Next GM Holden Commodore made by Opel in Germany

Joshua has the dirt this time on the replacement Commodore...

    Opel insignia = plausible...
as One forum member on GMinside said - lets get the popcorn ....

The car that will replace the homegrown Holden Commodore in 2018 will come from Germany — not China — with a choice of four-cylinder or V6 power.

It means there will be no V8 in Holden showrooms for the first time since 1968 and no passenger-car-based ute for the first time since 1951. "

I wouldn't believe for a second that there will be "no V8" in 3+ years time. The media is only speculating.
Insignia would be no surprise. Holden are already bringing back the OPC variant (badged with the previously used Vauxhall "VXR" badging) as a low volume performance model, and as I've said on here, HSV are a decent chance of releasing a twin turbo Insignia in the future as their going forwards model.
Add the (still) stubbornly high aussie dollar that makes euro cars more competitive, and the dots are all lining up ready to be joined- starting with a super low volume, high performance "hero" model to get the market interested...

My FIL has an Insignia (wagon) and it's a very, very different car to Commodore.

Personally, I think this is the beginning of the end for Holden.

HSV will go out of business I reckon soon after the demise of the commodore. They've tried non v8 variants before and all have been a failure. Camaro better be on the cards holden.

If they have a good base car to start from there is no reason they cant do well with a hypo 6, the XR6 turbo showed the market will accept one.

At the V8's last weekend and on Monday at Eastern Creek, hanging out with BJR (no big deal) the questions I asked was, what was taking over from the Falcon and Commodore? The answer from several drivers was the Mustang and Camaro ,so if I was a betting man I would say the rear wheel drive V8 is here to stay, after all the Zeta platform is what the Camaro is built on, that tech and parts are already in Aust. I would like to see Dodge enter the V8's then and Bathurst return to the muscle car era.

I would also like to see Dodge in the V8 Supercars running either a 426 or 440 hemi, but that won't happen unless they change the rules about capacity. The other thing that concerns me is if Holden has no intention of importing a V8 powered car that means the only way in the future when I want to buy a V8 is from either Ford or Chrysler.
As for HSV maybe they should import the Vauxhall Insignia VXR and see if there is any interest.

Re: Next GM Holden Commodore made by Opel in Germany

Holden has it much easier than HSV.

HSV’s fan base has always been about V8’s and if they don’t offer one, then those V8 lovers will probably look at other V8’s on the market.
SRT and Mustang come to mind and some may even step up in the price range and go for something like an AMG or similar.
It’s unlikely they will suddenly start converting on mass to Opel V6 turbos and such but who knows.

If HSV does introduce the Insignia it won’t be an easy market to crack given the number of hot hatches and medium sized 4 door German badges that are already available with strong presence and appeal.
HSV not only have to convince old customers to change, they have to convince new customers they have the goods to compete with the existing brands.
They will also have to change the mindset of new customers who associate HSV as the preferred brand for the local hoon and Bogan brigade.

Camaro and Caddy are a good way to go but if that’s not the route for them then introducing a couple of smartly enhanced and well-priced quick SUV’s to compete with the ridiculously priced fast German varieties could open a new market for them. Bogans buy SUV’s.

Smallish front wheel drive cars never used to be the (consistently) top selling two models in Australia in the past either...

Because if they made a V8 they would need to continue the SS badging
