    L98 408 Stroker - Expectations

Gday guys. I have an 09 SSV that has just had a bottom end failure. After looking at prices for L77's and LS3's ive decided to bite the bullet and have active automotive rebuild my L98 as a 408 stroker. The current set up has cam, full system, ls7 lifters, otr and a mafless tune making 440rwhp through a manual box. My question is what can I expect both power and driving wise? Is 500rwhp out of the question? Has many of you gone down this track? Any info would be appreciated. Cheers.

My estimate would be around 340-350rwkw na, depending on heads/porting!

Cam will be the biggest factor. Will probably make over 500 on Active's dyno....

You should be able to crack 500rwhp quite easily. Biggest gain which is more important is torque. A lot of variables but im sure ed will give you the outcome your looking for

A head/cam 6lt did 500rwhp from bye performance in wa from memory so all comes down to top end setup.

Just had another look. L77 with bye cam (236/238?) and hand ported heads 503rwhp at 6500rpm.

Have you taken one for a drive? If not i am sure your builder will be able to arrange a test drive. Once you have driven one you will forget about the peak hp number, torque is where it is at with a stroker as Peter stated above.

I did a set of Mast heads when I had mine built, my builder arranged specs on cam to suit.

The cam in atm is an active 5 and was told i could use this however it wouldnt be ideal. So going in is an active 5, im not sure on the exact specs off the top of my head but have been told its a bit bigger. I havent seen or heard a 408 stroker up close let alone driven one but have been told the torque is where I should see the most gains. Have many of you driven one?

They are amazing to drive. If you have the coin do heads at the same time. If your bores are good i would go first oversize and 402, that way you have got room to move for a freshen up down the track. Going 408 would take the bores to the max if an L98. All depends on condition of block which i am sure your builder can advise on.

    Re: L98 408 Stroker - Expectations

I have an L98 stroker in my VZ and its putting out 340RWK on a consertive tune. I am very happy happy with both the KW figures and the 800 mn of torque with six speed manual its lively. Sonny at Autowerks built my motor and exhaust, clutch to suit. This is what he has done- Balance /blue print Higgins Stage 4 Heads
AW Stage 4 Cam,dual valve springs,ARP head bolts,Arp bottom end
    stud kit,roller rockers,moly push rods,double row timing
    chain,high volume oil pump,steel head gaskets,cam
    sensor,Balancer ROMAC,Stage 1 Clutch Kit
    ARP Flywheel Bolts,di fillipo
    headers,100cell cats,x force dual 3inch system,500hp fuel
& carry out custom tune to suit

I am very happy with the results and its still streetable with manners.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: L98 408 Stroker - Expectations

Sounds good! Also clutch wise what should i be looking at? Lately ive started to notice a little bit of slippage and im not going to leave the stock clutch in to try and deal with the extra power and torque. Is there anything that ppl outright agree on as being a decent clutch. On the flip side what should I be steering away from? I wouldnt mind something fairly close to factory feel, my days of driving around trying to pedal brassbutton clutches are well and truely behind me.
