I would do the basics - go around the house, check for other phone lines - if any, ensure they are filtered.
Personally, the Thompson series modems are shite - pretty much all modems under $150 are ordinary.
If you can find someone with a Fritzbox modem that will plug in and help, I believe this will help you get better speed.
Your non-remediable errors are very high (the CRC error) as are your Remediable errors (the FEC error) - I am guessing a bad line, or on a RIM. Distance is not really the issue - you are about the same distance as me and I am synching at 13721 kbit/s
