V6 SIDI LPG? vs V8 LPG

Good Morning,

I currently have a VY Commodore on Injected Gas has been a great car and I have very little go wrong with it. (I think it did its power steering pump a few years back) Its now time for me to look at buying a new vehicle. I am not sure how to proceed. I do lots of KMs and don't really want to be spending $100s of dollars a week running the car.

I have a couple of questions. Is there any injected gas system for the Commodore that would work with a SIDI engine? I really like the whole Dual Fuel type idea but after talking with Holden its either Dedicated Petrol or Dedicated Gas not both. I have also spoken to where I got my Gas installed and they said they can do the VF V8 but not the VF V6.

So I thought I might seek some advice from you guys

I know the whole V8 idea sounds like I am talking SH!T but if you can put that on Gas maybe thats my way out? I have never owned a V8 before just have been happy with the V6

Would love to hear other peoples thoughts.

We bought a dual fuel Ve Berlina(factory and love it) get around 580kms for $50 per tank. About to drive to Wagga wagga next weekend 920km trip there so the dual helps, only down fall is boot space.

So maybe a late dual fuel VE is your best bet, otherwise a factory VF SV6 on gas would be nice, V8 conversions are around $5000 so cost a bit

Did the gas installer say why they couldn't convert the V6? Sounds like the SIDI doesn't lend itself to conversion. Why not go Dedicated? Do you travel to remote places where there may be no gas? I had a work dedicated gas Falcon wagon for 3 years (2006 - 2009) and never had any problem. Mostly I worked in Sydney but sometimes travelled country gas always available in major towns. Going to a V8 for no other reason than to convert to gas sounds a bit extreme and I presume your running costs will be more than a V6 on gas so your savings over a V6 will be reduced. Have you thought about converting a non SIDI - these will be more than 4 years old now, but if you are doing high k's, a low km non SIDI car could be a good thing for conversion. Otherwise there is always a Falcon, I assume you can convert a new or near Falcon no problem?

Yeah I was told because the way the Engine fires in a SIDI your right it doesn't lend itself to the conversion. I just fear you know that if I run out of GAS I am stuck and I would have no option to get the car towed. Unfortunately you can't keep a Gerry Can of LPG when you run out. I am just guessing the option to do the V8 and then convert would probably for me just gives me that option of not being stranded. I do run my current car on some PULP every couple of weeks just to keep everything nice (I was told to do that). You are right with the LPG being plentiful I guess its just nice to have that option especially when $$$ are low. Anyway I haven't considered the Ford I just not completely happy with what others have been telling me about their reliability. A mate from my work said to me that he has only been left on the side of the road a couple of times in the last 2 years. I kinda think thats a couple of times too many. He has a FG on LPG. But he doesn't seem to mind.

Anyway I did read that thread you put up but the whole thing of running 1/3 of KMs on Petrol to keep everything nice probably is a bit too much. I kinda don't want to run that risk.

Direct injection on a v6 ain't going to be possible. Port induction would be but that's if there is a solution to drive the lpg controller with the ecu

In the 3 years I had the gas Falcon, I had to get it towed once as I ran out of gas. there were 2 reasons I ran out, 1st was the gauge stuffed up, I was aware it was a problem and I knew how many Kms I could travel between fills so I thought I was OK, the thing that caught me out was the last fill before was unusually cheap (the fill cut off before the tank actually full), so I ran out having travelled less KMs than usual. The Falcon wagon actually had two 58 litre gas tanks, so a typical fill was up near 100 litres - I could travel 500 Km around town on something less than 100 litres. I could go from Sydney to Tweed Heads (830 Kms) it would take 100 litres at Tweed Heads, 4 years ago gas was 50c/ litre so $50 to go from Sydney to Tweed was pretty good.

Good point, gauges are a little out, ours has all 4 lights still on up until 330>340kms then drops quick.

Also some servos you seem to get more fill than others.

One of the guys at work is looking at getting his SIDI VE converted to LPG using the JTG system. He was told by ALPGW that he could do the conversion using the donut tank however there was a software issue that was being worked on that prevented the car running on petrol once the conversion had been done. Was told that there would be a fix around Christmas time this year.

Agree with QIKMIK about V8 gas. Boys at ALPGW converted my VF SSV Ute and it is magic.

I have converted my VF R8 about 1600km ago. Other than the less of boot space and the $$$ I am now spending I can't tell the difference

That's why I went the donut tank on mine. It still needs to be a useful family car. The lack of spare isn't much of an issue as the car does mostly town work and the kits come with a repair/goo kit just in case.
