probably should have gone for shortened shocks.
I have recently had a set of SSL King springs fitted all round to the 2012 VE SS M6 Sportwagon series II with the standard shocks.
The car 'looks' a lot better, now it does not have its nose stuck up in the air.
However now when I tow the gokart trailer the rear end seems to bang on the hard bumps and pogo on the smaller bumps.
The weight of the trailer is approximately 900kg, with the ball weight just being able to be lifted by 2 men.
Has anyone had any recent experiences as to using the standard shocks or should I have replaced the shocks with aftermarket units, such as the Monroe as advertised on the King web site ?
Or is there is a better combination, I look forward to any advice.
Thanks
probably should have gone for shortened shocks.
thanks for the advice bozodos, what is the benefit of the shortened shock ?
Shortened shocks compliment the springs well. I did the same as you in my wagon, but found it 'rebounding' over ruts and thumping over potholes efc. Monroe shortened shocks will help a lot and remove some of the harshness.
I see a bigger issue here though as you've said it takes two guys to lift the drawbar of your trailer, indicating a lot of weight on your tow bar which will make your car handle like sh^t. Can you distribute the weight better in the trailer to reduce some of the drawbar weight?

I can't comment on the towing aspect but in my experience SSLs with stock shockers (as I ran for a year before Monroe/Kings released the Monroe GT short shocks) can even be potentially dangerous in some situations - see http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthre...1&#post1769571
I agree with Wonky. I did 10,000kms on Kings with standard shocks and would not do it again. Save up your money and do it all at once![]()
Thanks for the advice everyone,
Definitely going back for shocks ASAP, and getting it done correctly.
From the short shock choices, and ending up with a good cost effective result, what would be the better option
1. Monroe GT Short shock
2. KYB
3. Koni
4. Bilstein
I would be hoping to limit the spend to $1000 for front and rear, or am I dreaming ?
Cheers
1k will get you bilsteins if you shop around.
I have a set here, but haven't had them fitted yet![]()
$250 is a good number, so for front and rear would be approx $500 ?
Is that pricing from ebay or from a retail store ?
Around $500 or so should get you Monroes for front and rear plus fitting of course.
Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. I can get front and rears for around $250, I have a contact at Monroe/Teneco/Walker exhaust. I meant to say that you should be able to get all four corners for around $350-500 depending on where you buy and if you have any contacts at auto shops.
From my experience, a worthy upgrade. Unless you want to fork out the extra coin for coil overs (depending on what state you live in may or may not be legal).

Thanks Hos,
this is one cheap option to fix a very annoying issue.
Thought about the Coil overs, the budget will not stretch that far, and had a concern as to the harshness.
Why is there so much weight on the drawbar? Can you move things in the trailer to better balance the tow ball weight? This will still cause you issues otherwise, as the weight on your towbar is adding considerable weight to your rear end and lightening your front end.

Also, there are complete shock sets on eBay for around $400 delivered.
