best heads for vz ss 5.7L

hi all just looking into some more bolt on mods for my ute and heads seem like
a good upgrade as ive done most of the other bolt on mods. just keen to know what
brands people use and recommend and what size? like higgins, dart etc and what type of
gains would you see? some say 20hp some say less.

its a vz ss ute 5.7l manual 6 speed
    current mods.

throttle bodies australia 92mm electronic aftermarket throttlebody
    fast intake manifold 92mm

    conrod bolts
    25% underdrive pulley

I'm more interested in why you did the manifold before the heads?
You may not make a heap more peak power but you will gain more thru the whole rev range.

I am also looking at heads for my Ls & have read a lot of good reports about Ls 3 small bore heads. Means you would have to change intake to suit but could be worth it.

did the manifold to match the throttle body in 1 go seeing as i was going to have to get
an adaptor plate to fit the throttle to the standard intake so thought kill two with 1 stone
n upgrade the manifold because it was going to get done
at 1 stage anyway. wanted to do the simple stuff first.

ahk nah i like my current setup so probly just stick around the ls1/ls6 area
just not sure wether to go to hassle of sending my heads off to be ported or buy
new 1s and bolt em straight on.

Mate if you've got the cash to spend on heads for only a small gain, Id consider a small blower setup if you're really keen on more power. Sell a few parts to recover costs + some cash and you're over 400kw. Heads are gonna set you back somewhere between 1-2k, is it worth it for 20hp? Your 1 7/8s will suit at least!

It all depends what your end goal is for the car. I used to have a vl back in the day and guys used to spend all this money getting power out of N/A motors, at the end of the day if you want power you have to stroke it or blow it.

Re: best heads for vz ss 5.7L

yea heads might set me back 1 to 2k but a blower will set me back
$8000 then ill have to go through hassle of changing/selling pulley and
harmonic balancer, intake manifold, injectors, otr, possibly cam then have to spend at
least another $2000 on getting it up to scratch again. plus i like it being N/A and when
u consider that a brand new 20hp outboard motor costs $4700 then even if i only make
10hp for $2000 with the possibilty of making up to 20hp its not bad price. and its an
easy bolt on mod that cops wont hassle me over.

Pete out at Horsepower Engineering at Capalaba does some really nice heads if your looking to get yours done. I'd maybe try and find some 243s and either way get them decked for some more compression as well.

Re: best heads for vz ss 5.7L

Oh dear.... how did a thread go from buying high quality heads and spending around 2 grand to a 10 grand blow out on boost or worse, porting your own heads?

As said, get exchange from Higgins or Mast, AFR, dart, PRC etc from the states.
