    Exhaust insurance woes

Need some advice, regarding exhaust systems.

My Car is a Calais 2003 VYII 8cyl with a cat back 2.5" exhaust system from 7-8 years ago.

Shopping around for cheaper insurance and Real Insurance/Woolworths offer competetive rates for my situation however they do not allow any modifications what so ever.

I called both companies and 2 holden service centre joints and neither of them could tell me what a stock exhaust was for a vy2 calais. I rang 3 exhaust places and they seemed quite baffled that I was wanting a stock exhaust and 2 of the 3 places wouldn't give me a price without seeing the car first.

Real Insurance also told me that no matter what exhaust i had installed they will not insure me because technically anything fitted after the car leaves the factory is an "after market mod"...

Woolworths advised that as long as the exhaust I get doesn't increase or decrease performance from factory specifications it should be fine.

What options do I have? Surely a 2.5" cat back is not that big a deal?

Just play dumb, tell them the mufflers rusted out and that was the replacement you got.
I reckon you'd be hard pressed to get knocked back making a claim because you've got an exhaust on there but then you don't want issues with insurance when you need it the most. The couple of bucks you save now may not be worthwhile come claim time.

    This.

Just think if this is how they are just to get insurance how do you think they will be come claim time?

Unless you want the exhaust covered by the policy don't even mention it, just means they won't insure you for anything replacement over factory parts. Cheap insurance = cheap cover

if you go and ask nicely at your local dealer's spares area, they should let you look at the part drawings for the exhaust
they might even give you the part listing from that ... which comes with descriptions

I don't see you ending up with any financial benefit as far as savings in policy changes if you procure a catback (original spec) through holden.

Most people advertise them on gumtree or the like for bugger all. have a look through the local classifieds.

    Re: Exhaust insurance woes

I wouldn't bother with a cheap insurance company that wants to nit pick so much to even give a quote on a premium.

I would be too scared what they might say when they had to handle a claim?

As others have said, go to another insurance company.

Also in the event of a claim, you will most likely get punted to one of their "Preferred Repairers". This means you have little to no choice in who repairs your car, and the winning repairer will be the one who cuts corners to come in cheapest!

Factory exhausts on the series 2's are a twin 2 1/4" stainless system. Most exhaust shops have bulk numbers of them in the bin.

    Re: Exhaust insurance woes

It's a Royal Pain In The Ass, but the only way to compare insurance is to compare the "PDS" of quote A to quote B, once you have narrowed down some prices.

The cheapest price it's the whole picture... whats included and excluded is...

You can download the PDS from all insurance web sites.

I wouldn't bother with this mob, PITA from the getgo, super cheap because nothing is covered and everything is excluded, who really has a 100% stock car in the real world...

Make sure you remove your "Aftermarket" Ryco oil filter, otherwise Null and Void.......... What a joke...

Look elsewhere and don't look back...

    Re: Exhaust insurance woes

If you have a bad insurance history, your better finding another company & paying a little extra.
Reckon they would be hard pressed to renege on a claim based on a cat back alone, would all depend on the nature of the damage/claim.
