Your run of the mill scan tool will only tell you if there are any active or stored codes! So if your engine light isn't on, it won't really tell you anything

    Re: obd2 scanning tool

Hey guys instead of starting a new topic, I'll tag into here

I am wondering what scan tool will read every code like the tech 2 in a VE for say the home mechanic. Most scanners I've seen will only read a stored or current generic codes.
I want one that will read the abs codes, etc and things more detailed.

I know of three scanners but they come at a high price, tech 2, launch and snap on.
Are there cheaper alternatives out there that are just as good??

I have HP tuners, but it doesn't seem to read other codes (that I know off anyway).

Thanks for the replies, to me they won't fully scan the system, my HP tuners scans engine codes, but I want to do the lot. Abs, drivetrain etc.

I should mention I also have the wifi mx dongle, it picked up the code for a wheel speed sensor fault that I had so not sure what code that is a part of and why it picked it up? The sensor was faulty though it

Yeah, I can't even see that ELM tool doing as much as what you already have mate.

    That's my understanding.
There must be a bit more complication in the system to be able to access the ABS/SRS side of things and only the expensive tools seem to be able to manage it
