My 13 year old daughter loves photography and I get scared everytime sho borrows my camera. Anyway, just bought her (for Christmas) a Canon 1100D from Harvey Norman with a 18-55mm lens for $398! I thought that was a bargain?
Sure am. I had my 600D with me as well, and while some of the shots from it were still nice, there just didn't seem to be as much detail recoverable from shadowy areas. It feels like a tiny kids toy in my hand now compared to the 5D2 with the battery grip on. With the 5D2 I quickly found I needed to dial in +2/3 exposure compensation otherwise it underexposes all my shots. From a bit of research it seems it's pretty common. I really need to get the sensor cleaned on it too. I found a couple of the pics I took on my last trip needed a few spots removed. I'm not surprised though as I'm doing a lot of travel with work right now and I'm taking it with me each trip and wandering off into the wilderness taking shots after work. Changing lenses in rainforests, on beaches, and in paddocks is bound to let a bit of dust in. Easy enough to clean though.

It's been over 1 year since I purchased the Canon 600D with the twin lense\ kit. I've gotten to the stage where I want to trade in the 2 lenses and replace it with one. It just makes it easier to have the one lens. I've found a shop in the city that will buy my second hand lenses as trade in for a Tamron 18-270mm D-II VC-Pzd Zoom. I would then pay $500. It seems a bit steep considering I can get that that lens for about $400 on Ebay. Is that Tamron lens good? Any recommendation as to another replacement lens..
Thanks
Lots of nice photos here. I know stuff all about cameras, but want a camera/lens/anything else I need for sub $1K to take plenty of pic of family, and some of cars etc. I don't want to need to carry many lenses around, and need to upgrade bits later. What should I be looking at?
I would keep your favourite lens of the two and trade one to a decent lens. That way if your going to a party and dont want to be too worried about the lens take the cheapy but still good one, then if you want to do some decent work take the good lens.
My all rounder is the 24-105 Canon L Series, but I also cant so without my 10-22 wide angle.
With that sort of deal you're better off just buying the lens off Ebay for $400 and then offloading your 2 current lenses on Ebay or similar. They're not worth a lot but you should get about $200 for both without much trouble at all. As to the quality of the Tamron lens or replacement, I couldn't comment on them as I find myself using primes more these days.
You can get the Canon 600D or 650D with twin lens kit for around $800 brand new from CamerasDirect. That's enough to get you started and see how much you use it. I'd seriously consider 2nd hand market though, as lot of people offload theirs in a move to full frame, and you can take advantage of their desire to sell quickly and get a bargain.

I see jbhifi and cameradirect has the new 700D with the twin lens kit and it just breaks the $1K.
The jbhifi is 1088 and comes with a 18-55 IS STM lens and 55-250mm IS II lens
The cameradirect is 1093 and comes with 18-55 IS II and 55-250mm IS II lens
Is the STM lens offered by jbhifi a better option?
Bought a 60D with a single lens a month ago off kogan for $699 with free shipping. Best camera I reckon and so cheap. Takes some amazing photos.
JB have 15% off till the end of the weekend, so you'd be able to pick it up a bit over 900 if you're ready to purchase now.
I think that's the one i'll be getting, just can't do it at the moment
Edit - Kogan have them cheaper again, also have the IS lens pack cheaper if you want that one.

The jbhifi special excludes Canon and Panasonic.
Also I was in jbhifi and the display camera did not have the 18-55 STM on it, it had the non-STM. When I queried about it the sales person said they don't some with the STM in the twin lens kit. They sales brochure has the twin lens advertised and it stated 18-55 IS STM. Although in the brochure the price was $200 more.
Kogan looks like the best buy.
I think at the moment it looks like I have to make the choice between
700D with twin lens kit, 18-55 IS lens and 55-250mm IS II lens ($909) (the 650D is $889 with this lens)
or
700D with 18-135 IS STM ($999)
or
60D with 18-135 IS STM ($958)
I'm thinking the second option would give me a great all rounder lens to take with me everywhere. Then later I could always get some other lenses for specific jobs.
I'm still not sure about the 60D in the mix. I was told it's the next series up, but what do I gain or loose with it?
edit... drop the 60D, it is more a hard warning splash resistant version, but is not designed for video.
Just to add to the prior post. From the Canon website the 60D does support video. But I loose the touch screen, not sure how important the touch screen is in real life?
Have a read of http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D
It mentions Full HD video (1080p, 30/25/24fps)
Seems like it's not a newer model than the 50D but a change in where it fits into the model line up.
They have moved away from the metal body, going with plastic.
Looking at the 700D (http://www.dpreview.com/products/can...specifications) it looks like a better camera for the price.
