    How fast should ADSL2+ be?

Ok, I have been doing a few line speed tests over the last couple of days and the line speed is always between 2 and 2.5mbps.
I am on Telstra's Bigpond liberty ADSL2+ plan, I have a Thompsen TG782T modem and live about 2500m by foot from the exchange.
I have tried the speed tests with our home phone and associated filters all disconnect and there is no change to the speed.
Can anyone give me some guidance on how to work out what speed I should be able to get? No matter how much I read on the topic I cant figure out if my speed is normal or not.
The current speed has never been a problem but recently we have got a smart telly and I would like to be able to watch HD movies but cant (Bigpond movies doesn't download to the device anymore, its live streaming so a slow connection makes it impossible to watch HD movies)

Below is the DSL connection details from my modem but I have no idea how to decipher it.

    Uptime: 4 days, 5:56:07

    DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 620 / 2,853

    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 368.91 / 1.56

    Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5

    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 36.5 / 46.0

    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.5 / 5.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 3 / 0

    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 13 / 0

    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

    Loss of Link (Remote): 0

    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 59 / 0

    FEC Errors (Up/Down): 162 / 4,567,046

    CRC Errors (Up/Down): 162 / 27,958

    HEC Errors (Up/Down): 24,396 / 23,796

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: How fast should ADSL2+ be?

    Depends is the answer...

number of subscribers in your area
quality of the copper in the ground
    age of the exchange
    time of day
    carrier
    weather etc

    I've used www.speedtest.net and although I'm on ADSL2 I only get around 1.2Mb down and 600K up.
Our exchange is overloaded and there's not much else they can do except wait for NBN.

2.5k doesnt help but your SNR and attenuation is junk that's why your sync is slow. Could be bad copper somewhere down the line. I feel your pain as I'm in a similar boat and am only 800m from exchange. Bring on the NBN

Re: How fast should ADSL2+ be?

Your down stream attenuation figures suggest that your theoretical attainable speed will be somewhere around 5800kbit\sec for ADSL1, and 6800kbit\sec for ADSL2. It suggests a line length of approximately 3330m. Forget ADSL2+ as you simply won't be able to achieve it with that line. This is only an approximation of course and your actual attainable rate is well below this.

Do you have anything else on the line like a back to base alarm? If not do the isolation test again using the first phone socket in the house and post the statistics up again.

Good ping. Slow transfers. Silly question but have you tried turning off your modem and turning it on again? Then speedtest again

Re: How fast should ADSL2+ be?

At work we've got loads of Telstra ADSL connections scattered in regional locations all over the country and we've solved a lot of our problems by locking the modems to ADSL1 profiles but we're using Cisco 877s which are a bit more stable than typical home appliance modems. Otherwise, if NBN is available then go for it. Failing that, if there's Telstra or Optus cable in your street then get on that. Both are much more reliable and less susceptible to noise and prevaling weather conditions than ADSL.

Re: How fast should ADSL2+ be?

We're out in the middle of nowhere on a dead end road so I suspect the lines which run down our road are quite old...... We're also on Bigpond ADSL2+ and had the usual Thompson modem till it died in a storm, now how a basic Billion modem. I do a speedtest.net test every so often and have had ping results vary from 26ms to double that (typically mid 30s), download speeds from 1.55 to 4.13Mbps and upload usually 0.32. No significant differences overall between modems i.e. they each vary up and down.

Re: How fast should ADSL2+ be?

I moved into a new area about 18months ago and signed up with iinet. I was told no ADSL2+ and they could hook me up on ADSL, which is more expensive than ADLS2+. Also if I pay an extra $10 a month I could get a boosted speed to up to 8mb. I struggled to sync at 5, and youtube meant everyone else in the house would be lagging. A while (read <1yr) later with no changes to any exchanges in the area etc, I swapped to SCTelco due to better pricing and downloads, and magically I got a ADSL2+ "DSL Speed (DS/US)11973/1019 Kbps" (current) connection speed.

Checking line details I'm 6860m from the exchange. So I'm happy with the newer provider.

How do you find your distance from the exchange Kev?

Attenuation on your line is about avg too - mine is 33/43

I would do the basics - go around the house, check for other phone lines - if any, ensure they are filtered.

Personally, the Thompson series modems are shite - pretty much all modems under $150 are ordinary.

If you can find someone with a Fritzbox modem that will plug in and help, I believe this will help you get better speed.

Your non-remediable errors are very high (the CRC error) as are your Remediable errors (the FEC error) - I am guessing a bad line, or on a RIM. Distance is not really the issue - you are about the same distance as me and I am synching at 13721 kbit/s
