    Ls1 Fan setup

Anybody running other than factory fan setup just trying to tidy the area up?

I think 2 12" fans or something look a lot cleaner mounted to radiator or even alloy shroud?

check out datport for fans, SPAL best on the market for flow and quality, i run 2 12s and it cools from 95-85degrees in under 30sec

and or look at aussie dessert coolers and get shroud made to suit

I can see those fans have extra blades/move more air. Though in my opinion the shrouds look pretty ordinary!

You'll go a bloody lone way before you find fans that will perform at idle as good as the Holden set up.

The way the fan cowling covers the whole radiator and draws the whole radiator with air,

with a smaller suck area you have to suck and see (ha ha)

    Cheers

    Hey Steve

Yea understand that but if you could match or out do the cfm do you not think it would tidy up front of engine bay up? Also easier to remove?

Surely wouldn't have any issue ....mmm

Easier to remove? I don't think they can get any easier!

Even if they're providing more flow/suction, it's in a smaller area, so would lead to hot/cold spots on the radiator IMO

    Re: Ls1 Fan setup

In all the threads I have seen on this forum in all the years I have been here, every person complaining of overheating issues have been running aftermarket radiators and or fans. I haven't seen/heard of anything outperforming the factory setup, so personally I wouldn't be changing it.
    I'm not a hoon, I'm just competitive

Don't think you can devise a quicker removal setup than OEM! Can do mine in about 90 seconds without rooting anything!

I tried it and it did not work too well. I ran two 12 inch fans without the ducting and found that temps were all over the place. On the street in the silly hot darwin weather I had to turn the AC off after a 20 min drive just to keep it cool. Once the AC was off it was fine and came back to normal really quick even in stop start traffic.

When I spoke to the mechanic about the issue he said their is a nsaty swirling affect that happens when you dont have the ducts and can make the car run hotter.
I put the stock fans and duct back on and all good regardless of AC etc. Worked on the cicruit too. Stupid hot last weekend and after a few laps at full belt stayed pretty good. Last time out with the fan without the ducting it temps came up after a lap and did not go back down. Under high speed the fans do nothing but the duct still does it job.

Photo of the set up I used. I still use the big aftermarket radiator too. Also mastered the bleeding of these big radiators too with some advise from Mr Mainlube. Worked a treat after getting it right.

    Cheers for input guys.

Fan are easy to remove just thought would make like easier if you could just take it all out as one piece kinda thing! Almost disconnect hoses and it's out basically

As the fan only works at slow speed etc just thought if fans sucked enough would be ok but maybe not!

holden has spent a lot of money and time developing a good system so maybe I won't risk it just for a cleaner look

I can see why the above setup is not up to scratch! Been working with fans for thirty years now & to have two fans there like shown will not attract all those fins per inch as there suppose to! You would have been better off with a single & a nice snout instead of two!! Very hard to beat the OEM or pretty them up as they literally spent millions on this!

I prefer them being separate from the radiator, sometimes you just need the extra clearance from pulling the fans out where pulling the whole lot and losing your coolant would be excessive.
You can have them out in about 2 minutes

Thought was I rarely use the car at town driving so more flow the better but I did not count on the ducting having a effect even when fans are not on

    Re: Ls1 Fan setup

While that is true though the real effect of these OEM fans & snouts give power (free) as you move, due to the cut of the fan blade gives cooling without any electrical power applied=less drag on the engine!
