Cool 2009 VE Commodore UTE MY10 Issues

I am looking at buying a 2009 ute MY10 omega. I will have to admit, I am not generally a Holden person since owning a VT Commodore many years ago. I have to say I am more familiar with Ford/Toyota/Subaru issues than Holden these days.

It is a recoverable repair and supposedly passed Qld Transport Inspection (Yet to see the paperwork from the dealer). It looks pretty tidy from what I could crawl over and under yesterday. Done about 76,000kms. Ex police vehicle. Still in negotiations.

I have read about the timing chains stretching. From what I can find out, seemed to be a worse issue for earlier models. Also thermostat sensor. Anything else I need to be aware of for this model?

Also, what is the fuel economy like - Realistically! I live mountain, so will be some climbing up and down a mountain, 500m above sea level. Some highway and some suburbian. I am coming out of a Subaru Forester 2.5L Turbo.... which I can average between 10.3 and 10.9 for my driving.

I have heard from friends who have an omega wagon who do not get good fuel economy.

    Hi

I am under the impression that when the VE introduced the "SIDI" version of the V6 engine they drastically reduced the timing chain issues but I am sure some others will chime in with further input.

I believe in a mountain type area your fuel consumption will be just over the 12 litres per 100km range. I currently use a VF SV6 ute for daily duties and it averages 11.3 litres per 100km in the city area.

    Regards,

This one is still the 3.6L V6, not the newer SIDI 3.0L

I will stand corrected on the SIDI. I have had a look at the photos again and am thinking the panel shop did not put the SIDI badges back onto the side panels

With that history it would want to be cheap.....very cheap (regardless of the low mileage)
I'm wondering if the 2 x engine block cracked issues are in fact engine sump cracked - which I'd expect in a police vehicle doing some curb jumping etc.
Also re timing chain stretch. This usually became obvious my around the 100k mark (check engine light/malfunction message etc). The dealer should be able to access service history records (assuming it was factory serviced) & confirm if timing chain has been replaced.
Check for coolant leaks around the front timing case cover (waterpump leak/ top coolant pipe leak) & heater hose connections (just above exhaust manifold on drivers side).

It looks like it may be the one history. Car originally from NT, bought most likely from Gov Auction and shipped to Brisbane, so would need to be reassessed/reinspected by QLD TMR.

It has supposedly been reinsoected and passed by DMR. Dealer from what I could understand does tend to buy a few repairable write offs and repairs and flogs them off and does tend to have a decent reputation.

When I did see the car, they were upfront to say it was a repairable write off. However the cracked engine block is of concern. Maybe not so bad if it was a broken assessory lug that has been repaired. Or if they put in a recon motor to pass DMR. I am having my mechanic look at it next week.

But it is making me cautious. Resale will be harder I imagine and I think this is the reason why it hasn't moved quickly now.

Aside from this vehicle, I am looking at VE. Budget depending, a VEII. What is generally better? The 3.6L motor or the newer 3L motor? I am looking at nothing before 2008.

Sorry, I don't get you at all buddy.

If I was looking at a car & worked out it's a rebuilt wreck I would just walk away straight away, END OF STORY!

I can't understand for one second why you would even be asking questions about the particular model faults or even considering buying a rebuild.

There are plenty of vehicles for sale every day of the week,
once a vehicle is flagged as a repairable writeoff that stays on it's status
every time forever anyone does any check on it's history.

Re: 2009 VE Commodore UTE MY10 Issues

If a dealer or anyone for that matter is purchasing repairable write-offs for the sole purpose to repair and resell them, I would imagine they are doing the cheapest repairs possible to maximise their profit.

I couldn’t run away fast enough from that scenario.
