    Window Tint??

    Hi Guys,

Just wanting to get some advice.
The attached image is of my ute and im trying to work out if i can (legally) go darker on the drivers and passengers windows?

Im guessing the fact that it is tinted that it probably is on the limit? that said i see plenty going around with what seems like darker!

I've tried a few local places via phone to see if they could test but none have the instrument(s) needed.

    thanks

Any inspection station should have the instrument to test the tint level. Most places when the tint is done do it to the maximum level of 35%. Yes you may see darker tints but just ask yourself is it worth the hassle if I get pinged for it to have to take it all off and new tint put back on again.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I definitely don't want to get in a situation where im getting defected or failing rego check!!
Happy to leave the windows as is if they are the legal limit.... I guess I just assumed given that there were so many going around darker that mine wasn't at the limit! It was more a question as to whether we think this was the limit!

Would ride height really be an issue? Previous owners had it riding on its belly (coilovers) so believe it or not its a lot higher than it was! Sounds like im keeping everything as is to not get any unwanted attention!

    Re: Window Tint??

Im from Vic so might be slightly different, but ive had a number of cars running 5% for years now without an issue. Been through plenty of booze buses etc and never had an issue.

The thing with tint is its like a lot of mods, if you fail the attitude test or are being stupid then they might get you on it but if your doing the right thing most cops wont look twice.

Hard to tell from the photos but your tint doesn't look very dark. Not sure if ACT has different rules for tint but mine looks a lot darker than your photo and is legal in NSW, mine has been tested as we have to tool at work for testing tint. The tool isn't very expensive so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding somewhere to test it, maybe try some places that do blue slips.

Just went to a window tinting place and turns out that the fronts have no window tint at all!

    Booked in for legal tint.

    thanks

It's pretty much whether you want to run the risk.. In my case, tint darkness is questionable, ride height questionable, exh noise questionable... Been pulled over for breatho's, licence checks and only a few weeks ago, stopped for doing a u turn at a place I shouldn't have done... no dramas yet, just lucky I guess, or maybe it's because I'm a "mature" aged (49) driver!!!

I have the legal 35% on the door glass and 20% at the B Pillar and rear window.

Being a Ute you can go as dark as possible on the rear and you’ll find the heat on the back of your neck will be considerably reduced adding to your driving comfort.

    Re: Window Tint??

I've had 28% on the side windows and 20% on the rear of my ute for over 5 years now. Doesn't look ridiculously dark but certainly a noticeable improvement over "legal". Never had a problem but being in Vic I don't have to do an annual inspection.

From my experience it's got less to do with the tint if people get done for it by the police, and more to do with how much of an idiot they are driving like when the police first spotted them- or they fail the attitude test once they stop...

the police want to see if your wearing a seatbelt, using your phone when you shouldn't. Until they can't see who is in the car is the day you will be defected for tint

Pretty much. Unless driving like a tool, they usually have better things to do with their time than just worry about a few percent less light transmission on the tint.
Tint darkness is like any mod in my opinion though. If you know it's not legal, and you get done for it, you really can't blame anyone but yourself.
"But it looks hot" ain't a legal defence...

    Re: Window Tint??

I have 20% on my clubsport and have been pulled over without any issues.
I also had about 10% on a Skyline a few years ago and would get pulled over ALOT but never once questioned about the tint.
