    where do i start

well like i was saying in my stone chip thread about people saying look up old threads that dont even apply to what your asking or been said before why dont we just answer there question, if its been brought up before who cares if your got nothing constructive to say dont say it also in the for sale thread we sort of are a perormance site if you have stand cats or standard wheele nuts for sale go else where im not trying to be a dick head just saying what the site should be about, not trying to piss the medeartior off or other people off but sick of people trying to sell shit stuff or saying you havent been on here before but ive actually been on here for years, we have talked about stone chips before and dont want to here it again so if you dont like what people are asking don go into the thread. if this gets me banned so be it, again im not trying to cause trouble just the way im feeling about the site

Don't sweat on it too much,I AND others have tried to find threads b4, wording IS everything to have a win sometimes
I have also started threads due to lack of success searching and had unfriendly feedback telling me to search harder,so I am with you,if a forum member doesn't like an old thread being restarted why go there just to bag some-one,nicer to post a link or title if you know what the original thread is

It's a little hard to work out what you're saying with all of your sentences blended into 1 long rant, but I'll do my best.
The topic about people starting new threads on well covered topics has been discussed at length before. You say you have trouble finding the information you're after, so you start a new thread, but in doing so you only add to the long list of search results that other users will have to sift through to get the info they're after (i.e. you're adding to the problem). Keeping the same of similar topics in as few threads as possible makes it easier to locate information.

This thread is as pointless as the stone chip thread where the same info is being repeated, and not sinking in. Lost cause i think.

Use Google for forum searches. Much better than any forum search engine i find. See below pic for example:

If you just type 2 words into the search, it will give you all results that contain either of the words, not just both of the words. However, if you type vf commodore into the search, it will also ignore the vf part (as it is under 3 characters and too common) and just search for "commodore". Clearly searching for "commodore" on a Holden site is a waste of time.
To search specifically for "vf commodore" you need to put it inside quotation marks to tell it to search for both together. To use the search function successfully when searching large databases (like this forum) you need to use boolean operators to help narrow your search: http://www.melbpc.org.au/faq/boolean.htm

In the case above, and in a lot of cases a person might start a thread (as above) and where a thread already exists with the info or is a better place to ask (as with above) a link is usually posted (as with above)

What HSV069 asked re stone chips was quite valid and the possible answer would have been helpful to many members. However A psycho was quite right in suggesting to him to ask it in the car care section where an expert would of given professional advice.

    Re: where do i start

I too have found searching much easier, like A PSYCHO pointed out, it works quite well.

And as for your rant selling standard cats etc etc, I've seen quite a few threads now where peeps are desperate for standard cats, air box etc to either return their car to stock for sale, or to clear a defect. If you don't like the for sale threads about standard cats, air boxes, wheel nuts etc, don't read them, isn't that your philosophy?

I would like to think this is an enthusiasts forum, as opposed to a performance car forum. Lets face it, 95% of people on here (including myself) don't own performance cars as such, we own family saloons/farmers ute's with big loud motors chucked in the front.

Unfortunately for us, spellcheck wont pick up words that are spelt correctly but used in the wrong context. For example: Where, were and we're. Here and hear. Their and there etc.. Not to mention punctuation.

And to HSV069, I feel that the site is a fantastic wealth of knowledge if you take the time to read a few pages you stumble on, you never know mate, you might learn something you can put to use at a later date. Many of the 'older' folk (not 18 and illiterate) have much knowledge that they are more than happy to part with in my experience.
Look closely, LS1.com.au is not a performance site such as ET Str or Street Com (can i get away with that mods?) which you may be more suited to starting threads in.
I also believe that there is a place for standard parts in the classifieds, in fact i personally have sold quite a few standard parts to others who needed them for rebuilds or to pass EPA and so on.
Not sure why it says member since July 2012 in your header bar if you've been here for years either.

Just wondering ....... instead of having to educate everyone to use Google site search, is it possible to use Google search as the forum search engine? Easy to integrate in an HTML site, but not sure if possible with the BBS this forum runs on....... If not easy, maybe add a html box to the front page and insert Google site search there would work....?

Old mate HSV069 might have just been letting off steam with this thread, but he is right about a couple of points. For sure some forum users seem to take joy in criticising "silly" questions - and anyone with poor grammar/spelling look out. The bad grammar, txt words, no punctuation mega word paragraphs shit me to tears too - but this is a car forum, not Mensa FFS.

True, but it can be very hard to find out what the complaint/question is with one rolling, poorly worded and ill-punctuated block of text ... honest mistakes happen, but try and keep it legible.

This has been done on many forums for the general search. The thing about the forum built in search is that is has far more features and search parameters than could provide as well as being the most up to date whereas is only as current as it's most recent cache. Also cannot access the private/validated areas of the forum either limiting the search field.

Maybe someone can put up some examples in a sticky about boolean's? I have included a couple of links however I don't really know enough about it all to say if this is an exhaustive sort of list or if there better ways.
