Yeah that's looking pretty average to say the least....
Do you know the service history on it or have you recently purchased it?
Hate to say it seen a few of these looks like that has been run on Mineral oil for a long time, I won't use that crap on any ally motor! Some swear by it but I don't!!
Young fella picked it a month ago....it ran sweet no ticking nothing....has service history last one done by holden......
We run full synthetic in the other cars..
just going to clean up loose bits and in a couple of days change the oil pump drop the sump clean pick up etc....should keep him going for awhile and save for a new donk....
Yes give it a long soak to clean out that crap, then once put back into commission a few successive oil/filter drops is recommended.
This is what happens when you don't change oil often enough! Nasty
Ouch, thats pretty bloody bad.
Having been down a similar path before... It seems once you start pulling one of these motors down for a rebuild it gets pretty bloody expensive pretty quickly. What vehicle is it out of?
Chances are if there is wearing on any of the bearings you'll need to replace the lot. Which usually involves machine work and prices really ad up...
It may be worth trying some flushing agent and several oil changes to see how much comes out. (EG, put in some flushing agent and new oil and drive 20km, drop the oil and repeat 2 or 3 times). Then run a thick oil (10w60) and see how it goes.
But yeah, i probably wouldn't bother trying to pull down and clean up a LS1, just too expensive for what it is. Almost easier to buy a donor 6 ltr or crate motor.
By the time they get that bad it's kinda a dammed if you do, dammed if you don't type thing. The problem with flushing is you risk dislodging all the gunk and having it jam up other areas. It will come out eventually. But what's the risk of damage in doing so. Tough call
Yeah, my fear with that much gunk is under higher RPM the pump is sucking the pan dry as the oil cant drain back quickly enough...
Maybe physically clean up the rockers as best as possible, fill the sump via the dipstick with diesel and let sit over night then drain the sump. That should get rid of a lot of the build up without actually having to run special oil and risk dislodging gunk from other areas (typically rear main seal etc, which then develop leaks)...
Modern spec mineral oils have detergents in them as well Mick, the main advantage with true synthetic bases is very low temp flow, high temp stability and longevity, not necessarily cleaning.
That engine very definitely hasn't had regular oil changes, hopefully you can clean everything up enough with the sump off to do some good to keep it running but you're up against it. A mate of mine spent a fair bit of time trying to clean up an alloytech V6 that looked like that with flushes, multiple oil changes etc and it still ended up having to be pulled down and rebuilt.

Yeah, that stuff is really going to be moved easily. Best you could do is short interval regular oil changes and that will at least stop it getting worse and have it pulled down at some stage.
Took 215 K to get it like that, it aint going to clean over night.
Wouldn't worry about a Synthetic just yet ($$$) from here on do 5000 Klm oil changes and flush every change.
First up needs an extreme flush (2 hours) with a good cleaner, next 5 or 6 flushes should be extreme flushes.
We have a member on here who's motor was 10 times worse than that, many extreme flushes later,
coupla years later, engines still going strong and getting cleaner. (PM me if you want to know more) or I'll get my hand smacked!
Big thing is, Don't panic (form a circle)
Cheers
Steve
