think it has great appeal but will fall short in the enjoyment factor. Hence perfect for a girl!

You might not get to work any faster but getting whipped from the lights by taxis can only shrink the testicles!

I agree, it is perfect for a girl. My girlfriend is thinking about trading in her Toyota Echo for one of these

It's not designed for the cool traffic light drag crowd.

Busted. It's the 1.5 litre 108hp 'high horse power' version though.

There is no such word as 'cant' in this game
Surprised Davo hasn't piped up yet, he might be on holiday.

Knew you wouldn't miss a chance to advertise a product after giving the car a bagging.

On the same note I'm actually interested in what you put together for it....

My thinking exactly. To be honest, if I was in the market for something like this I'd be steering towards an MX5 or a second hand S2000 or 200sx. At least the MX5 and S2000's are convertibles which would have it over the 86 and the 200sx is turbo with much more potential from the word go.
