We can congratulate our politicians on ALL Sides of the fence over recent past & current years, inept Global companies who control them and us the buying public (We are doing it to ourselves)

Meanwhile in other countries - Europe / NA receive plenty of subsidies, meanwhile 'we' appear to be caving in like some fore gone conclusion based on recent reports and events.

Say to those cheering - the predicted manufactures closures, please don't be too smug in thinking your imported new cars will drop in price once they are closed.
In this tiny Australian segmented world market you may be in for an eventual rude awakening.

Prices will not drop. They will be subjected to the same 'Australia Tax' that everything else is. Even pay more for stuff we download. People who think it will be cheaper are fooling themselves.

In this day and age, there are so many people that just want to grandstand their own 'cause' and in this case, slag off the Australian motor industry. You have all the people coming out of the woodwork saying 'no more subsidies' and 'the tax payer has support the industry long enough'. But what I want to know is, have these dimwits actually looked at the amount of money that is injected 'back' into the economy from what the government has offered. And how many jobs (as mentioned in thread title) that it maintains in the flow-on effect of parts and labour supplies from these manufacturers.

I personally am tired of hearing these people crap on without getting into the nitty-gritty of facts and figures.

The media for this has been just as bad, splashing negativity in it's usual fashion into making people believe that the industry is doomed and past the point of no return. And reported from people who do not seem to be too passionate about the car industry in general anyway!

If it does go their way, they better enjoy what short-lived success they achieve, as the s**t will hit the fan if it does.


I for one am supporting the Aussies (GTS on order), and proud of the cars that Holden/HSV have been making.

By crapping on yourself without providing any facts and figures. I take it you're in the process of compiling the net benefit to the Australian economy as we speak. Particularly in relation to the vast majority of the population that don't buy Australian cars.

Heres some facts on the car industry in Australia :

"At stake is $5.4 billion the car industry adds to the economy yearly, with a total benefit of $21 billion from its 50,000 direct employees and thousands of people in companies reliant upon car manufacturing.


The AMWU report states that total government support per head of population for the Australian car industry is $US18, compared to $28 for the UK, $90 in Germany, $96 in Canada, $147 in France and $264 in the USA.


Total government assistance for auto has fallen by 16 per cent since 2006-07, yet increased for mining by 152 per cent, for banks and finance by 86 per cent. Automotive puts back $31 into the economy for every dollar invested.


“There is not a single mass-produced vehicle on the planet which doesn’t benefit from a fair degree of government support but somehow sections of the Australian public have been conned into believing we should be the unique exception,” Dave Smith said.


At just 5 per cent, the Australia tariff rate is lower than the potential markets of India (100 per cent) Thailand (80 per cent), Malaysia (35 per cent), Indonesia (50 per cent), Mexico (34 per cent), South Korea (8 per cent) and Canada (6 per cent)."

Sourced from a recent report compiled by the AMWU to present to the Govt as per part of the Productivity Commission report submission to try and help save our car industry, union bashing aside I find it important to get all sides of a story instead of relying on the media and govt as the only source of information.
