Your run of the mill scan tool will only tell you if there are any active or stored codes! So if your engine light isn't on, it won't really tell you anything
if i was to buy a obd2 scanning tool will it give me all the information about my car, my engine light is not on but i have a slight misfire when under a bit of load and idling at lights, can it tell me if its my coils or injectors ect, just changed leads and plugs thinking it was the problem but has failed to resolve the issue

Hey guys instead of starting a new topic, I'll tag into here
I am wondering what scan tool will read every code like the tech 2 in a VE for say the home mechanic. Most scanners I've seen will only read a stored or current generic codes.
I want one that will read the abs codes, etc and things more detailed.
I know of three scanners but they come at a high price, tech 2, launch and snap on.
Are there cheaper alternatives out there that are just as good??
I have HP tuners, but it doesn't seem to read other codes (that I know off anyway).
Try this site :http://www.envyouscustoms.com/products/elm327-cable/
I have the bluetooth version as do many other members.

It is very limited IMHO.![]()
Thanks for the replies, to me they won't fully scan the system, my HP tuners scans engine codes, but I want to do the lot. Abs, drivetrain etc.
I should mention I also have the wifi mx dongle, it picked up the code for a wheel speed sensor fault that I had so not sure what code that is a part of and why it picked it up? The sensor was faulty though it
thanks, yeh i figured that would be the case. i guess the only real scan tool that does everything is worth big dollars then
