    Modified to Stock

    Hey Guys,
Question, Who has had a modified car making good reliable power i.e. H&C, hi-stall, diff etc.… VX, VY, VZ or even older and sold up to a newer model Commodore? How was the experience and difference?
Miss the power? Miss all the mods?
Reason I ask is I have a VY 2 Calais, runs great has run 11.9 happy days goes well its mint but I no longer drive it every day , barley, don’t even give it a hard time …I drive a 93 Camry everyday now. Contemplating selling both and getting a new VF series 2 of some sort of HSV… I know I will mod it eventually… but the transition… Regrets?
    Mmmm
Thanks for your thoughts in advance

    Re: Modified to Stock

my vehicle stages went as follows. Stock VX Clubsport R8. Quickly modified with cam, stall, built box & diff, twin 3" pipes yada yada....Then back to stock R8. Now stock VF Redline. Do i miss the power? absolutely. Do i miss the car always breaking down and being hugely unreliable as a daily? not a bit. Overall, i can deal with the slower car, the newer/nicer car wins out in my opinion. Unless you want to spend cash on having both and keep the worked car as a weekender. But needing it as a daily was a major pain in the ass to be honest. Wasnt worth the effort.

Ive also learnt that most stock road bikes will destroy even H&C commodores etc all day, and still be reliable and untouched. Food for thought.

    Re: Modified to Stock

Why did the Clubsport keep breaking down? I can't see anything in that mod list that should affect reliability.

I went from a bolt-on, tuned VY Clubby to a VF SS ute. It lasted less than 1,000km before I did bolt-ons and a tune on the ute, in a couple of weeks it gets front and rear Brembo brakes and 20" staggered wheels, and in 12 months or so it's cam and heads time. Will still be a daily.

Once you get the bug it never really goes away.

    Still have our 2001 Monaro.

Original LS1 ran as quick as 11.79.
Current LS3 has run an 11.08.

Don't see any problem daily driving a sensibly modified car!

mine was probably just a lemon. Once i modified it the problems never stopped. blew stock box 2 weeks after cam went in. Blew the built box a few months later. Blew the next built box. Diff started peg legging, got a built trutrac with 3.9's. Trutrac had a whine at 80ks. Mufflers in the twin 3" blew the guts out, became straight through pipe, cops loved me. Popped a radiator. Put it all back to stock and then blew another auto in stock form. Had it towed so many times RACQ almost refused to do call-outs on my ultimate care....

    Re: Modified to Stock

I find myself cotemplating the same thing quite regularly.
I'm thinking of trading the VY GTS for a Gen F GTS. Its not so much the power as the Gen F won't be much slower, perhaps quicker in general duties as it will have more traction and it will be a much more refined product. My dilemma is the rarity of the VY vs a VF in the long term. I'm not interested in keeping it to make a buck, just keeping it to be one of those cars that you never see around in another 10-20 years time. I know if I sell it I'll regret it at some stage but man the Gen F's are nice cars.

At the moment I'm telling myself to hold out for a few years, they'll get down to 50k or so and I can afford both but they're already pretty tempting when you see demos for 80k.

    Re: Modified to Stock

What's the reason for not driving it anymore? Is it a pain in the ass to take anywhere except a highway cruise or a street event? If so you won't regret the change to a vf. Looking back I regret all the money I tipped into my old clubby. For the money spent I could have bought a second hand m5 which would have been just as quick but much nicer to live with.

I still drive it, and it’s very very reliable!!! I built it that way… and it is built not just wack this or that on it…. I guess having it for 9 years I want a change, newer. After a few years daily driving it is a bit annoying at times… I mean yeh it has no traction except @ the track with M&T’s , I like to tinker... no longer have a garage, which sucks and is part of the reason I am considering selling it. If someone could get more driving out of it and more enjoyment in a way it would also make me happy. I use to drive it every day. Only the last year or so have I driven a second car... I don’t go to car events or car cruises, even Calder gives me the sh&%^ now but I have taken it a few times. I guess a newer car, would keep me busy looking at new mods… lol who knows... I always think yeh, sell it... then people want to pay sweet FA for it...but ya get what ya pay for in life...
    Its only a VY 2 Calais, so I wouldn’t say it’s a collectable… its mint but..yeh no GTS collector…
Maybe its time to go test drive some newer cars…. When is the VF2 in showrooms?
Geez what a rambling I wrote lol

    Re: Modified to Stock

The thing with a new car is that you'll enjoy it straight away but in 10 years time, the VF will be in the same position you are now and you'll likely miss the rawness that the VY would have over it.
I see it as having and earlier commodore like a VH, VK etc. To me, they're cooler than a VX, VY, VZ etc but it's just a matter of time before the VY is cool because it's old.

not as much as you'd think. Being a daily driver it was tame most of the time, wasnt lighting up the tyres on the way to work every day or anything. Towards the end i was afraid to break it, so even easier on it! didnt help change anything though.

I think you guys should stick with the vt-vz cars as well :P

I almost got the urge to look at a new vf 2 ss (affordability not an issue)but I think its a bad idea and will definetly keep my vz clubbie over a vf ss/clubbie.

I still would love a VZ GTO but...

    and

If you could, hypothetically I would prefer to order a new GTS with a n/a ls7 over the lsa (but that's just me)...

Why is that? I moved from my VY Clubby to a VF SS and I don't regret it. Some things are a bit lacking over the clubby but easily fixable (mainly brakes which I already have a set of in my garage waiting on tyres), but apart from that my VF is a MUCH nicer drive. I did keep the clubby as well though.

    Re: Modified to Stock

I went from H+C VT2 SS to VE Calais. Calais is far nicer to drive and with a baby cam and shaved heads makes about 9rwkw less than the VT made with big cam. Best thing though, apart from it being stealthy, is that with the VE I can actually use the power without going sideways or nowhere every time I plant my foot.
